Amsterdam, North Holland
Jewelers, glass artists and online makers near Amsterdam
The Netherlands has a strong tradition of planting and gardening, and some Amsterdam families like the idea of a bio urn with bulbs or a small tree, planted in a garden, an allotment or a relative's yard in the countryside. Tulips and daffodils planted in autumn will flower in spring. If you might move, hold back a little of the ashes in a keepsake first.
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, many Amsterdammers think of the water, whether a canal, the IJ or the North Sea coast at Zandvoort. Busy canals and beaches are shared spaces, so choose a calm, quiet moment. Setting aside a spoonful in a small urn, a pendant or a keepsake box before any scattering means something stays with you.
A city the size of Amsterdam usually has everything this specialty needs within an hour's drive: independent jewelers who will fill and seal a pendant while you wait, glass studios that take commissions, and pet crematories with a shelf of ready-made keepsake pieces. The catch is choice. Two pendants that look identical online can differ a lot in how the screw is threaded and whether the maker glues it, so go and hold a few before you decide, even if you end up ordering from somewhere else.
About 872,000 people live in Amsterdam, which makes it the largest of the 2 North Holland communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Haarlem (11 miles), Utrecht (21 miles) and The Hague (33 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

a pinch (at most about a teaspoon)[4]
An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Netherlands
Roughly 68.37%[1] of funerals in Netherlands end in cremation. Where habits are mixed, a relative may worry that dividing ashes is disrespectful. It can help to explain that a pendant takes a pinch, the rest stays together and nothing stops you burying or scattering the main portion later. Put that way, most objections soften.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Netherlands figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Amsterdam tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How the local climate affects fit, seals and finish
Climate affects rings more than pendants. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, so if you're ordering a sealed ring in Amsterdam, measure at the end of the day in a comfortable room and ask about a comfort-fit band. It's the single most common reason memorial rings get returned.

How much to budget for a memorial piece
Memorial diamonds are one area where Europe has its own labs. One Swiss lab prices pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[5] and asks for at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[6]. Everyday pieces cost far less: a UK glass charm bead or silver-and-glass ring runs £120–£395[7] (one UK maker's price). Treat the table as a guide for Amsterdam, not a quote.

What North Holland allows with your pet's ashes
There are very few rules about what you do with a pet's ashes. Keeping them at home, dividing them between family members and sealing a pinch in a pendant are all yours to decide. Where rules do come in is scattering the rest, burying them and sending them by post, which is why it's worth knowing the basics for North Holland before you decide what happens to the ashes that don't go into jewelry.
In the Netherlands, ashes jewelry (assieraden) is well known from human memorials, and many jewelers who make pieces for people also make them for pets. That makes it easier than in many countries to find someone local to fill and seal a pendant. Make sure you choose individual cremation, as collective cremation doesn't return ashes.
A calm plan for getting the piece made
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. While your pet is still with the practice, staff can generally cut a lock of fur and press a paw print; after the body has left for the crematory, it's too late.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, and without ashes a filled pendant isn't possible.
- Write a note on the form asking for about a teaspoon in its own small bag, labeled with your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. By our estimate, ashes are usually back with you in 3 to 14 days[9], and no jewelry decision has to be made before they arrive.
- Start with one simple piece. A steel or silver pendant you fill yourself is enough to begin with; custom work can come later, once you know what you like wearing.
- Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Many people find the moment easier with a partner or friend at the table.
Remembering your pet, in Amsterdam and beyond
Amsterdam homes are compact, so many families choose a small memorial: an urn for a windowsill or bookshelf, a pendant holding a trace of ashes, a framed paw print, or a memorial stone for a balcony or houseboat deck planter. Dutch taste leans toward simple, well-designed pieces. Prints and clippings have to be taken before collection, so mention them when you first get in touch.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Amsterdam?
The closest communities we cover are Haarlem (about 11 miles), Utrecht (about 21 miles) and The Hague (about 33 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Amsterdam too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Amsterdam page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How long does a memorial diamond take to make?
Much longer than any other piece. One US lab quotes 7–10 months[10] from submission to delivery, a Swiss lab about 12 months[11], and across three providers the average is about 8.5 months[12]. If you want something to wear sooner, many people order a simple pendant first and add the diamond later.
Can a jeweler engrave a pendant that's already filled?
Often, as long as the engraving goes on a solid surface away from the sealed thread. Laser engraving produces little heat and doesn't touch the chamber. Hand and rotary engraving put pressure on the piece, so tell the engraver it holds ashes and ask them to check the seal afterwards. Where you can, engrave first and fill second.
How do I fill a cremation pendant at home?
Work over a sheet of paper on a clear table. Unscrew the chamber, use the small funnel or straw from the kit to add a pinch of ash, tap gently to settle it, then add a drop of the supplied adhesive to the thread and screw it closed. Wipe off any excess and leave it to cure overnight before wearing.
Is there a jeweler in Amsterdam who will fill a cremation pendant?
In a city the size of Amsterdam, usually yes. Independent jewelers, especially those who do repairs and engraving, are most likely to fill and seal a pendant, sometimes while you wait. Some charge a small fee, and a few prefer not to handle ashes. Pet crematories may also fill pieces they sell. Call ahead and ask whether they seal the screw permanently.
