What does each type of cremation jewelry cost?

These are listed prices from named retailers, crematories, studios and labs, checked in 2026. They're a guide, not a quote: metal prices move, and custom work depends on the design. Where a figure comes from one seller, we say so.

For a middle figure, the typical sterling silver pendant across three sellers is ~$190[12] by our estimate. Our metals and styles comparison explains what you get as you move up the table.

Why do prices jump so much between metals?

The ash itself costs nothing to add; you're paying for metal and labor. Silver is a precious metal, gold much more so, and hand finishing adds hours. By our calculations, entry-level sterling silver costs ~4.4×[13] entry-level steel at the same retailer, and entry-level solid gold ~15×[14] entry-level silver.

Diamonds are another scale entirely. By our estimate, the entry-level stone at one well-known lab costs ~27×[15] a typical silver pendant, and even the cheapest advertised diamond costs ~8×[16] that pendant's price. Our memorial diamond guide explains where that money goes.

Glass and resin sit in the middle for a different reason: you're paying mostly for an artist's time rather than precious metal. Someone has to fuse, shape and slowly cool each glass bead by hand, or pour and cure resin layer by layer. That's also why prices vary so much from one studio to the next.

What extras raise the total?

The listed price is rarely the full bill. Check each of these before you pay:

  • Chain or cord. Some pendants come bare. A sturdy silver chain adds noticeably.
  • Engraving. For comparison, name-only engraving on a pet urn typically adds $15–$25[17] (per one large retailer).
  • Custom print artwork. One crematory's custom sterling print charms cost $290 to $420[5].
  • Filling and sealing by the maker, if you don't do it yourself.
  • Shipping both ways, including Priority Mail Express if ashes are posted in the US.
  • A spare keepsake urn for leftover ash, typically $15–$60[18] (per one large retailer).

How does jewelry fit into the whole farewell budget?

Jewelry is usually one line among several. Private dog cremation averages about $260[19] in the US, before an urn, paw print or pickup. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority's cremation pricing analysis found communal cremation 2x to 5x cheaper[20] than individual for the same weight, but communal means no ashes come back for jewelry. A steel or silver pendant adds a modest amount on top; a gold piece or diamond can cost more than everything else combined.

The memorial budget planner puts cremation, urn, jewelry and keepsakes in one total, so you can see where to spend and where to save. If several people want pieces, the ashes sharing planner shows how many one pet can fill. For a sense check, the live reader votes show which materials people are drawn to before price enters the picture.

How can you spend less without settling?

  • Start with steel. It's tough and cheap, and you can upgrade later with the ash you've kept. Surgical steel holds a little nickel, a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, so very sensitive skin may need titanium instead.
  • Fill it yourself. Self-fill kits avoid posting ash and paying for filling.
  • Buy sets. Matching pieces for a family are often cheaper as a set.
  • Check your pet insurance. One insurer's wellness add-on has reimbursed up to $650[21] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes, and one end-of-life add-on up to $500 including commemorative items[22].
  • Skip the rush. Fast-track fees for custom pieces add up; order early for anniversaries.

What does cremation jewelry cost outside the US?

Handmade pieces from UK studios give a sense of pricing there: one maker sells pet-ash pendants at £180–£299[23] and rings from £165 to £300, with glass beads from £95[10]. A Bath glass studio charges £170[24] for a glass ash pendant. Mass-produced steel and silver pendants cost roughly the same in pounds or dollars online.

Local makers can also save on shipping and let you hand over ash in person. Our local pages cover how prices and options vary by area, and our services page explains each type. Or tell us your budget and we'll email options that fit it.

Decide the number first, then fall in love with a piece. It's much harder the other way round.

Questions people ask

What is the cheapest cremation jewelry?

Stainless steel self-fill pendants are the cheapest, starting around $20 at a large US retailer with most under $30. They include a small funnel kit so you can fill them at home. Simple urn pendants from crematories start around $60.

How much does a sterling silver cremation necklace cost?

At one large US retailer, sterling silver pet-ash necklaces cost about $88 to $298. Another urn retailer's sterling pieces ranged from $109 to $529, with a middle price near $129. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pendant costs around $190 across three sellers.

Is gold cremation jewelry worth the price?

It can be if you'll wear it daily for decades or plan to pass it on, because solid gold doesn't tarnish and repairs well. Solid 14k gold pet-ash pendants start near $1,300 at one retailer. Gold-plated pieces look similar for much less but the plating wears over time.

How much does it cost to put ashes in glass jewelry?

One US crematory network sells glass ash beads at $245. In the UK, glass ash pendants cost about £170 at one studio, and glass beads start from £95 at another. Glass needs only a small amount of ash and usually ships within two to eight weeks.

Does pet insurance pay for cremation jewelry?

Standard policies usually don't, but some US add-ons have. Embrace's Wellness Rewards could reimburse up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes, and Lemonade's end-of-life add-on up to $500 including commemorative items. Check your own policy wording before you buy.

Why is some cremation jewelry so expensive?

Precious metals, handwork and custom artwork drive the price, not the ash. Solid gold, hand engraving, custom print casting and grown diamonds involve costly materials and many hours. A mass-produced steel pendant and a handmade gold ring can hold the same pinch of ash.

How much should I spend on cremation jewelry?

Whatever feels comfortable once the cremation itself is paid for. Many people spend less than the cremation on a first piece, often a steel or silver pendant, and add something finer later using ash they've kept aside. There's no amount that makes a memorial more meaningful.
