Plan the whole memorial budget, jewelry included
Jewelry is usually one line in a longer bill. Private dog cremation alone averages about $260[1] in the US, so seeing every item together helps you choose what matters most.

Why add it up
Why a written budget makes decisions easier
Money is an uncomfortable thing to think about while grieving, but it's a very common worry. In a US survey of 2,043 pet owners, 61%[2] of pet owners rated the cost of aftercare as a concern. Seeing the full picture early means you can decide where to spend and where to save, rather than finding out item by item.
It also helps you give jewelry its proper place. If the cremation and urn are already settled, you may find there's room for a sterling silver pendant rather than steel, or for matching pieces for two people. If money is tight, a simple self-fill pendant can still be deeply meaningful.
Using the planner
How to use the memorial budget planner
- Choose your currency. US, UK, Canadian or Australian. The starting amounts stay US figures and aren't converted, so replace them with local quotes.
- Tick what you're planning. Cremation, euthanasia at the clinic or at home, pickup, urn, cremation jewelry, a memorial stone, a paw print, a farewell and a memorial tree are all listed, with private cremation and an urn ticked to start. You can't add or rename lines.
- Edit the amounts. Each item has a low and high figure you can change once you have real quotes.
- Read the total. The planner adds up the low and high ends, and you can copy the summary to share.
The jewelry line starts with a broad placeholder range of $50 to $300 that isn't drawn from a published source. For comparison, one large US retailer sells stainless steel ash necklaces from $19.95[3] and sterling silver ones for $88–$298[4], so most steel and silver pendants fall inside it. If you're considering gold, resin or glass, raise the high figure; for a memorial diamond, raise both ends considerably. Our cremation jewelry price guide lists typical prices for each type.
Where the defaults come from
How the starting figures are chosen
Where a published figure exists, the planner uses it. Private cremation defaults to the range around the US average of $260[1], clinic euthanasia to the range around $139[5], and home euthanasia to the range around $410[6]. For cats, the averages are a little lower.
Items with no published national figure, such as jewelry, urns and paw prints, use typical price ranges and are labeled that way in the tool. They're sensible starting points, not quotes. Replace them with real prices as soon as you have them.
| If you're choosing | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel self-fill pendant | $19.95[3] | $30 (most pieces) |
| Sterling silver pendant | $88[4] | $298 |
| Glass bead or pendant with ash | $245 per bead[7] | Ask the studio |
| Resin ring with fur or ash | Ask the maker | Ask the maker |
| Solid gold pendant or ring | $1,298[8] | $4,750 |
A worked example
Worked example: a cat's memorial with two pendants
Imagine a family planning for their cat. They keep private cremation and the urn ticked, tick cremation jewelry and the paw print keepsake, and want two sterling silver pendants, one for each partner. The planner has one jewelry line, so both pendants go on it together.
- Private cremation: this line starts at the US dog range, but cat cremation averages about $180[9], so they enter $150 to $250
- Simple wooden urn: $30–$150[10] (per one large retailer)
- Two silver pendants: $176 to $596, at $88 to $298 each[4]
- Paw print taken before cremation: $10 to $76[11]
- Total: about $366 to $1,072
Seeing that range, they might choose one silver pendant and one steel, or skip the decorative urn and keep the ashes in the provider's container inside a keepsake box. The planner makes those trade-offs visible without anyone having to say "we can't afford that" out loud.
Notice the paw print line. By our estimate the median crematory paw-print add-on is ~$32[11], so it's cheap, but it has to happen before cremation, so it's worth deciding on early even if the jewelry comes later. The paw print keepsake chooser helps you pick a method that will engrave cleanly onto a pendant, should you want one down the line.

Stretching the budget
Ways to keep jewelry costs down without losing meaning
- Fill it yourself. Self-fill pendants skip the cost and wait of professional filling.
- Choose metal carefully. Titanium and steel are affordable and suit most skin; silver costs more and tarnishes.
- Check your insurance. One insurer's wellness add-on has reimbursed up to $650[12] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes.
- Buy one now, more later. Keep a small reserve of ash so pieces for others can come when the budget allows.
Standard pet insurance generally doesn't cover cremation, so check the policy wording rather than assuming. For help comparing what each type of piece really costs, see our full jewelry options page, and for a clearer sense of what you're paying for, our memorial jewelry guide explains closures and fill so you can compare like with like.

Limits and next steps
What the budget planner can't tell you
It can't give you local prices, which vary by city and provider (in the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority found communal cremation 2x to 5x cheaper[13] than individual for the same pet weight, which shows how far one choice moves a total), and it can't know about extras like engraving, rush fees, return postage or a chain sold separately. Ask every maker for a written total. Our jewelry order checklist lists what to confirm.
Before you budget for a set of pieces, check how many the ashes can fill with the jewelry ash capacity guide. When you're ready, share your budget with us and we'll email options that fit. Prices vary by area, so our local pages are worth a look, and the live reader votes show which materials other people lean toward.

Questions people ask
How much should I budget for cremation jewelry?
At one large US retailer, stainless steel ash pendants start at $19.95[3] and sterling silver ones cost $88–$298[4], while solid 14k gold runs $1,298–$4,750[8]. A glass ash bead costs about $245 at one US seller[7], resin varies by maker, and memorial diamonds start around $750 to $995 at budget labs[14]. Add engraving, filling and postage if the maker charges separately.
Does pet insurance pay for memorial jewelry?
Standard policies usually don't cover cremation or keepsakes. Some wellness or end-of-life add-ons have, with limits; one US add-on reimbursed up to $650[12] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Check your policy wording and keep receipts in case you can claim.
What's the cheapest way to have jewelry with my pet's ashes?
A self-fill stainless steel or titanium pendant, filled at home. It avoids postage, professional filling fees and long waits. If money is tight now, keep a small portion of ash aside so you can have a more elaborate piece made later if you want one.
Can I print or save the budget summary?
Yes. The planner lets you copy a plain-text summary of the items and totals, which you can paste into an email or note to share with family. Nothing is stored on our side, so copy it before closing the page if you want to keep it.
