Keeping your pet close in Alexandria: pendants, rings and glass
Alexandria has an estimated 16,000 dog- or cat-owning households. When one of those pets dies, a pendant, ring or glass bead lets the whole family carry a pinch of ashes. This is the plain guide to doing it well.

Alexandria, Louisiana
Local maker or mail-in: the Alexandria picture
In central Louisiana's heat and humidity, cheap outdoor memorials fade and crack quickly. Granite or bronze on a firm, level base lasts much longer. Choose a spot on higher ground away from drainage paths, and consider some shade to protect the engraving from the harsh summer sun and to make the place comfortable for a visit with a cold drink on a summer evening.
Some Alexandria families plant a longleaf pine, the tree of the Kisatchie hills, or a flowering shrub in memory of a pet, with a biodegradable urn underneath. Others keep a paw print, a lock of fur or a small keepsake urn on a nightstand. Bring up prints or a clipped curl of fur at the very first call, since those are made before cremation and everything else can wait.
Self-fill kits are popular in towns like Alexandria partly because they're private. Nobody else handles the ashes, and you choose the moment: a quiet evening, a sunny morning, the day before an anniversary. If your hands aren't steady, ask someone in the family to hold the pendant still while you pour.
Alexandria's population is around 42,938, the 10th-largest of the 17 Louisiana communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Lafayette (79 miles, a larger centre), Hemphill (81 miles) and Lake Charles (86 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
16,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Alexandria
How we calculated this
42,938 ÷ 2.5 = 17,175 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,300
dog and cat deaths per year in Alexandria, our estimate
How we calculated this
16,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,300 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Louisiana
About 46.4%[5] of people in Louisiana are cremated, lower than in many places, and older relatives may expect a burial. Some families do both: the ashes are buried with a marker, and a pinch is kept back first for a pendant or two. It gives you a place to visit and something to carry, and it avoids a family disagreement becoming a choice between the two.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Louisiana figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Alexandria tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons, sweat and cold: jewelry care in Alexandria
Long, bright summers around Alexandria are hard on blackened and oxidized detail. The dark fill that makes a paw print stand out on silver can fade faster with sweat and sunscreen through June, July, August and September. Ask the maker whether the print is engraved deep enough to hold its oxidation, and whether they'll refresh it if it wears.
Sweat is the quiet enemy of a screw-top pendant. In the hotter months in Alexandria, especially June, July, August and September, salt and moisture on skin can work their way into the thread over time. Make sure the screw is sealed with the adhesive supplied, wipe the pendant with a soft dry cloth after a hot day and check the closure every few weeks. It's a two-second habit that avoids a lost pinch of ashes.

Budgeting for a pendant, ring or glass piece
Prices depend far more on the material than on where you live. Across US retailers, a stainless steel ash pendant starts from $19.95[6], sterling silver necklaces run $88–$298[7], and a solid 14k gold pendant costs $1,298–$4,750[8]. That's why entry-level silver is about 4.4 times entry-level steel[9], and entry-level gold about 15 times silver[10]. An Alexandria jeweler may charge a little more or less, but these are the ranges to compare against.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Louisiana: Louisiana costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Louisiana allows with your pet's ashes
Wearing ashes is a private choice, and Louisiana asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. Below is the Louisiana side; a postal carrier's own conditions sit alongside it.

Start with the Louisiana rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Alexandria's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A calm plan for getting the piece made
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. Staff can usually clip fur and take a paw print while your pet is still there; once the body goes for cremation, that chance has passed.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, and without ashes a filled pendant isn't possible.
- Write a note on the form asking for about a teaspoon in its own small bag, labeled with your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. By our estimate, ashes are usually back with you in 3 to 14 days[12], and no jewelry decision has to be made before they arrive.
- Start with one simple piece. A self-fill steel or silver pendant is plenty at first; custom work can follow once you know what you want to wear.
- Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Many people find the moment easier with a partner or friend at the table.
Sharing the memory with family
Churches and old homes give Alexandria's older neighborhoods a traditional feel, and many families lean toward classic pieces: a polished hardwood urn, a photo in a silver frame with the dates, an engraved garden stone. Others prefer something modern, like cremation jewelry or glass art with a swirl of ashes inside. Take your time; the ashes will keep safely until you've decided.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Alexandria?
The closest communities we cover are Lafayette (about 79 miles), Hemphill (about 81 miles) and Lake Charles (about 86 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Alexandria too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is Alexandria big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 16,000 Alexandria households keep a dog or cat and around 1,300 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 42,938), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How does Alexandria's weather affect pet aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Alexandria, with average highs around 92°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Why does the Alexandria page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.4%[5] of Louisiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I get matching pieces for family in other cities?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people choose jewelry. Order the whole set from one maker so the pieces match, agree how much ash each gets and decide whether you'll fill them in Alexandria and post them, or send each relative an empty piece plus a small sealed portion. The ashes sharing planner helps with the split.
Can I swim in Alexandria while wearing my ash pendant?
It's better not to. Chlorine and salt water can dull sterling silver and plated finishes, and water can work into a screw thread over time. Fused glass and memorial diamonds are fine in water, but the chain and clasp may not be. Take the piece off before the pool or the sea, and rinse and dry it if it does get wet.
