In Cairns, a memorial has to cope with the climate. Heavy rain, constant humidity and strong sun are tough on outdoor pieces, so choose stone, sealed ceramic or metal made for the outdoors if it will sit in the garden. Wood and fabric keepsakes last better inside, away from damp. Paw print impressions, small urns and cremation jewellery all suit a Queenslander home or unit where outdoor space is limited or you may move.
Many Cairns residents have family spread across Australia and overseas, and that often shapes memorial choices. Some families divide ashes between a main urn at home and small keepsake urns or pieces of jewellery for relatives down south. There's no need to decide everything at once: ashes can stay in the container they come home in until you've had time to think about what you really want.
Many Cairns owners start with the crematory that handled their pet. Some sell pendants and charms at the counter, and most will portion out a small amount of ashes for jewelry when asked, which saves you opening the main container later. If the range is small, you can still buy elsewhere and bring the portion to a local jeweler to fill.
With roughly 153,000 residents, Cairns is the 5th-largest of the 8 Queensland communities we cover.
Our estimate
51,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Cairns has (estimate)
How we calculated this
153,000 ÷ 2.5 = 61,200 households; × 49% (dog) + 34% (cat) = 51,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
4,200
Cairns families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
51,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
49%[1]
49% of Australian households have at least one dog, up from 40% in 2019.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
34%[3]
34% of Australian households have at least one cat, up from 27% in 2019.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
The published sources behind those figures are Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and Animal Medicines Australia, Pets in Australia 2025 (media release).

Cremation in Australia and wearing a little of your pet
Cremation covers about 71%[5] of human deaths in Australia, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[6] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.
That Australia rate is a human one, published by FuneralSmart (2023). We quote it for Cairns only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Cairns
Whatever Cairns's weather, the biggest risks to a memorial piece are everyday ones: a chain caught on a sweater, sweat in a thread, a glass bead dropped on tile. Choose a sturdy bail and clasp, seal the screw and keep a small pouch handy for when you take it off.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
Pet crematories in Australia and New Zealand often sell a few keepsake pendants alongside urns, though prices are rarely published. For comparison, handmade silver pet-ash pendants from a UK maker cost £180–£299[7], and a US lab charges $3,499[8] for a quarter-carat memorial diamond. Use the table as a guide rather than a Cairns quote.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Queensland
Before you split the ashes, it helps to know what you'll do with the part that won't go into jewelry, because that's where Queensland's rules come in. Scattering on land you don't own, burying in a shared garden and releasing ashes into water can each carry conditions. The piece you wear carries none.
In Australia, pet crematories in the capitals often stock a few keepsake pendants and can pack a small portion of ashes separately. Much custom work is ordered from overseas, which adds shipping time and cost. Summer heat is hard on resin pieces left in cars, and beach and pool days are a good reason to choose glass or take a pendant off before swimming.
For Queensland's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Queensland guide. Local rules in Cairns can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Call the crematory or your vet to find out if they stock jewelry, will set a portion of ashes aside for it, or can point you to a nearby jeweler who does fills.
- Compare two or three options around Cairns: a local jeweler, the crematory counter and a specialist maker online.
- Check allergies and sizing for everyone getting a piece.
- Decide on engraving. The name, the dates, a paw print, or plain metal; either way, sign off the text and proof by email or on paper.
- Arrange the ashes. Hand them over in person, fill them yourself or send them by a tracked, signed service the maker approves.
- Wear it and check it. Look at the seal and clasp every few weeks, and take it off to swim or garden.
- Store it safely at night in a soft pouch, away from perfume, heat and hard surfaces.
Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
The reef, the rainforest and the ranges draw many Cairns families towards nature-based memorials. A tree or native shrub planted with a biodegradable urn can grow quickly in the tropical warmth, and a tropical flowering tree in the backyard becomes a living reminder. If you'd like to scatter ashes at a beach, a river or in a national park, check the rules for that place first, and choose a calm day with the wind behind you.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Cairns each year?
Our estimate is around 4,200. It comes from Cairns's population (about 153,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 51,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do Australia attitudes to cremation compare?
FuneralSmart (2023) puts the Australia human cremation rate at about 71%[5]. We show it on the Cairns page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How much does pet cremation jewelry cost in Cairns?
We haven't found reliable published prices from local makers, so we use the clearest overseas ones as a guide: US steel pendants start from $19.95[10], a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[11], and a Swiss lab lists memorial diamonds at $1,400–$40,500[12]. Local jewelers and crematories in Cairns will price in their own currency, so ask for a written total including shipping.
Can one pendant hold ashes from two pets?
Yes. Many chambers take a pinch from each, and some makers offer double-chambered pieces or two glass beads on one chain. Only mix the portions if you're sure, because once sealed they can't be separated. The capacity guide helps you check a chamber is big enough for both, and keeping a little of each pet apart in the urn leaves options open.
How do I get a small portion out of a sealed urn in Cairns?
Many urns open from the base, with screws or a sliding panel under a felt pad. Inside there's usually a plastic bag with a twist tie. Open it over a tray, lift out a spoonful with a dry teaspoon, then retie the bag and close the urn. If the urn is glued, or you'd rather not do it, the crematory that returned the ashes or a Cairns jeweler can usually help.
Do I need the cremation certificate to order ash jewelry?
Usually not for a pendant you fill yourself or have filled locally. Some mail-in makers and most memorial-diamond labs ask for it, or for a signed form, to confirm what they're receiving and whose ashes they are. Keep it with the urn; it's also useful if you ever carry ashes on a flight or across a border.
