Wearing your pet's ashes in Frankfort: jewelry options
Frankfort has an estimated 10,500 dog- or cat-owning households. When one of those pets dies, a pendant, ring or glass bead lets the whole family carry a pinch of ashes. This is the plain guide to doing it well.

Frankfort, Kentucky
Who fills and seals ash jewelry around Frankfort
Some families here want a living memorial: a sugar maple for autumn color, or a bed of daffodils that comes back each spring above a biodegradable urn. Others want something small to keep close, such as a paw impression, a locket with a curl of fur, or a keepsake urn on a desk at work. Clippings and prints must be requested before cremation, while the rest can wait.
History is everywhere in Frankfort, from the capitol dome to the old downtown streets, and many residents gravitate toward memorials with a classic feel: an engraved wooden box, a brass or ceramic urn, a portrait hung with the dates beneath it. Newer homeowners may prefer something modern, like glass art or ash jewelry. Whatever you choose, the ashes can stay in their temporary container until you're ready.
If you live outside Frankfort on a farm or a rural road, mail and parcel pickup can be less predictable, so plan around it. Have the maker ship pieces to a post office box or a workplace if deliveries tend to go astray, and choose tracked, signature services both ways. A memorial piece left on a porch in the rain is a worry nobody needs.
With roughly 28,657 residents, Frankfort is the 14th-largest of the 26 Kentucky communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Frankfort are based about 22 miles away in Lexington, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Georgetown (19 miles), Shelbyville (20 miles) and Lexington (22 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Frankfort too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
10,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Frankfort
How we calculated this
28,657 ÷ 2.5 = 11,463 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
880
dog and cat deaths per year in Frankfort, our estimate
How we calculated this
10,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 880 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Kentucky
About 44.0%[5] of people in Kentucky are cremated, lower than in many places, and older relatives may expect a burial. Some families do both: the ashes are buried with a marker, and a pinch is kept back first for a pendant or two. It gives you a place to visit and something to carry, and it avoids a family disagreement becoming a choice between the two.
The Kentucky figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
How the local climate affects fit, seals and finish
Dry winter air in Frankfort brings static, and static makes fine ashes cling to funnels, spoons and fingers. If you're filling a pendant at home during January, February and December, work over a sheet of paper in a room without a fan or open window, and wipe the funnel with a slightly damp cloth before you start. It helps the ash slide instead of sticking.
Frankfort sees average lows below freezing in January, February and December, and cold shrinks fingers. A ring that fits in summer can slip off inside a glove in January, when lows average about 25°F. If you're ordering an ash ring, measure your finger at room temperature at the end of the day, and consider a slightly snug fit or a ring guard for winter. A lost sealed ring is much harder to replace than a pendant.

What pet cremation jewelry costs for Frankfort families
Memorial diamonds have the widest price range of anything on this page. Some labs advertise stones for as little as $750–$995[6], while a larger lab charges $3,499[7] for 0.25 carat and $15,000 for a full carat[8], roughly $14,000 to $15,000 per carat at any size[9]. For most Frankfort families, a silver or glass piece does the same emotional job for a fraction of that.
We keep the detailed Kentucky price table on one page so it stays current: see Kentucky prices.

What Kentucky allows with your pet's ashes
Dividing a pet's ashes is entirely legal and very common. Most pieces take less than a teaspoon, so the bigger decision is what happens to the rest. Here's what Kentucky allows for burial and scattering, and a reminder that if you plan to send ashes to a maker, the postal service's own rules apply on top of anything local.
The official Kentucky local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Frankfort.
The rules that apply across Kentucky (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Kentucky page. Frankfort may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A simple order checklist
- Look at the ashes you have. They're usually coarse and grainy; a small sieve or a gentle crush with the back of a spoon makes filling easier for tiny chambers.
- Buy or commission the piece. Self-fill pendants arrive in days; glass, resin and rings take weeks; diamonds take months.
- Fill at a calm moment. A clear table, a sheet of paper, the funnel from the kit and no fan or open window.
- Seal the screw. Apply the adhesive that came with it, clean off any that squeezes out, and let it set before wearing.
- Tell the people who'll wear the others. Relatives living elsewhere can have theirs posted with tracking, along with a few lines on how to look after it.
- Keep the rest of the ashes safe. The urn, a scattering or a burial can all come later.
More ways to keep your pet in daily life
With the Kentucky River's limestone all around, a natural stone marker feels at home in a Frankfort garden. Thick stone survives the region's freeze-thaw winters far better than thin cast pieces. Set it slightly below grade on crushed rock so it doesn't frost-heave, and pick a spot that stays dry, since low ground near creeks here can flood after heavy spring storms.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Frankfort?
Usually yes. Georgetown is about 19 miles away, Shelbyville is about 20 miles away and Lexington is about 22 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many pet owners live in Frankfort?
By our estimate, about 10,500 households in Frankfort have at least one dog or cat, and around 880 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 28,657, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Will I have to travel to Lexington to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Lexington (roughly 22 miles from Frankfort) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Kentucky attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Kentucky human cremation rate at about 44.0%[5]. We show it on the Frankfort page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[11], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[12] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?
Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[13], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[14]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.
