Lucerne, Switzerland
Where Lucerne families get memorial jewelry made
Around nine in ten people in Switzerland are cremated, and laying ashes at the roots of a forest tree or in a shared grave is a familiar choice for people here. Pet owners often follow a similar instinct: a young tree planted over the ashes in a garden, or ashes scattered on a meadow where that is permitted. Others simply keep an urn at home, which is just as good.
Swiss woodcarving and stone craft remain strong in central Switzerland, and some Lucerne families commission a memorial in that spirit: a carved wooden box, a smooth river stone engraved with a name, or a small slate plaque for a balcony. Request a written proof before any engraving begins. Relatives living abroad can each receive a sealed keepsake with a small portion of the ashes.
One of the nice things about a town the size of Lucerne is that someone local may have done this before. The person who engraves trophies, the jeweler who repairs watches or the potter at the weekend market may be willing to help with a small commission, and they'll often charge less than a city studio. Ask around; people are usually glad to help with something like this.
With roughly 82,000 residents, Lucerne is one of the Switzerland communities we cover. Zurich, roughly 25 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lucerne run from there.
Families in Lucerne often end up using a provider from Kusnacht (23 miles), Zollikon (24 miles) and Zurich (25 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

a pinch (at most about a teaspoon)[4]
An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
Cremation covers about 90%[1] of human deaths in Switzerland, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[5] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.
That Switzerland rate is a human one, published by bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). We quote it for Lucerne only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Wearing ash jewelry through Lucerne's seasons
We don't have detailed weather data for Lucerne, but the same few rules apply almost everywhere. Take a filled pendant off before swimming, keep resin away from heat and strong sun, and let glass warm up gradually after cold. Seal the screw on any pendant and check it every few weeks.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
Ordering a memorial diamond from Lucerne usually means working with a Swiss or other European lab, and the deposit is the first thing to plan. One Swiss lab asks for 50% upfront[6] on stones priced $1,400–$40,500[7], and by our estimate diamonds take about 8.5 months on average across three providers[8]. A simple pendant is a fraction of that price and can be worn while you wait.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Switzerland: Switzerland costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules for keeping, sharing and mailing ashes in Switzerland
Pet ashes are handled very differently from human remains in most places, Switzerland included. There's no register, no permit to divide them and no limit on how many pieces you make. Rules only return when ashes leave your home, whether onto public land, into water or into the mail. Here's what applies locally.
From ashes to pendant in Lucerne: the steps
- Set a small portion aside. Ask the crematory to pack a teaspoon separately, or take one from the urn yourself with a clean spoon over a sheet of paper.
- Decide who the pieces are for. Count everyone who wants one before you buy, so the set matches and the portions are planned.
- Choose a material that fits daily life. Sensitive skin does well with steel or titanium; glass can't leak; sterling silver looks traditional; and a diamond is the choice when you want something that lasts.
- Pick local filling or mail-in. A Lucerne jeweler can fill and seal in person; a specialist elsewhere may offer more designs but means mailing ashes.
- Get a written price. Check whether filling, sealing, the chain, engraving and return postage are included.
- Seal and check. Confirm adhesive has gone on the screw thread, and look it over once more after you've worn it for a week.
Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
Lucerne's Lion Monument, the dying lion carved into a sandstone cliff to honour Swiss Guards killed in 1792, shows how the city values memorials that endure. For a pet, families choose anything from a small urn or engraved stone to a pendant or clay paw impression. In an apartment, a compact piece on a shelf or windowsill suits the space. The decision can wait weeks if you need it to.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Lucerne?
The closest communities we cover are Kusnacht (about 23 miles), Zollikon (about 24 miles) and Zurich (about 25 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Lucerne too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Switzerland?
For people, yes: about 90%[1] of Switzerland deaths end in cremation, according to bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Lucerne follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Lucerne actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Zurich, about 25 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Lucerne and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can the crematory near Lucerne set ashes aside for jewelry?
Usually yes, if you ask before the ashes are returned. Most crematories will pack a teaspoon or so separately in a small labeled bag, which saves you opening the main container later. Your vet in Lucerne can pass the request on. Some regional crematories also sell pendants and will fill one before sending everything back.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[4], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[9] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
Who can fill a memorial pendant near Lucerne?
Try the crematory that handled your pet first; many fill pendants they sell and some will fill one you bought elsewhere. Local jewelers who do repairs are the next option. If no one nearby does it, filling at home is simple: the kit comes with a funnel and adhesive, and it takes about ten minutes.
