Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The quays along the Garonne, the Jardin Public, the Arcachon Basin and the Dune du Pilat are places many Bordeaux families shared with their animals. Beaches, forests and public gardens each have rules about ashes, so check with the local mairie first. Keeping most of the ashes at home and taking a pinch to the coast is a common compromise.
On All Saints' Day, the first of November, French families traditionally carry chrysanthemums to relatives' graves, and some in Bordeaux now remember a pet on the same day with a candle beside the urn or flowers by a garden stone. If you want a paw print or a lock of fur for that memorial, ask before the cremation takes place.
Glass memorial pieces are harder to find locally in a city like Bordeaux, because they need a studio with a kiln and someone who works in fused or lampworked glass. It's worth checking whether a craft studio or art glass gallery nearby takes commissions. If not, the specialist studios that do this by mail are well established, and a larger centre such as Bordeaux may have a hot shop that's a reasonable drive away.

a pinch (at most about a teaspoon)[4]
An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
Only about 44.91%[1] of people in France are cremated, so burial is still the local tradition and ashes jewelry may feel new to some of your relatives. That's fine. A pendant holds only a pinch, and many people who have never thought about it find they like the idea once they see one. You may need to explain it once, gently, and then it becomes simply your piece.
For the France figure we rely on ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bordeaux rather than as pet data.
Timing fittings and ceremonies around Bordeaux's weather
We don't have a nearby weather station for Bordeaux, so plan around habits that matter anywhere. Keep perfume, hairspray and lotion off memorial pieces, since they cloud glass and dull metal; put jewelry on last when dressing; and take it off first at night. Those small routines protect a piece more than any choice about climate.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
We haven't found reliable published prices from makers in France, so the table shows the clearest ones we could verify from UK, Swiss and US makers. A Swiss memorial-diamond lab lists pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[5], needing about 12 months[6], and a UK glass studio charges £170[7] for a glass ash pendant. Local jewelers in Bordeaux will quote in euros or their own currency, so ask for a written total.

Local rules worth knowing before you order
If you rent or share a building in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, a pendant raises no issues at all, but burying the rest of the ashes in a shared garden might. Landlords, homeowners' associations and park authorities can set conditions of their own. The notes below give Nouvelle-Aquitaine's general position; check with whoever controls the land before scattering or burying what's left.
In France, the strict rules on dividing human ashes don't apply to pets, so a pendant with your animal's ashes is entirely your choice. Pet crematoria often offer bijoux cinéraires or can set a small amount aside when the ashes are returned after an incinération individuelle. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, so choose individual cremation if you want jewelry.
A calm plan for getting the piece made
- List everyone who might want something, and don't forget those who were close to your pet but haven't said anything.
- Ask each person three things: whether they'd prefer a necklace, a ring or a keyring; what metal sits well on their skin; and if they want ashes inside, fur, or just a print.
- Work out how far the ashes go. Once you know the number of pieces, the sharing planner works out how to divide them.
- Order the set from one maker so finishes, chains and engraving match, and ask whether they price sets differently.
- Fill every piece in one sitting, so the urn is opened a single time and sealed up properly when you're done.
- Post far-away pieces with tracking, each in its own little box alongside a care card and a few written words.
More ways to keep your pet in daily life
An échoppe garden in Bordeaux has room for a small memorial stone or a potted olive or fig planted with ashes, while in a center apartment a compact urn or pendant usually fits better. Some families choose an urn in local oak, a nod to the wine barrels made in the region. Knowing where it will sit makes the choice of style much easier.

Questions people ask
How do France attitudes to cremation compare?
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) puts the France human cremation rate at about 44.91%[1]. We show it on the Bordeaux page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How much does pet cremation jewelry cost in Bordeaux?
We haven't found reliable published prices from local makers, so we use the clearest overseas ones as a guide: US steel pendants start from $19.95[2], a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[7], and a Swiss lab lists memorial diamonds at $1,400–$40,500[5]. Local jewelers and crematories in Bordeaux will price in their own currency, so ask for a written total including shipping.
How do I get a small portion out of a sealed urn in Bordeaux?
Many urns open from the base, with screws or a sliding panel under a felt pad. Inside there's usually a plastic bag with a twist tie. Open it over a tray, lift out a spoonful with a dry teaspoon, then retie the bag and close the urn. If the urn is glued, or you'd rather not do it, the crematory that returned the ashes or a Bordeaux jeweler can usually help.
How soon after cremation can I get a pendant filled in Bordeaux?
As soon as the ashes are home, which by our estimate is typically 3 to 14 days after cremation[9]. A ready-made pendant can be filled by a local jeweler that same afternoon. There's no need to hurry, though. Many people wait weeks or months, and the ashes don't change while they wait.
Can I send my pet's ashes by post from Bordeaux?
Often yes within the country, but rules differ by postal service and many restrict sending ashes abroad. Check the current rules with the national post or a courier before you pack anything, and ask the maker how they want it sent. If sending feels risky, a self-fill pendant filled at home or by a local jeweler avoids mailing ashes at all.
Can a jeweler engrave a pendant that's already filled?
Often, as long as the engraving goes on a solid surface away from the sealed thread. Laser engraving produces little heat and doesn't touch the chamber. Hand and rotary engraving put pressure on the piece, so tell the engraver it holds ashes and ask them to check the seal afterwards. Where you can, engrave first and fill second.
