Pet cremation jewelry in Ghent
Most pet ash jewelry uses less than a teaspoon of ashes, so the rest can stay in the urn. Here's how Ghent owners choose a material, a maker and a fit that lasts years of daily wear.

How Ghent owners get a memorial piece made
The Ghent area is famous for growing begonias and azaleas, and a flowering plant is a natural memorial here, whether a pot on the windowsill or a shrub in the garden with ashes worked into the soil. Handmade urns, engraved stones and glass pieces also suit this creative university city. Remember that paw prints and fur clippings have to be requested before the cremation takes place.
Ghent's old town has little garden space, and many families choose a memorial that sits indoors: a compact urn on a bookshelf, a framed paw print by the window, or jewelry holding a pinch of ashes. Families in suburbs such as Sint-Martens-Latem or Merelbeke with more garden room sometimes add a stone or plant a tree. Decide where the memorial will live before choosing its size and material.
Glass memorial pieces are harder to find locally in a city like Ghent, because they need a studio with a kiln and someone who works in fused or lampworked glass. It's worth checking whether a craft studio or art glass gallery nearby takes commissions. If not, the specialist studios that do this by mail are well established, and a larger centre such as Antwerp may have a hot shop that's a reasonable drive away.
With roughly 262,000 residents, Ghent is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Antwerp, about 32 miles (51 km) away, which is where some providers serving Ghent are based.
Families in Ghent often end up using a provider from Brussels (31 miles, a larger centre) and Antwerp (32 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Cremation habits in Belgium
About 67.98%[1] of people in Belgium are cremated, up steadily over the years, so ashes are familiar to most families but still new to some. That mix shows up in jewelry too. Younger relatives may be keen on a pendant; older ones may prefer something without ashes, such as a paw print charm or a fur inclusion. Both are good memorials, and one family can easily have both.

Seasons, sweat and cold: jewelry care in Ghent
We don't have detailed weather data for Ghent, but the same few rules apply almost everywhere. Take a filled pendant off before swimming, keep resin away from heat and strong sun, and let glass warm up gradually after cold. Seal the screw on any pendant and check it every few weeks.

Memorial jewelry prices Ghent buyers can check
We haven't found reliable published prices from makers in Belgium, so the table shows the clearest ones we could verify from UK, Swiss and US makers. A Swiss memorial-diamond lab lists pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[5], needing about 12 months[6], and a UK glass studio charges £170[7] for a glass ash pendant. Local jewelers in Ghent will quote in euros or their own currency, so ask for a written total.

Before you divide the ashes: Flanders basics
Pet ashes are handled very differently from human remains in most places, Flanders included. There's no register, no permit to divide them and no limit on how many pieces you make. Rules only return when ashes leave your home, whether onto public land, into water or into the mail. Here's what applies locally.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Call your vet or an aftercare provider first. They'll explain how and when your pet is collected; jewelry is a question for later.
- If you can, keep a lock of fur. Before collection, a small snip from under the chin or the ruff, placed in a paper envelope, is all a resin piece needs.
- Press a paw into something soft such as modelling clay, or use washable ink, if either is nearby. If that feels beyond you right now, leave it; the vet or crematory can often take one instead.
- Say when you book that you want ashes back, and ask for a little to be bagged apart for jewelry.
- Give yourself a few weeks. Deciding is harder while you're in shock, and a piece picked out a month from now will mean just as much.
- When you're ready, compare two routes: having a Ghent jeweler fill a piece the same day, or commissioning a custom design from a specialist studio.
Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
The Leie and Scheldt, the quays of the Graslei and Korenlei, Citadelpark and the lakes at Blaarmeersen are places many Ghent owners shared with their animals. Scattering in public places is governed by local rules, so ask the city before you do it. Plenty of families keep the urn at home and keep only a tiny portion in a pendant to carry to that favorite spot.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ghent?
The closest communities we cover are Brussels (about 31 miles) and Antwerp (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ghent too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Antwerp to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Antwerp (roughly 32 miles from Ghent) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Ghent page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 67.98%[1] of Belgium residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What metal should I choose if I have sensitive skin?
Titanium, niobium, platinum and nickel-free gold are the safest choices. Solid sterling silver suits most people but tarnishes. Surgical stainless steel is tough and inexpensive but contains some nickel, so very sensitive skin may react. If you can, try a sample from a Ghent jeweler for a few hours before ordering a sealed piece.
How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?
Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[9], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[10]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.
Do cremation pendants leak?
A well-made pendant with a sealed screw shouldn't. Leaks usually happen when the screw isn't glued and works loose with daily wear. Use the adhesive in the kit, or ask a Ghent jeweler to seal it permanently. Glass and memorial diamonds have no opening at all, so they can't leak.
