Who fills and seals ash jewelry around Ontario

With so many Ontario homes built in the last two decades, families often want a memorial that moves with them rather than a spot in the yard they may leave. Urns, small keepsake containers, jewelry holding a pinch of ashes and indoor photo frames all travel easily. If you rent, a portable keepsake avoids any question about burying remains on property that isn't yours.

Hard, dry ground and summer heat make outdoor memorials in Ontario a practical question. A memorial stone or engraved marker stands up to sun far better than wood, and a biodegradable urn planted with a drought-tolerant tree can suit a garden better than a thirsty shrub. If you plan to move, a small stone you can take with you is a sensible alternative to planting.

A place like Ontario often has one jeweler most people use for repairs, and that person is frequently the best bet for a memorial fill. They know their tools, handle small screws daily and will often do the job at the counter. If they haven't filled an ash piece before, bring the maker's instructions and ask them to read them first.

With roughly 187,013 residents, Ontario is the 24th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Ontario are based about 12 miles away in Fontana, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Montclair (3 miles), Upland (4 miles) and Rancho Cucamonga (4 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

69,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Ontario has (estimate)

How we calculated this

187,013 ÷ 2.5 = 74,805 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 69,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

5,750

dog and cat deaths per year in Ontario, our estimate

How we calculated this

69,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 5,750 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science; we only apply it to this.

A pet at home in Ontario

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in California

Cremation covers about 70.5%[5] of human deaths in California, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[6] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.

The California figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Ontario

If you're mailing ashes from Ontario to a maker, weather mostly affects how long the parcel takes. Send early in the week, use tracking and a signature, and ask the maker to confirm arrival. The ashes themselves aren't harmed by heat or cold; only resin pieces coming back need to avoid long hot waits.

Memorial jewelry prices Ontario buyers can check

Buying for a whole family changes the math. Stainless steel pendants start from $19.95[7], so five of them can cost less than a single sterling necklace from the top of the $88–$298[8] range. For Ontario families dividing ashes between several relatives, a steel set with one silver piece for the person closest to the pet is a common compromise.

The full price table by product is on our California page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you divide the ashes: California basics

Pet ashes are handled very differently from human remains in most places, California included. There's no register, no permit to divide them and no limit on how many pieces you make. Rules only return when ashes leave your home, whether onto public land, into water or into the mail. Here's what applies locally.

California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ontario.

Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Ontario's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

A calm plan for getting the piece made

  1. Call your vet or an aftercare provider first. Collection, and when it happens, is what they'll explain; the jewelry can be thought about afterwards.
  2. If you can, keep a lock of fur. A resin piece needs only a small cutting, taken beneath the chin or from the ruff before your pet is collected and tucked into a paper envelope.
  3. Press a paw into something soft such as modelling clay, or use washable ink, if either is nearby. If that feels beyond you right now, leave it; the vet or crematory can often take one instead.
  4. Say when you book that you want ashes back, and ask for a little to be bagged apart for jewelry.
  5. Give yourself a few weeks. Shock makes choices harder, and a pendant chosen a month later means every bit as much.
  6. When you're ready, compare two routes: having an Ontario jeweler fill a piece the same day, or commissioning a custom design from a specialist studio.

Remembering your pet, in Ontario and beyond

The San Gabriel Mountains line the northern horizon on clear days, and Mount Baldy often carries snow in winter, which makes the foothills a place many local families think of for a quiet farewell. If you'd like to scatter some ashes in the mountains or a regional park, check the rules for that particular land first, since public agencies set their own. Keeping a portion back for an urn or keepsake gives you both.

the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures, there are guides for the big decisions and articles for the details, or see what other families chose in the poll results, Compare every option on our services page. If you live between Ontario and Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego, either page applies. Every other community in California, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask

How many pet owners live in Ontario?

By our estimate, about 69,000 households in Ontario have at least one dog or cat, and around 5,750 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 187,013, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ontario?

Usually yes. Montclair is about 3 miles away, Upland is about 4 miles away and Rancho Cucamonga is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Fontana to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Fontana (roughly 12 miles from Ontario) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the Ontario page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

How soon after cremation can I get a pendant filled in Ontario?

As soon as the ashes are home, which by our estimate is typically 3 to 14 days after cremation[10]. A ready-made pendant can be filled by a local jeweler that same afternoon. There's no need to hurry, though. Many people wait weeks or months, and the ashes don't change while they wait.

Can a jeweler engrave a pendant that's already filled?

Often, as long as the engraving goes on a solid surface away from the sealed thread. Laser engraving produces little heat and doesn't touch the chamber. Hand and rotary engraving put pressure on the piece, so tell the engraver it holds ashes and ask them to check the seal afterwards. Where you can, engrave first and fill second.
