Rules for keeping, sharing and mailing ashes in Germany
There are very few rules about what you do with a pet's ashes. Keeping them at home, dividing them between family members and sealing a pinch in a pendant are all yours to decide. Where rules do come in is scattering the rest, burying them and sending them by post, which is why it's worth knowing the basics for Germany before you decide what happens to the ashes that don't go into jewelry.
In Germany, human ashes are tightly regulated and usually must go to a cemetery, which is why memorial diamonds from human ashes are typically made abroad. Pet ashes aren't covered by those rules, so keeping, dividing and wearing them is up to you. Ask the Tierkrematorium whether it offers Erinnerungsschmuck (memorial jewelry) or can pack a small portion separately.
From ashes to pendant in Germany: the steps
- Call your vet or an aftercare provider first. They'll explain how and when your pet is collected; jewelry is a question for later.
- If you can, keep a lock of fur. A resin piece needs only a small cutting, taken beneath the chin or from the ruff before your pet is collected and tucked into a paper envelope.
- Press a paw into something soft such as modelling clay, or use washable ink, if either is nearby. If that feels beyond you right now, leave it; the vet or crematory can often take one instead.
- Say when you book that you want ashes back, plus a small separate portion for jewelry.
- Give yourself a few weeks. Deciding is harder while you're in shock, and a piece picked out a month from now will mean just as much.

Can I scatter the rest of the ashes after filling jewelry in Germany?
Usually yes, with some care. Private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and public land often have their own rules. Do jewelers in Germany charge to fill a pendant bought elsewhere?
Some do, some don't, and a few decline the work. Where there's a charge it's usually modest and covers the adhesive and time. Ask when you call, and ask whether they'll seal the screw permanently. In the smaller towns across Germany, filling at home with the supplied kit is the usual alternative.
