Star, Idaho
Where Star families get memorial jewelry made
Star's newer homes often have open backyards with room for something permanent: a boulder with an engraved name, a small bench, or a stone set among drought-tolerant plants. If you might sell in a few years, choose something movable. Inside, a simple urn or a shadow box with a collar, a photo and a tag is a lasting way to keep your animal close.
About seven in ten Idaho funerals now involve cremation, so ashes at home are a familiar idea here. Some families scatter a portion along the Boise River or up in the hills beyond the highway; ask the land manager or owner about the exact spot first. A little can be kept in jewelry or a small container so that not everything is released at once.
Getting to a jeweler for ring sizing can mean a drive from Star to a larger centre such as Boise. If you're ordering a ring by mail, ask the maker for a ring sizer, measure at the end of the day when your fingers are slightly larger and check it twice. Sealed rings are hard to resize, so it's worth getting this right first time.
Star's population is around 20,874, the 13th-largest of the 13 Idaho communities we cover. Boise, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Star run from there.
Star sits within easy reach of Eagle (4 miles), Meridian (8 miles, a larger centre) and Caldwell (9 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Star; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
7,700
How many dog- or cat-owning households Star has (estimate)
How we calculated this
20,874 ÷ 2.5 = 8,350 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,700. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
640
Estimated dog and cat losses in Star each year
How we calculated this
7,700 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 640 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

What local customs mean for a memorial piece
In Idaho, about 71.2%[5] of people are cremated, and that shapes how families think about pet ashes too. Relatives rarely question a pendant or a glass bead, and some will want one of their own. If a grandparent or a sibling was close to your pet, ask them early; it's easier to plan the portions before anything is sealed than to reopen an urn later.
The Idaho percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Star, not as a count of pets.
Wearing ash jewelry through Star's seasons
Star swings from summer highs near 92°F to winter lows around 23°F, and your fingers swing with it. A ring with ashes that fits perfectly in January may be tight in July. Measure your ring size in spring or autumn, late in the day, and ask whether a comfort-fit band is available. That one step avoids most fit problems with sealed rings.
If you'll scatter or bury the remaining ashes in Star, the weather tends to set the date: frozen ground in January, February, March, November and December, heavy heat in July and August. Spring and autumn are gentler for gathering outdoors. The jewelry doesn't have to wait for that, though; fill a pendant now and hold the ceremony when the season allows.

Prices by metal, glass and diamond
The headline price is rarely the final one. Chains are often extra: one maker's custom silver print charm is $143 before a silver chain adds about $59 to $79[6]. Gold-plated ash pendants run about $88 to $170[7] at a retailer where solid 14k starts near $1,300. Add filling, engraving and insured shipping, and ask any Star seller for the delivered total, chain included.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Idaho: Idaho costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Idaho allows with your pet's ashes
Wearing ashes is a private choice, and Idaho asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. Below is the Idaho side; a postal carrier's own conditions sit alongside it.
To find your county or city office in Idaho, start with the official Idaho local government directory.
The rules that apply across Idaho (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Idaho page. Star may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Getting a memorial piece made, step by step
- Set a small portion aside. The crematory can bag a teaspoon on its own if you ask, or you can lift one out of the urn at home using a clean spoon, working over a sheet of paper.
- Decide who the pieces are for. Before ordering, find out how many people would like one, so the pieces match and the ash is portioned to suit.
- Choose a material that fits daily life. Sensitive skin does well with steel or titanium; glass can't leak; sterling silver looks traditional; and a diamond is the choice when you want something that lasts.
- Pick local filling or mail-in. A Star jeweler can fill and seal in person; a specialist elsewhere may offer more designs but means mailing ashes.
- Get a written price. Ask the quote to spell out what's covered: fill, seal, chain, engraving and the postage back to you.
- Seal and check. Confirm adhesive has gone on the screw thread, and look it over once more after you've worn it for a week.
Sharing the memory with family
Relatives in Star often live elsewhere in the valley or farther across the West. If more than one person wants to keep something, ask about splitting ashes into several small containers, or ordering duplicate paw or hoof prints. Tree urns are another choice, though the valley's hot summers mean a young tree will need regular deep watering for its first few years.

Questions people ask
Is Star big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,700 Star households keep a dog or cat and around 640 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 20,874), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Does the Star climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Star page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 71.2%[5] of Idaho residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Star actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Boise, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Star and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is gold-plated cremation jewelry worth it?
For occasional wear, often yes. Gold-plated ash pendants cost about $88 to $170 at one US retailer, against $1,298–$4,750[7] for solid 14k gold there. Plating wears through at the edges with daily use, especially with sweat, so for everyday wear, solid gold, sterling or titanium lasts longer. Ask the maker how thick the plating is before you buy.
Can I swim in Star while wearing my ash pendant?
It's better not to. Chlorine and salt water can dull sterling silver and plated finishes, and water can work into a screw thread over time. Fused glass and memorial diamonds are fine in water, but the chain and clasp may not be. Take the piece off before the pool or the sea, and rinse and dry it if it does get wet.
