Expect to order more by mail and to ask a couple of shops before you find someone to fill a pendant. None of that makes the result any less good; it just means a bit more planning.

Before you divide the ashes: Brazil basics
Dividing a pet's ashes is entirely legal and very common. Most pieces take less than a teaspoon, so the bigger decision is what happens to the rest. Here's what Brazil allows for burial and scattering, and a reminder that if you plan to send ashes to a maker, the postal service's own rules apply on top of anything local.
From ashes to pendant in Sao Paulo: the steps
- Wait until you're ready. Ashes keep indefinitely, and there's no deadline for jewelry.
- Collect prints and fur early if you can. Once cremation has happened there's no way to take a paw print, nose print or fur clipping, and having them widens what you can order later.
- Measure carefully. Size a ring late in the day, hold a chain to your collarbone to judge length, and check with each relative about metals that irritate their skin.
- Ask the maker how they handle ashes. How much they need, how they label it, whether they return what they don't use.
- If you mail ashes, pack them properly. Put them in a sealed bag first, pad that bag inside a strong box, and send it by the tracked carrier the maker tells you to use.
- Approve a proof of the engraving, especially a paw or nose print, and only then let the maker start.

How do I fill a cremation pendant at home?
Work over a sheet of paper on a clear table. Unscrew the chamber, use the small funnel or straw from the kit to add a pinch of ash, tap gently to settle it, then add a drop of the supplied adhesive to the thread and screw it closed. Wipe off any excess and leave it to cure overnight before wearing.
Is cremation jewelry safe for children to wear?
For younger children, a piece with a sealed chamber and a breakaway cord is safer than a long chain, and a glass bead or a charm kept in a special box may be better still. Older children often love wearing a small pendant. Whatever you choose, make sure the screw is sealed with adhesive.
Can I use my pet's fur instead of ashes?
Yes. Fur can't go into molten glass, but it sets well in resin, where you can still see its color. Some memorial-diamond labs can also work from fur; one Swiss lab needs about 5 g[6]. Fur has to be clipped before cremation, so if your pet is still with you, it's worth taking a little from a hidden spot now.
Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?
Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
My pet was cremated years ago. Can I still have jewelry made?
Yes. Cremated remains are stable mineral and don't change over time, so ashes from years ago work just as well. Open the urn over a sheet of paper, take a teaspoon with a clean spoon and seal the urn again. If the ashes are in a sealed container you'd rather not open, a Sao Paulo jeweler or the original crematory may help.
