Queenstown, Otago
Local maker or mail-in: the Queenstown picture
Many Māori regard lakes, rivers and certain peaks as places with deep cultural and spiritual significance, and scattering ashes in waterways can cause real offence. Around Wakatipu, it is more respectful to bury ashes in your own garden, mix them into the soil around a tree, or scatter them on private land with the owner's permission. Keeping some at home is also a good option.
Around seven in ten New Zealanders are cremated, so keeping ashes at home or placing them somewhere meaningful is familiar to many Queenstown families. With mountains and lakes filling every view, a lot of people want a memorial linked to the landscape. A schist stone from the district, engraved with a name and placed in the garden, suits the local look and weathers well.
One of the nice things about a town the size of Queenstown is that someone local may have done this before. The person who engraves trophies, the jeweler who repairs watches or the potter at the weekend market may be willing to help with a small commission, and they'll often charge less than a city studio. Ask around; people are usually glad to help with something like this.
With roughly 15,000 residents, Queenstown is one of the Otago communities we cover.
Our estimate
3,950
How many dog- or cat-owning households Queenstown has (estimate)
How we calculated this
15,000 ÷ 2.7 = 5,556 households; × 31% (dog) + 40% (cat) = 3,950. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
330
dog and cat deaths per year in Queenstown, our estimate
How we calculated this
3,950 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 330 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
31%[1]
31% of New Zealand households have a dog, down from 34% in 2020.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
40%[3]
40% of New Zealand households have a cat - cats are NZ's most popular pet.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in New Zealand
The cremation share in New Zealand sits near 69%[5] and has been climbing. Families in the middle of that shift often have one relative with an urn and another with a grave, and pet aftercare can mirror the split. A pendant works either way: it sits as comfortably beside a burial plot as beside an urn on the mantel.
We take the New Zealand rate from The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Queenstown, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How the local climate affects fit, seals and finish
If you're mailing ashes from Queenstown to a maker, weather mostly affects how long the parcel takes. Send early in the week, use tracking and a signature, and ask the maker to confirm arrival. The ashes themselves aren't harmed by heat or cold; only resin pieces coming back need to avoid long hot waits.

Budgeting for a pendant, ring or glass piece
Many families around Queenstown buy online from overseas, which means adding international shipping and possibly import charges to the prices below. Most pet cremation jewelry costs $30–$300+[6] in US dollars, and memorial diamonds are far more: one Swiss lab lists pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[7]. Posting ashes overseas has its own rules, so a local filler or self-fill piece is often simpler.

What Otago allows with your pet's ashes
You don't need anyone's permission to wear your pet's ashes. The rules that matter for jewelry are about moving ashes: postal services set their own conditions for mailing them, and airlines and borders sometimes ask questions. The notes below cover what Otago says about burial and scattering, which is useful for the ashes left over once the pendants are filled.
In New Zealand, keepsake jewelry is usually arranged through the pet crematorium or ordered online, often from overseas makers. Posting ashes internationally can be restricted, so a self-fill pendant filled at home, or by a local jeweler, is often the easiest route. Ask the crematorium to set a small amount aside for jewelry when you arrange the cremation.
Getting a memorial piece made, step by step
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. While your pet is still with the practice, staff can generally cut a lock of fur and press a paw print; after the body has left for the crematory, it's too late.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. With communal cremation no ashes come back to you, and a pendant can't be filled with ashes you don't have.
- Write a note on the form requesting roughly a teaspoon set apart in a little bag that carries your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. Ashes usually come home within 3 to 14 days, by our estimate[9], and nothing about jewelry needs deciding before then.
- Start with one simple piece. A self-fill steel or silver pendant is plenty at first; custom work can follow once you know what you want to wear.
- Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Having a friend or partner sitting with you tends to make the moment gentler.
Remembering your pet, in Queenstown and beyond
Queenstown's population moves around more than most New Zealand towns, with many people arriving for a few seasons before settling elsewhere. A memorial that fits in a suitcase suits that life: a pocket-sized urn, a greenstone-style pendant with a little ash, a paw print on a tile or a photo book. Your pet can come with you when you move on, instead of staying behind in a rented garden.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Queenstown?
By our estimate, about 3,950 households in Queenstown have at least one dog or cat, and around 330 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 15,000, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Why does the Queenstown page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. The Spinoff, citing FDANZ 2023 Funeral Industry Trends Report (2023) reports about 69%[5] of New Zealand residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Who can fill a memorial pendant near Queenstown?
Try the crematory that handled your pet first; many fill pendants they sell and some will fill one you bought elsewhere. Local jewelers who do repairs are the next option. If no one nearby does it, filling at home is simple: the kit comes with a funnel and adhesive, and it takes about ten minutes.
How do I get a small portion out of a sealed urn in Queenstown?
Many urns open from the base, with screws or a sliding panel under a felt pad. Inside there's usually a plastic bag with a twist tie. Open it over a tray, lift out a spoonful with a dry teaspoon, then retie the bag and close the urn. If the urn is glued, or you'd rather not do it, the crematory that returned the ashes or a Queenstown jeweler can usually help.
Can I get matching pieces for family in other cities?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people choose jewelry. Order the whole set from one maker so the pieces match, agree how much ash each gets and decide whether you'll fill them in Queenstown and post them, or send each relative an empty piece plus a small sealed portion. The ashes sharing planner helps with the split.
Can a jeweler engrave a pendant that's already filled?
Often, as long as the engraving goes on a solid surface away from the sealed thread. Laser engraving produces little heat and doesn't touch the chamber. Hand and rotary engraving put pressure on the piece, so tell the engraver it holds ashes and ask them to check the seal afterwards. Where you can, engrave first and fill second.
