Local maker or mail-in: the Delray Beach picture
Delray Beach's arts scene and galleries along Atlantic Avenue appeal to families who want a memorial with a handmade quality: fused glass with ashes, a painted portrait, or a ceramic vessel. Custom pieces can take weeks or longer, so ask the artist for the timeline, the full cost and the amount of ash needed before you commit, and whether any unused ash comes back.
For residents of the western retirement communities, who often have family in the Northeast, memorials that pack flat are practical: a slim urn, a locket or a small set of keepsake vessels that grown children can take home after a visit. If you would like the ashes to be placed with you one day, note it in your own funeral wishes so family can follow through.
Living in or near Delray Beach often means mail-in makers are the practical choice for anything custom: glass beads, rings, paw print engraving or a memorial diamond. Before you send anything, ask the maker exactly how to pack the ashes, which service to use and how they'll confirm arrival. A good maker will send written instructions and often a prepaid kit.
With roughly 69,809 residents, Delray Beach is the 45th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 43 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Delray Beach run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Boynton Beach (5 miles), Boca Raton (7 miles) and Deerfield Beach (10 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Delray Beach too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
25,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Delray Beach
How we calculated this
69,809 ÷ 2.5 = 27,924 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 25,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,150
dog and cat deaths per year in Delray Beach, our estimate
How we calculated this
25,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,150 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
Cremation accounts for around 72.5%[5] of deaths in Florida, so the local trade is busy: crematories, funeral suppliers and jewelers all see ashes regularly. For you, that means more choice and some competition on price. It's reasonable to get two quotes for filling and sealing and to ask to see a finished memorial piece the jeweler has made.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Delray Beach tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Delray Beach
Climate affects rings more than pendants. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, so if you're ordering a sealed ring in Delray Beach, measure at the end of the day in a comfortable room and ask about a comfort-fit band. It's the single most common reason memorial rings get returned.
Memorial jewelry prices Delray Beach buyers can check
Most pet cremation jewelry in the US costs $30–$300+[6] (per one large retailer), and the table below shows where each material sits. Memorial diamonds are in a different league: a quarter-carat stone is listed at $3,499[7] by one of the larger US labs, about 27 times a typical sterling pendant[8]. If you're in Delray Beach and weighing a diamond against a set of silver pieces for the whole family, that ratio is worth keeping in mind.

Rules for keeping, sharing and mailing ashes in Florida
Rules around pet ashes are light compared with human ones. In most places, including Florida, nobody regulates keeping or wearing them. What's worth checking is the rest of the plan: where you can scatter or bury what's left, and how to send a small portion by post if your maker isn't local. The details below cover the local side.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Delray Beach.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Delray Beach may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A simple order checklist
- Wait until you're ready. Ashes don't deteriorate, so a piece can be made whenever it feels right.
- Collect prints and fur early if you can. Once cremation has happened there's no way to take a paw print, nose print or fur clipping, and having them widens what you can order later.
- Measure carefully. Ring size at the end of the day, chain length against your collarbone, and ask each relative about metal allergies.
- Ask the maker how they handle ashes. Find out the quantity they want, the way each portion is labeled, and what happens to any ash left over.
- If you mail ashes, pack them properly. Put them in a sealed bag first, pad that bag inside a strong box, and send it by the tracked carrier the maker tells you to use.
- Approve a proof for any engraving, especially paw or nose prints, before the piece is made.
Remembering your pet, in Delray Beach and beyond
West of Delray Beach, the Wakodahatchee Wetlands boardwalk draws people to watch herons, wood storks and turtles in a quiet setting, and some families visit there on an anniversary. Scattering ashes in a county preserve is generally not allowed without permission. At home, a flat marker beside the mailbox or a potted orchid on the patio can serve as a daily reminder.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Delray Beach?
The closest communities we cover are Boynton Beach (about 5 miles), Boca Raton (about 7 miles) and Deerfield Beach (about 10 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Delray Beach too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is Delray Beach big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 25,500 Delray Beach households keep a dog or cat and around 2,150 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 69,809), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Where are the providers that serve Delray Beach actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Hialeah, about 43 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Delray Beach and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Delray Beach follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I get matching pieces for family in other cities?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people choose jewelry. Order the whole set from one maker so the pieces match, agree how much ash each gets and decide whether you'll fill them in Delray Beach and post them, or send each relative an empty piece plus a small sealed portion. The ashes sharing planner helps with the split.
Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?
Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
