Lausanne, Vaud
Jewelers, glass artists and online makers near Lausanne
Lake Geneva, the Lavaux vineyards and the forests above the city give many Lausanne families a place they associate with their pet. Some choose a biodegradable urn or a small scattering; others keep all the ashes at home and simply return to those places. Before scattering or burying anything on land you do not own, ask the owner or commune first. Keeping a small portion back leaves room for jewelry later.
Paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings can only be taken before cremation, so ask about them at the start. In a city with many international residents, families are often spread across several countries, and dividing ashes lets each person keep something: a mini urn, a pendant or a small glass keepsake. Engraving and memorial pieces can be ordered later without hurry.
Lausanne is big enough to have a few jewelers who will fill a memorial pendant and at least one pet crematory with keepsake pieces on display, but small enough that you'll often be talking to the owner. Ring round two or three shops and ask plainly: have you filled a cremation pendant before, and do you seal the screw? The answer tells you quickly who is comfortable with this kind of work and who would rather not.
About 139,000 people live in Lausanne. Geneva, roughly 32 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lausanne run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Geneva (32 miles), Bern (49 miles) and Basel (85 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lausanne too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Switzerland
Cremation covers about 90%[1] of human deaths in Switzerland, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[5] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.
Source for the Switzerland number: bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Lausanne, so the human figure is the best local signal available.
Lausanne weather, water and your memorial piece
Whatever Lausanne's weather, the biggest risks to a memorial piece are everyday ones: a chain caught on a sweater, sweat in a thread, a glass bead dropped on tile. Choose a sturdy bail and clasp, seal the screw and keep a small pouch handy for when you take it off.

Memorial jewelry prices Lausanne buyers can check
We haven't found reliable published prices from makers in Switzerland, so the table shows the clearest ones we could verify from UK, Swiss and US makers. A Swiss memorial-diamond lab lists pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[6], needing about 12 months[7], and a UK glass studio charges £170[8] for a glass ash pendant. Local jewelers in Lausanne will quote in euros or their own currency, so ask for a written total.

Mailing, dividing and scattering: the rules in Vaud
Wearing ashes is a private choice, and Vaud asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. Below is the Vaud side; a postal carrier's own conditions sit alongside it.
Your order, one step at a time
- Call your vet or an aftercare provider first. Collection, and when it happens, is what they'll explain; the jewelry can be thought about afterwards.
- If you can, keep a lock of fur. Before collection, a small snip from under the chin or the ruff, placed in a paper envelope, is all a resin piece needs.
- Press a paw into something soft if you have modelling clay or washable ink to hand. Skip it if it feels like too much; the vet or crematory may take one.
- Say when you book that you want ashes back, plus a small separate portion for jewelry.
- Give yourself a few weeks. Shock makes choices harder, and a pendant chosen a month later means every bit as much.
- When you're ready, compare two routes: a jeweler near Lausanne for a same-day fill, or a specialist studio for a custom design.
Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
Most Lausanne homes are apartments, so memorials usually live indoors: a compact urn on a shelf, a framed paw print, or a small keepsake box. Families with a garden or balcony may add a planted urn or a small stone. If you rent or might move, a portable memorial is easier to take along. Decide where the memory will sit day to day, then choose a size and material that suits it.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Geneva to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Geneva (roughly 32 miles from Lausanne) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Switzerland?
For people, yes: about 90%[1] of Switzerland deaths end in cremation, according to bestatter.ch (Swiss funeral services association) (2020). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Lausanne follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Lausanne?
The closest communities we cover are Geneva (about 32 miles), Bern (about 49 miles) and Basel (about 85 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Lausanne too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How much does pet cremation jewelry cost in Lausanne?
We haven't found reliable published prices from local makers, so we use the clearest overseas ones as a guide: US steel pendants start from $19.95[2], a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[8], and a Swiss lab lists memorial diamonds at $1,400–$40,500[6]. Local jewelers and crematories in Lausanne will price in their own currency, so ask for a written total including shipping.
How do I fill a cremation pendant at home?
Work over a sheet of paper on a clear table. Unscrew the chamber, use the small funnel or straw from the kit to add a pinch of ash, tap gently to settle it, then add a drop of the supplied adhesive to the thread and screw it closed. Wipe off any excess and leave it to cure overnight before wearing.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[4], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[10] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
