Keeping your pet close in Strasbourg: pendants, rings and glass

Strasbourg, Grand Est

Finding pet cremation jewelry in Strasbourg

In a Strasbourg apartment, compact memorials tend to suit best: an urn tucked among books, a paw print pressed in clay, or a pendant with a few grains of ash. If more than one household wants a share, have the ashes portioned before ordering. Smaller pieces are easy to take to a family home in the countryside or across the Rhine.

Outdoor memorials in Strasbourg face cold winters and warm summers. Porous stone can crack as water freezes, so the local pink sandstone looks lovely but weathers faster than granite, bronze or glazed ceramic. Set a garden stone on gravel, keep engraving deep, and choose a hardy plant or tree if you'd like a living memorial in the garden. Brush off moss gently each spring.

Many Strasbourg owners start with the crematory that handled their pet. Some sell pendants and charms at the counter, and most will portion out a small amount of ashes for jewelry when asked, which saves you opening the main container later. If the range is small, you can still buy elsewhere and bring the portion to a local jeweler to fill.

Strasbourg is home to about 280,000 people, the largest of the 2 Grand Est communities we cover.

Cremation habits in France

With cremation at about 44.91%[1] in France, pet crematories can be further apart, and the drive to one may be long. Ask your vet which crematory they use and whether it can post a pendant or keepsake back together with the ashes. Doing it in one delivery saves a second trip or a second parcel.

The France figure comes from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Seasons, sweat and cold: jewelry care in Strasbourg

Without local climate figures for Strasbourg, one tip covers every season: photograph your piece and its engraving the day it arrives, front and back, in good light. If it's ever damaged or lost, a clear photo helps a jeweler repair or remake it faithfully, and it helps with an insurance claim too.

Budgeting for a pendant, ring or glass piece

The price of the cremation shapes the jewelry budget. Shared (communal) cremation sends no ashes home and costs far less; in the UK, the competition regulator found it two to five times cheaper than individual cremation[5]. For a pendant in Strasbourg, budget for individual cremation first, then the piece: a UK silver ring at £165–£300[6] shows what handmade costs (one UK maker's price).

The Grand Est price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Grand Est

Wearing ashes is a private choice, and Grand Est asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. Below is the Grand Est side; a postal carrier's own conditions sit alongside it.

In France, the strict rules on dividing human ashes don't apply to pets, so a pendant with your animal's ashes is entirely your choice. Pet crematoria often offer bijoux cinéraires or can set a small amount aside when the ashes are returned after an incinération individuelle. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, so choose individual cremation if you want jewelry.

From ashes to pendant in Strasbourg: the steps

  1. Ask the child what feels right to them. One child will want a piece to wear, while another prefers a special object kept in a drawer or on a shelf.
  2. Choose sturdy and simple. A sealed glass bead, a chunky steel charm or a keyring suits small hands better than a fine chain.
  3. Let them make the choices they can. The shape, the color and any wording belong to the child; the filling and the sealing belong to an adult.
  4. Avoid anything small enough to swallow where young children are concerned, and take long cords off at bedtime.
  5. Keep a little ash aside for later. A teenager may want a more grown-up piece in a few years.
  6. Mark the first wearing together. A short, quiet moment helps a child understand what the piece means.

Beyond the pendant: keeping your pet close

Strasbourg sits where French and German traditions meet, and families here remember pets in many ways, from a candle and photo at home to a plot in a pet cemetery. Remembrance around All Saints' Day in November is part of French family life, and some families mark a pet's memory at that time too, with flowers beside the urn. There is no single right way.

Questions people ask

How do France attitudes to cremation compare?

ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) puts the France human cremation rate at about 44.91%[1]. We show it on the Strasbourg page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?

Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[8], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[9]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.

How much does pet cremation jewelry cost in Strasbourg?

We haven't found reliable published prices from local makers, so we use the clearest overseas ones as a guide: US steel pendants start from $19.95[2], a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[10], and a Swiss lab lists memorial diamonds at $1,400–$40,500[11]. Local jewelers and crematories in Strasbourg will price in their own currency, so ask for a written total including shipping.

How much ash goes into a pendant?

Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[4], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[12] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.

Is cremation jewelry safe for children to wear?

For younger children, a piece with a sealed chamber and a breakaway cord is safer than a long chain, and a glass bead or a charm kept in a special box may be better still. Older children often love wearing a small pendant. Whatever you choose, make sure the screw is sealed with adhesive.

Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?

Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
