Champaign, Illinois
Who fills and seals ash jewelry around Champaign
Illinois now cremates about 60 percent of the people who die, and many Champaign families are comfortable keeping an animal's ashes at home for years. Parks and campus grounds each have their own rules on scattering, so check before you plan anything public. Some people wait until they move, then release a small portion somewhere the animal loved, like the backyard of a first house.
A university town tends to favor memorials that are personal rather than grand: a small wooden box on a bookshelf, a pinch of ashes set into a glass bead, or a clay paw impression hung by the door. If you rent, portable is sensible. Before buying an urn, check its capacity against your pet's weight so the ashes fit without spilling into a second container.
Around Champaign, it's common for a pet's ashes to come back months before anyone is ready to think about jewelry, and that's fine. Ashes keep indefinitely in a sealed container. When you are ready, a small portion can be taken from the urn with a clean spoon over a sheet of paper, and nothing about the timing affects the finished piece.
Champaign's population is around 91,195, the 9th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover.

Our estimate
33,500
Champaign: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
91,195 ÷ 2.5 = 36,478 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 33,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,800
dog and cat deaths per year in Champaign, our estimate
How we calculated this
33,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,800 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
In Illinois, about 60.2%[5] of people are cremated, so it's normal here to keep ashes at home, scatter them or share them out. A pendant is simply one of those shares. If you're not sure how much to set aside, remember that most pieces take a pinch or a teaspoon at most, so the decision about the rest of the ashes can wait.
For the Illinois figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Champaign rather than as pet data.
Wearing ash jewelry through Champaign's seasons
If you're mailing ashes to a maker from Champaign in winter, snow and ice can slow deliveries by a day or two. The ashes aren't affected by cold, but tracking matters more when parcels sit in depots. Send early in the week, choose a service with tracking and a signature, and ask the maker to confirm by email the day it arrives.
Champaign sees average lows below freezing in January, February, March and December, and cold shrinks fingers. A ring that fits in summer can slip off inside a glove in January, when lows average about 18°F. If you're ordering an ash ring, measure your finger at room temperature at the end of the day, and consider a slightly snug fit or a ring guard for winter. A lost sealed ring is much harder to replace than a pendant.

What pet cremation jewelry costs for Champaign families
Prices depend far more on the material than on where you live. Across US retailers, a stainless steel ash pendant starts from $19.95[6], sterling silver necklaces run $88–$298[7], and a solid 14k gold pendant costs $1,298–$4,750[8]. That's why entry-level silver is about 4.4 times entry-level steel[9], and entry-level gold about 15 times silver[10]. A Champaign jeweler may charge a little more or less, but these are the ranges to compare against.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Illinois: Illinois costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Illinois
Rules around pet ashes are light compared with human ones. In most places, including Illinois, nobody regulates keeping or wearing them. What's worth checking is the rest of the plan: where you can scatter or bury what's left, and how to send a small portion by post if your maker isn't local. The details below cover the local side.
The official Illinois local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Champaign.
The Illinois page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Champaign's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Ask the child what feels right to them. One child will want a piece to wear, while another prefers a special object kept in a drawer or on a shelf.
- Choose sturdy and simple. Small hands get on better with a keyring, a sealed glass bead or a chunky charm in steel than with a delicate chain.
- Let them make the choices they can. The shape, the color and any wording belong to the child; the filling and the sealing belong to an adult.
- Avoid anything small enough to swallow where young children are concerned, and take long cords off at bedtime.
- Keep a little ash aside for later. A teenager may want a more grown-up piece in a few years.
- Mark the first wearing together. Taking a brief, quiet moment as they put it on helps a child grasp what it stands for.
Remembering your pet, in Champaign and beyond
Families in Champaign are often split between here, Chicago, Indianapolis and much farther away. Dividing ashes into a few very small vessels lets each person take something home after a visit. Printed photo books, framed nose prints and engraved tags also travel well. You can leave the ashes in the container they came in until everyone has time to decide.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Champaign?
The closest communities we cover are Urbana (about 4 miles), Danville (about 35 miles) and Decatur (about 39 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Champaign too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How many pet owners live in Champaign?
By our estimate, about 33,500 households in Champaign have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,800 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 91,195, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How does Champaign's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Champaign, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
How do Illinois attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Illinois human cremation rate at about 60.2%[5]. We show it on the Champaign page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How do I fill a cremation pendant at home?
Work over a sheet of paper on a clear table. Unscrew the chamber, use the small funnel or straw from the kit to add a pinch of ash, tap gently to settle it, then add a drop of the supplied adhesive to the thread and screw it closed. Wipe off any excess and leave it to cure overnight before wearing.
How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?
Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[12], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[13]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.
