Keeping your pet close in Whittier: pendants, rings and glass

Whittier, California

Jewelers, glass artists and online makers near Whittier

Whittier's older homes often have mature gardens, and many families place a pet memorial there: an engraved stone under a citrus tree, a plaque among roses or a planter by the porch. Stone and sealed ceramic hold up better than resin in the inland sun. Indoors, a wooden urn on a mantel suits the craftsman character of many Whittier homes, and small urns fit any shelf.

With many multigenerational families in Whittier, dividing a pet's ashes among relatives is common: a main urn at home, small keepsake urns for grandparents, pendants for teenagers, so everyone has something personal to keep. Día de los Muertos altars in many homes also give a yearly place for a pet's photo and candle. A paw print has to be taken before cremation, so mention it when you first call.

Around Whittier, it's common for a pet's ashes to come back months before anyone is ready to think about jewelry, and that's fine. Ashes keep indefinitely in a sealed container. When you are ready, a small portion can be taken from the urn with a clean spoon over a sheet of paper, and nothing about the timing affects the finished piece.

About 85,815 people live in Whittier, which makes it the 92nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Anaheim, about 11 miles (17 km) away, which is where some providers serving Whittier are based.

Whittier sits within easy reach of Santa Fe Springs (3 miles), Pico Rivera (4 miles) and La Mirada (5 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Whittier; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

31,500

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Whittier

How we calculated this

85,815 ÷ 2.5 = 34,326 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 31,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

2,650

Whittier families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

31,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,650 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How California feels about cremation, and what that means for jewelry

With about 70.5%[5] of people in California choosing cremation, the local market for memorial products is well developed, and that includes jewelry. You'll likely find crematories and funeral suppliers with a range of pendants and rings, sometimes the very same designs they offer for people. Use that familiarity: staff can usually tell you which closures hold up and which come back loose.

Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Whittier

If you like the outdoors around Whittier, the realistic risks are garden soil, sea air and the occasional knock rather than heat or ice. Take a filled pendant off for gardening and swimming, rinse off salt after a day at the coast and keep glass pieces away from stone floors and hard countertops, where a drop is most likely to chip them.

Gentle weather in Whittier tempts people to wear a piece everywhere: the garden, the beach, the gym. That's where knocks happen. If you'll wear it hard, choose a flush design with no protruding screw, or a solid glass or stone piece, and save a delicate hollow pendant for quieter days.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Whittier

Budgeting for a pendant, ring or glass piece

Most pet cremation jewelry in the US costs $30–$300+[6] (per one large retailer), and the table below shows where each material sits. Memorial diamonds are in a different league: a quarter-carat stone is listed at $3,499[7] by one of the larger US labs, about 27 times a typical sterling pendant[8]. If you're in Whittier and weighing a diamond against a set of silver pieces for the whole family, that ratio is worth keeping in mind.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in California

Before you split the ashes, it helps to know what you'll do with the part that won't go into jewelry, because that's where California's rules come in. Scattering on land you don't own, burying in a shared garden and releasing ashes into water can each carry conditions. The piece you wear carries none.

Not sure which office covers Whittier? The California local government directory is the official list.

Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Whittier's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

Your order, one step at a time

  1. Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. While your pet is still with the practice, staff can generally cut a lock of fur and press a paw print; after the body has left for the crematory, it's too late.
  2. Check the cremation form says individual or private. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, and without ashes a filled pendant isn't possible.
  3. Write a note on the form asking for about a teaspoon in its own small bag, labeled with your pet's name.
  4. Let the first days pass. Ashes usually come home within 3 to 14 days, by our estimate[10], and nothing about jewelry needs deciding before then.
  5. Start with one simple piece. A steel or silver pendant you fill yourself is enough to begin with; custom work can come later, once you know what you like wearing.
  6. Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Many people find the moment easier with a partner or friend at the table.

More ways to keep your pet in daily life

Some Whittier families like the idea of scattering ashes in the Puente Hills, where they spent time with their pets. The preserve has its own rules, so check with the managing authority first. Many people keep part of the ashes at home, in a keepsake urn, pendant or memorial stone, so there's still something to hold after the rest has been released.

Questions people ask

Does the Whittier climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Whittier?

Usually yes. Santa Fe Springs is about 3 miles away, Pico Rivera is about 4 miles away and La Mirada is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Anaheim to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Anaheim (roughly 11 miles from Whittier) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is Whittier big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 31,500 Whittier households keep a dog or cat and around 2,650 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 85,815), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Can I swim in Whittier while wearing my ash pendant?

It's better not to. Chlorine and salt water can dull sterling silver and plated finishes, and water can work into a screw thread over time. Fused glass and memorial diamonds are fine in water, but the chain and clasp may not be. Take the piece off before the pool or the sea, and rinse and dry it if it does get wet.

How much ash goes into a pendant?

Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[11], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[12] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
