Aurora, Illinois
Local maker or mail-in: the Aurora picture
Aurora's cold winters mean indoor memorials are often the most practical choice. A small urn on a shelf, a framed paw print, or jewelry holding a little ash keeps your pet close all year. You can always add an outdoor memorial in spring once the ground thaws and you know what feels right. Jewelry and small keepsakes are also easy to share among relatives spread across the Chicago suburbs.
The Fox River runs through the heart of Aurora, and many families find meaning in a memorial that connects to it, such as a river stone engraved with a name or a photo from a favorite riverside spot. If you'd like to scatter ashes by the river, check the local rules first and consider keeping some ashes for an urn at home.
Many Aurora owners start with the crematory that handled their pet. Some sell pendants and charms at the counter, and most will portion out a small amount of ashes for jewelry when asked, which saves you opening the main container later. If the range is small, you can still buy elsewhere and bring the portion to a local jeweler to fill.
Aurora's population is around 181,505, the 2nd-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 37 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Aurora run from there.
Aurora sits within easy reach of Montgomery (3 miles), North Aurora (4 miles) and Oswego (5 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Aurora; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
67,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Aurora has (estimate)
How we calculated this
181,505 ÷ 2.5 = 72,602 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 67,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
5,550
Estimated dog and cat losses in Aurora each year
How we calculated this
67,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 5,550 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Illinois
In Illinois, about 60.2%[5] of people are cremated, so it's normal here to keep ashes at home, scatter them or share them out. A pendant is simply one of those shares. If you're not sure how much to set aside, remember that most pieces take a pinch or a teaspoon at most, so the decision about the rest of the ashes can wait.
For the Illinois figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Aurora rather than as pet data.
Aurora weather, water and your memorial piece
Aurora sees average lows below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, and cold shrinks fingers. A ring that fits in summer can slip off inside a glove in January, when lows average about 16°F. If you're ordering an ash ring, measure your finger at room temperature at the end of the day, and consider a slightly snug fit or a ring guard for winter. A lost sealed ring is much harder to replace than a pendant.
Scarves, thick sweaters and coat zips snag chains, and in Aurora's 5 freezing months you'll be layering more than usual. A short chain that sits under a collar or a pendant with a sturdy bail is easier to live with than a delicate long chain. Check the clasp now and then; winter is when most memorial pendants get tugged off, not summer.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
If a paw print matters more to you than ashes, a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs $143 + chain[6], and paw and nose print pendants at one large retailer start from $99.95[7]. Those can be combined with an ash chamber or worn alongside one. The table shows the rest of the range for Aurora buyers.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Illinois
Wearing ashes is a private choice, and Illinois asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. Below is the Illinois side; a postal carrier's own conditions sit alongside it.

For Illinois's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Illinois guide. Local rules in Aurora can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple order checklist
- Take fur now, from somewhere hidden. Snip a little from the chest or beneath the collar and store it in a named envelope; that clipping keeps resin pieces, and some diamonds, possible later.
- Make a print on a calm day. An engraver needs a crisp image; a pet-safe stamp pad, or a pressing in salt dough, provides one, and failing that, photograph the paw pad against something light-colored.
- Tell your vet what you'd like. Have them record on file that you want individual cremation, the ashes back, and a teaspoon in its own bag, so those questions are already answered when the hardest day comes.
- Browse without buying. Bookmark a few designs that appeal, note the chamber capacity and the metal, and leave anything that would be sealed or dated until later.
- Talk to the family quietly. Ask around about who might like a piece, so that when you request a portion it covers everyone.
- Keep it all in one folder. Fur, prints, the maker's details and the vet's notes together mean the order takes minutes when the time comes.
Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
Many Aurora families plan to stay in their homes for years, which makes a garden memorial appealing: a stone under a tree, a planted bio urn or a small engraved marker. Frost heave can shift stones over winter, so set them on a firm, level base. If you might move, choose something portable or keep a small portion of ashes aside in a keepsake.

Questions people ask
Why does the Aurora page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[5] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Aurora?
The closest communities we cover are Montgomery (about 3 miles), North Aurora (about 4 miles) and Oswego (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Aurora too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How does Aurora's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Aurora, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 37 miles from Aurora) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a jeweler engrave a pendant that's already filled?
Often, as long as the engraving goes on a solid surface away from the sealed thread. Laser engraving produces little heat and doesn't touch the chamber. Hand and rotary engraving put pressure on the piece, so tell the engraver it holds ashes and ask them to check the seal afterwards. Where you can, engrave first and fill second.
Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?
Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
