Wearing your pet's ashes in Sebastian: jewelry options
Sebastian has an estimated 10,000 dog- or cat-owning households. When one of those pets dies, a pendant, ring or glass bead lets the whole family carry a pinch of ashes. This is the plain guide to doing it well.

Jewelers, glass artists and online makers near Sebastian
Anyone who keeps a boat in Sebastian knows what salt and humidity do to metal fittings, and outdoor memorials get the same treatment. A slab of granite or slate stands up to it; wood, resin and photo prints don't last long. If you'd like a marker in the garden, raise it slightly on crushed shell so summer rain runs off. Inside, a well-sealed urn keeps the damp out.
Sebastian's riverfront homes and fishing-town character lend themselves to simple, natural memorials: a wooden or ceramic urn, a stone set in the garden, a small frame holding a clay paw print. Many residents are retirees who may move again, so portable keepsakes make sense here. There's no rush; the remains will keep in their plain container for as long as you need.
Living in or near Sebastian often means mail-in makers are the practical choice for anything custom: glass beads, rings, paw print engraving or a memorial diamond. Before you send anything, ask the maker exactly how to pack the ashes, which service to use and how they'll confirm arrival. A good maker will send written instructions and often a prepaid kit.
Sebastian's population is around 27,352, the 97th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Sebastian are based about 38 miles away in Port St. Lucie, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Sebastian often end up using a provider from Roseland (2 miles), Orchid (4 miles) and Micco (5 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
10,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Sebastian has (estimate)
How we calculated this
27,352 ÷ 2.5 = 10,941 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
840
Sebastian families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
10,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 840 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local customs mean for a memorial piece
About 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, so most families here have already met ashes jewelry through a relative, a friend or a funeral home display. That makes a pet pendant feel ordinary rather than strange, and it means local jewelers are more likely to have filled one before. Ask them; you may find the same pieces sold for people are sold for pets, just with a paw print or a different engraving.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Sebastian only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How the local climate affects fit, seals and finish
Long, bright summers around Sebastian are hard on blackened and oxidized detail. The dark fill that makes a paw print stand out on silver can fade faster with sweat and sunscreen through May, June, July, August and September. Ask the maker whether the print is engraved deep enough to hold its oxidation, and whether they'll refresh it if it wears.
Swimming season in Sebastian is long, and the one habit worth building is taking a filled pendant off before the pool or the beach. Chlorine is hard on sterling silver and plated finishes, salt water gets into threads, and sunscreen builds up in engraving. Fused glass and memorial diamonds are fine in water, but the chain and the clasp may not be. Rinse in fresh water and dry fully when you get home.

Budgeting for a pendant, ring or glass piece
The typical sterling silver pet cremation pendant costs about $190[6], based on the middle of three sellers' price points, while fused glass beads with ash list around $245[7] at one US provider. Ask any Sebastian maker what's included: filling, sealing, the chain, engraving and return postage are sometimes separate lines that add up quickly.

What Florida allows with your pet's ashes
Dividing a pet's ashes is entirely legal and very common. Most pieces take less than a teaspoon, so the bigger decision is what happens to the rest. Here's what Florida allows for burial and scattering, and a reminder that if you plan to send ashes to a maker, the postal service's own rules apply on top of anything local.
Not sure which office covers Sebastian? The Florida local government directory is the official list.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Sebastian may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Look at the ashes you have. Most come back gritty and uneven, so for a tiny chamber it helps to pass them through a small sieve or flatten the larger grains gently using a spoon's back.
- Buy or commission the piece. Self-fill pendants arrive in days; glass, resin and rings take weeks; diamonds take months.
- Fill at a calm moment. A clear table, a sheet of paper, the funnel from the kit and no fan or open window.
- Seal the screw. Use the adhesive supplied, wipe any excess and leave it to cure before wearing.
- Tell the people who'll wear the others. Relatives living elsewhere can have theirs posted with tracking, along with a few lines on how to look after it.
- Keep the rest of the ashes safe. Urn, scattering or burial is a decision for another day.
Sharing the memory with family
For many Sebastian families, the right farewell is on the water. A dissolving urn can be released on the lagoon where that's permitted, or offshore beyond the inlet if you follow federal rules on distance. Some keep back a spoonful for a charm or a small glass heart before the boat goes out. Knowing roughly how much ash you'll have helps with dividing it.

Questions people ask
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Sebastian page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Sebastian climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Sebastian?
The closest communities we cover are Roseland (about 2 miles), Orchid (about 4 miles) and Micco (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Sebastian too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Sebastian actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Port St. Lucie, about 38 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Sebastian and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I get matching pieces for family in other cities?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people choose jewelry. Order the whole set from one maker so the pieces match, agree how much ash each gets and decide whether you'll fill them in Sebastian and post them, or send each relative an empty piece plus a small sealed portion. The ashes sharing planner helps with the split.
How long does a memorial diamond take to make?
Much longer than any other piece. One US lab quotes 7–10 months[8] from submission to delivery, a Swiss lab about 12 months[9], and across three providers the average is about 8.5 months[10]. If you want something to wear sooner, many people order a simple pendant first and add the diamond later.
