Galway, Connacht
Where Galway families get memorial jewelry made
Stone walls and stone crosses are everywhere in the west of Ireland, and some Galway families like a memorial with the same feel: a piece of Connemara stone or limestone engraved with a name, set into the garden. Others prefer a tree or a hardy shrub that can take the wind off the bay. Choose something that will stand up to year-round rain.
Many Galway families have relatives in Dublin, Britain, America or Australia, and a memorial sometimes needs to cross the sea. Splitting the ashes lets emigrant sons and daughters hold part of the memory: the main urn stays on the dresser at home, and small sealed vessels travel. For flights, pack them in hand luggage with a short note explaining what they are, as security may ask.
Around Galway, it's common for a pet's ashes to come back months before anyone is ready to think about jewelry, and that's fine. Ashes keep indefinitely in a sealed container. When you are ready, a small portion can be taken from the urn with a clean spoon over a sheet of paper, and nothing about the timing affects the finished piece.
With roughly 80,000 residents, Galway is one of the Connacht communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Cork (98 miles, a larger centre) and Dublin (116 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

a pinch (at most about a teaspoon)[4]
An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

How Ireland feels about cremation, and what that means for jewelry
With cremation at about 26.56%[1] in Ireland, pet crematories can be further apart, and the drive to one may be long. Ask your vet which crematory they use and whether it can post a pendant or keepsake back together with the ashes. Doing it in one delivery saves a second trip or a second parcel.
For the Ireland figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Galway rather than as pet data.
Timing fittings and ceremonies around Galway's weather
Climate affects rings more than pendants. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, so if you're ordering a sealed ring in Galway, measure at the end of the day in a comfortable room and ask about a comfort-fit band. It's the single most common reason memorial rings get returned.

What pet cremation jewelry costs for Galway families
Ordering a memorial diamond from Galway usually means working with a Swiss or other European lab, and the deposit is the first thing to plan. One Swiss lab asks for 50% upfront[5] on stones priced $1,400–$40,500[6], and by our estimate diamonds take about 8.5 months on average across three providers[7]. A simple pendant is a fraction of that price and can be worn while you wait.

Before you divide the ashes: Connacht basics
Filling a memorial pendant isn't a regulated job in most places, Connacht included, so ask a jeweler or crematory how they store and label a portion rather than assuming a rule covers it. A sealed bag with your pet's name on it, kept apart from other work, is a fair expectation. The public rules that do exist concern burial and scattering, summarized below.
In Ireland, pet cremation jewelry is often bought through the crematorium or online from UK makers. If you order from abroad, check how the maker wants ashes sent and whether customs charges apply to the finished piece. A local jeweler who does repairs may be willing to fill and seal a self-fill pendant for you.
Your order, one step at a time
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. While your pet is still with the practice, staff can generally cut a lock of fur and press a paw print; after the body has left for the crematory, it's too late.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. With communal cremation no ashes come back to you, and a pendant can't be filled with ashes you don't have.
- Write a note on the form requesting roughly a teaspoon set apart in a little bag that carries your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. By our estimate, ashes are usually back with you in 3 to 14 days[9], and no jewelry decision has to be made before they arrive.
- Start with one simple piece. A self-fill steel or silver pendant is plenty at first; custom work can follow once you know what you want to wear.
- Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Having a friend or partner sitting with you tends to make the moment gentler.
Beyond the pendant: keeping your pet close
Ireland still buries most of its dead, with cremation at around a quarter, so keeping ashes at home can feel new to some Galway families. For a pet, many people go ahead anyway and find it comforting: a small urn on the dresser, a framed paw print, or a pendant carrying a pinch of ashes. There is no hurry, and sealed ashes keep safely.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Galway?
Usually yes. Cork is about 98 miles away and Dublin is about 116 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Galway page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) reports about 26.56%[1] of Ireland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I send my pet's ashes by post from Galway?
Often yes within the country, but rules differ by postal service and many restrict sending ashes abroad. Check the current rules with the national post or a courier before you pack anything, and ask the maker how they want it sent. If sending feels risky, a self-fill pendant filled at home or by a local jeweler avoids mailing ashes at all.
My pet was cremated years ago. Can I still have jewelry made?
Yes. Cremated remains are stable mineral and don't change over time, so ashes from years ago work just as well. Open the urn over a sheet of paper, take a teaspoon with a clean spoon and seal the urn again. If the ashes are in a sealed container you'd rather not open, a Galway jeweler or the original crematory may help.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[4], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[10] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
Can I use my pet's fur instead of ashes?
Yes. Fur can't go into molten glass, but it sets well in resin, where you can still see its color. Some memorial-diamond labs can also work from fur; one Swiss lab needs about 5 g[11]. Fur has to be clipped before cremation, so if your pet is still with you, it's worth taking a little from a hidden spot now.
