Small calculators for the practical side of memorial jewelry

How much ash is there? How many pieces will it fill? Who gets what? Cremation returns about 3-5% of body weight[1], and these tools turn that into answers for your pet.

  • Instant results, nothing to sign up for
  • Every assumption shown on screen

Small calculators for the practical side of memorial jewelry

Before you order

Why a few quick numbers save a lot of worry

Most questions about memorial jewelry come down to amounts. People worry there won't be enough ash for everyone, or that filling a pendant will somehow use up the urn. In reality the amounts are tiny, but seeing your own pet's figures on screen is far more reassuring than being told so.

Each tool below works in your browser and shows its assumptions. None of them needs your email. When you're ready for real prices from makers, the form at the top of the page is there, or you can go straight to our contact page.

Step one

How much ash did your pet leave? The ashes weight estimator

Enter your pet's species and body weight and see a range for the ashes returned, with an everyday comparison. It's useful before cremation, when you're deciding whether to set a portion aside, and afterwards, if the container feels surprisingly light. By our estimate, a 12 lb cat returns about 6.7 oz[2], a share of body weight in line with what a study of 100 cremations found for people.

Step two

How many pieces will it fill? The jewelry ash capacity guide

Choose pendants, rings or glass beads and see how much each typically holds and how many one pet could fill. The answer is almost always "far more than you need", even for a rabbit or a budgie. The full capacity guide page explains the chamber sizes behind it.

Step three

Who gets what? The ashes sharing planner

When several people loved the same pet, the sharing planner lays out a fair split: a pendant for each, a keepsake urn for a parent, a tube for scattering, and what remains for the main urn. Seeing it written down helps families agree before anyone opens the container. Read more on the sharing planner page.

Which print method suits your pet? The paw print keepsake chooser

A clear print can later be engraved onto a pendant or ring.

Engraved paw and nose prints start with a good impression. This tool matches a method (ink, clay, plaster or a 3D cast) to your pet's size and fur, and tells you which gives the crispest image for jewelry. Prints must be taken before cremation, so it's one to use early. The print chooser page has step-by-step tips.

Putting the tools together

A worked example: one cat, four pendants and an urn

Say your cat weighed 11 lb and three adult children each want a pendant, plus one for you. The weight estimator puts the ashes at roughly five to nine ounces. The capacity guide shows a typical pendant holds about a twentieth of a cubic inch, so four pendants use well under a teaspoon between them.

The sharing planner then confirms what that means in practice: after four pendants, virtually all of the ashes remain for the main urn or a scattering. If one of the children would prefer a glass bead, that uses a little more but still leaves the urn almost untouched.

Finally, the budget planner adds it up. Four stainless steel pendants might total about $80 to $120 at one large retailer's prices[3], while four sterling silver ones could run $352 to $1,192[4], on top of the cremation. Seeing both totals side by side often settles the choice of metal quickly.

Putting it together

What will it all cost? The memorial budget planner

Jewelry is rarely the only cost. The budget planner lists cremation, any home visit, the urn, jewelry, prints and a farewell, with editable low and high amounts. Cost is a real concern for many: 61%[5] of US owners in a survey of 2,043 pet owners said aftercare costs worried them, and a written total is the easiest cure for surprises.

Add up cremation, urn, keepsakes and a farewell so the total holds no surprises.

For context, private cremation of a dog averages about $260[6] in the US, before any keepsakes. The budget planner page explains the default figures, and our range of jewelry options gives typical prices for each kind of piece. For the reasoning behind the numbers, our articles on how much ash a pendant holds and filling cremation jewelry go further, our local pages cover area differences, and the poll results show what other readers plan.

Questions people ask

Are these tools accurate for my specific pendant?

They use typical figures, so treat them as a close guide rather than a measurement. Chamber sizes vary between makers, and ash density varies a little between pets. For an exact figure, ask the maker how much their piece holds, in teaspoons or milliliters, and compare it with the tool's estimate.

Do the tools store what I type?

No. The calculators run in your browser and don't ask for your name or email. Nothing you enter is sent to us unless you choose to fill in the request form separately, which is entirely optional.

Which tool should I use first?

Start with the ashes weight estimator if you don't know how much ash there is, then the capacity guide to see how many pieces it fills. If several people want a share, finish with the sharing planner. The paw print chooser is only useful before cremation, so use it first if your pet is still with you.

Can these tools tell me which piece to buy?

They can tell you what's physically possible and what it might cost, but not which piece will feel right. That depends on how you'll wear it, your skin and your budget. Our services page compares each type, and we're happy to suggest options if you send us a request.

Why are jewelry prices shown as ranges rather than exact figures?

Because prices vary widely between makers, metals and designs, and they move with metal prices. A range based on typical listings is more honest than a single number that might be wrong for your area or the piece you want. For exact prices, send us a request and we'll email options.

Can I use the tools for a pet that hasn't died yet?

Yes, and many people do. Planning ahead is often gentler than deciding everything in the days after a loss. The print chooser is especially useful early, because paw and nose prints can only be taken while your pet is still with you. The other tools work the same whether you're planning or already have ashes at home.
