Sapporo families frequently do the same, then decide later whether to place the ashes in a pet grave, a temple's shared memorial or a garden. Ask for an urn size that fits the space you have, as apartments here can be compact.
Because the ground in Sapporo spends much of the year under snow, many families choose memorials that live indoors: a small urn, a framed paw print, a nameplate or a piece of jewellery that holds a little ash. Cremation in Japan and wearing a little of your pet
Cremation is the norm in Japan, at about 99.97%[1] of people. Where it's this common, people often keep a small share of ashes and pass the rest on, to be scattered, buried or kept by another relative. Jewelry fits neatly into that habit. Many families here plan the split from the start: a pinch for each pendant, a little for scattering and the rest in the urn.

Local rules worth knowing before you order
Pet ashes are handled very differently from human remains in most places, Hokkaido included. There's no register, no permit to divide them and no limit on how many pieces you make. Rules only return when ashes leave your home, whether onto public land, into water or into the mail. Here's what applies locally.
In Japan, keeping a small share of remains close at home is a familiar tradition, and dividing remains between family members is common. Pet funeral providers often offer small keepsake pendants as part of a package. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) before booking, since some municipal routes don't return them, and whether a portion can be set aside for jewelry.
A simple order checklist
- Take fur now, from somewhere hidden. Snip a little from the chest or beneath the collar and store it in a named envelope; that clipping keeps resin pieces, and some diamonds, possible later.
- Make a print on a calm day. An engraver needs a crisp image; a pet-safe stamp pad, or a pressing in salt dough, provides one, and failing that, photograph the paw pad against something light-colored.
- Tell your vet what you'd like. Ask them to note individual cremation with ashes returned and a teaspoon bagged separately, so nobody has to ask you on the hardest day.
- Browse without buying. Bookmark a few designs that appeal, note the chamber capacity and the metal, and leave anything that would be sealed or dated until later.
- Talk to the family quietly. Ask around about who might like a piece, so that when you request a portion it covers everyone.

Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
Temples across Japan hold memorial services for pets, and many families in Sapporo mark dates such as the 49th day or the first anniversary with a visit, flowers or incense. Why does the Sapporo page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I buy a pendant overseas and have it filled in Sapporo?
Yes, and it's often the simplest route. Order the piece empty so no ashes cross a border, then fill it yourself with the kit or have a local jeweler do it. Check the metal, chamber size and type of closure in the listing, and budget for shipping and any import charges on top of the price shown.
Can I get matching pieces for family in other cities?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people choose jewelry. Rules vary by airline and country, so check before you fly.
How much ash goes into a pendant?

Can a jeweler engrave a pendant that's already filled?
Often, as long as the engraving goes on a solid surface away from the sealed thread. Laser engraving produces little heat and doesn't touch the chamber. Hand and rotary engraving put pressure on the piece, so tell the engraver it holds ashes and ask them to check the seal afterwards. Where you can, engrave first and fill second.
