How long does cremation jewelry take to make?
A self-fill pendant can be worn the day your pet's ashes come home, which is often within 5-10 days[1] of a private cremation (per one urn retailer's guide). Custom engraved pieces take about two weeks, ashes-in-glass studios typically ship 2–8 weeks[2] after receiving ash, and memorial diamonds take many months: about 8.5 on average[3] across three labs.

How long does each type of piece take?
The clock starts when you have ashes to work with, not when you order. For a private cremation, ashes often come back within one to two weeks, and some are quicker: one London council crematorium lets owners collect ashes three days after the service. By our estimate, across the markets we've reviewed, a typical window is about 3 to 14 days[4]. Then the jewelry itself takes anything from an evening to a year.
| Piece | Typical time | What takes the time |
|---|---|---|
| Self-fill pendant | Same day, plus delivery of the pendant | Filling and an overnight cure |
| Maker-filled pendant | Varies by maker; ask for a date | Posting ash both ways; queue |
| Custom print charm | About two weeks to make[5] | Preparing artwork; proof approval |
| Ashes in glass | 2–8 weeks[2] after ash arrives | Studio queue; slow kiln cooling |
| Resin with ash or fur | Often several weeks | Each layer must cure |
| Memorial diamond | 4 to 12 months[3] | Carbon extraction and growth |
What's the quickest way to wear something?
Order a self-fill pendant while you wait for the ashes. Steel pendants start from $19.95[6] at one large retailer and ship with a funnel kit, so the piece is ready the moment the ashes are home. Filling takes about fifteen minutes; the sealant needs a night to cure.
If you need the ashes back quickly, for a funeral or a trip, many crematories offer a rush service. Rush 24-hour pet cremation typically adds +$50–$150[7] in the US (per one large retailer). Our step-by-step filling guide will get you from box to wearing in one evening.

Why do glass and resin take weeks?
Most glass and resin artists are small studios working through a queue. Once your ash arrives it's logged, then made into a piece when your slot comes up. Glass must cool slowly overnight in a kiln to avoid cracking, and resin must cure layer by layer, sometimes for days each.
Add postage time in both directions. In the US, ashes must travel by Priority Mail Express, which is fast, but the return of a finished piece may be standard shipping. Ask for a date that includes both. Our comparison of ashes in glass and resin covers which suits you.

Why do memorial diamonds take so many months?
Carbon has to be extracted from the ash or fur and purified before a diamond can even start growing, and growth itself takes weeks. Then cutting, grading and setting follow. Because the stone is grown rather than mined, the FTC's revised Jewelry Guides cover how lab-created diamonds should be described, so expect a lab to say so plainly. One US grower quotes 7–10 months[8], a Swiss lab about a year[9], and another US lab four to six months[10].
If a diamond is your plan, many families wear a simple pendant or glass bead in the meantime. Our memorial diamond guide covers costs and what to ask a lab before sending anything.
What usually slows an order down?
Most delays aren't in the making. They happen before and after it, and a few of them are easy to avoid.
- Proof approval. A proof sits unanswered in an inbox for a week. Reply the same day if you can.
- Too little ash or fur. The maker has to ask for more, which means another round of postage.
- Missing details. Ring size, chain length, spelling of a name or a date format left unconfirmed.
- Busy seasons. The weeks before the winter holidays and Mother's Day are the most crowded.
- Postage. Weekends and public holidays add days both ways.
Sending everything the maker needs in one go, with a short note listing your choices, avoids most of these. Our engraving guide explains how to check a proof quickly and properly.
How do you have a piece ready for a special date?
Work backwards. First anniversaries, birthdays and the holidays are when most people want something ready, and they're also when studios are busiest. Late in the year is especially crowded for custom jewelry.
- Pick the date and count back the maker's quoted time.
- Add a week for proof approval if there's engraving.
- Add postage both ways, plus a few days' margin.
- Ask the maker to confirm in writing that they can meet it.
- Order a simple self-fill pendant as a backup if the date is close.
Our order checklist lists what to get in writing, including the date.
Can you plan cremation jewelry before your pet dies?
Yes, and some families find it a gentle way to prepare. You can choose a design, take a paw or nose print while your pet is comfortable, and save a tuft of fur, all without deciding anything final. The paw print kit chooser helps with the print, and the memorial budget planner shows the whole cost ahead of time.

Questions people ask
How long does it take to get cremation jewelry after cremation?
It depends on the piece. Ashes usually come back within one to two weeks of a private cremation. A self-fill pendant can be filled that same day, an engraved custom charm takes about two weeks, glass studios typically ship two to eight weeks after receiving ash, and diamonds take months.
Can cremation jewelry be made in a rush?
Self-fill pendants are effectively instant once you have them. Some makers offer paid rush service for engraved or glass pieces, depending on their queue. Memorial diamonds can't be rushed meaningfully because growth takes time. Ask about rush options before posting ash.
Why is my custom cremation jewelry taking longer than quoted?
Common causes are a delayed proof approval, a busy season, postal delays or a problem with the ash, such as too little for the design. Contact the maker, ask where your order is in the process and request a new date in writing.
Can the crematory set ashes aside for jewelry to save time?
Often, yes. Some providers will put a small portion into a separate container, or fill a pendant they sell, when they return the ashes. Ask when you book the cremation. It saves opening the urn later and can speed up a maker's order.
How long do memorial diamonds take compared with other jewelry?
Much longer. Across three labs' stated timelines, memorial diamonds take about 8.5 months on average, from 4 to 12 months. That compares with a few weeks for glass or resin and about two weeks for an engraved metal piece.
When should I order cremation jewelry for the first anniversary?
Count back from the date. For a self-fill or ready-made piece, a few weeks is plenty. For glass or resin, allow two to three months to cover the studio queue and postage. For a memorial diamond, order close to a year ahead, since some labs quote around twelve months.
