Where Traverse City families get memorial jewelry made
Up here, a garden marker has to survive months under snow, spring meltwater, and frost that reaches deep into the ground. Granite and bronze are the materials that last; bed them on several inches of crushed stone so they don't heave, and keep them clear of the path where the plow or snowblower throws snow. Choose lettering cut deep enough to read after decades of northern weather.
Traverse City families often choose memorials tied to the landscape: an urn turned from local cherry wood, a smooth stone from the bay shore with a name carved in, or a glass keepsake tinted the blue-green of Grand Traverse Bay. Others keep it simple with a ceramic urn on the mantel. Many people hold the ashes in the provider's container through the winter and choose something once the snow melts.
If you live outside Traverse City on a farm or a rural road, mail and parcel pickup can be less predictable, so plan around it. Have the maker ship pieces to a post office box or a workplace if deliveries tend to go astray, and choose tracked, signature services both ways. A memorial piece left on a porch in the rain is a worry nobody needs.
Traverse City is home to about 15,832 people, the 58th-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover.
Traverse City sits within easy reach of Charlevoix (42 miles), Petoskey (53 miles) and Mount Pleasant (91 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Traverse City; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
5,850
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Traverse City
How we calculated this
15,832 ÷ 2.5 = 6,333 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 5,850. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
490
Traverse City families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
5,850 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 490 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

How Michigan feels about cremation, and what that means for jewelry
In Michigan, about 69.5%[5] of people are cremated, so it's normal here to keep ashes at home, scatter them or share them out. A pendant is simply one of those shares. If you're not sure how much to set aside, remember that most pieces take a pinch or a teaspoon at most, so the decision about the rest of the ashes can wait.
That Michigan rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Traverse City only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, sweat and cold: jewelry care in Traverse City
Dry indoor heating during Traverse City's winter is actually kind to sterling, because tarnish slows when the air is dry. That makes it a sensible season to order silver and fill a pendant at home: ash doesn't clump in low humidity, though a damp cloth on the funnel helps with static. Only rings and glass need extra winter care.
Thick gloves and cold fingers in February make tiny clasps fiddly. If you'll wear a pendant daily through Traverse City's winter, ask for a lobster clasp big enough to open with numb hands, or a slide-on pendant that never needs taking off its chain. It sounds minor until a filled piece drops into snow.

How much to budget for a memorial piece
Memorial diamonds have the widest price range of anything on this page. Some labs advertise stones for as little as $750–$995[6], while a larger lab charges $3,499[7] for 0.25 carat and $15,000 for a full carat[8], roughly $14,000 to $15,000 per carat at any size[9]. For most Traverse City families, a silver or glass piece does the same emotional job for a fraction of that.
The full price table by product is on our Michigan page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you divide the ashes: Michigan basics
Before you split the ashes, it helps to know what you'll do with the part that won't go into jewelry, because that's where Michigan's rules come in. Scattering on land you don't own, burying in a shared garden and releasing ashes into water can each carry conditions. The piece you wear carries none.
To find your county or city office in Michigan, start with the official Michigan local government directory.
We keep Michigan's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Michigan rules summary. Before a home burial in Traverse City, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A simple order checklist
- Ask the child what feels right to them. One child will want a piece to wear, while another prefers a special object kept in a drawer or on a shelf.
- Choose sturdy and simple. A sealed glass bead, a chunky steel charm or a keyring suits small hands better than a fine chain.
- Let them make the choices they can. The shape, the color and any wording belong to the child; the filling and the sealing belong to an adult.
- Avoid anything small enough to swallow for young children, and take off long cords at bedtime.
- Keep a little ash aside for later. A teenager may want a more grown-up piece in a few years.
- Mark the first wearing together. A short, quiet moment helps a child understand what the piece means.
Other ways to remember your pet in Traverse City
In a region built on orchards, some families plant a young cherry tree, a paper birch or a white pine over a plantable urn, so the loss turns into something that grows and blossoms. Others keep a pinch in a pendant and place the rest on family land up the peninsula. Paw prints in clay and saved fur need to be requested on the first call, while there's still time.

Questions people ask
Why does the Traverse City page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 69.5%[5] of Michigan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Traverse City each year?
Our estimate is around 490. It comes from Traverse City's population (about 15,832), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 5,850 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Traverse City?
Usually yes. Charlevoix is about 42 miles away, Petoskey is about 53 miles away and Mount Pleasant is about 91 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Traverse City climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 81°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Is gold-plated cremation jewelry worth it?
For occasional wear, often yes. Gold-plated ash pendants cost about $88 to $170 at one US retailer, against $1,298–$4,750[11] for solid 14k gold there. Plating wears through at the edges with daily use, especially with sweat, so for everyday wear, solid gold, sterling or titanium lasts longer. Ask the maker how thick the plating is before you buy.
How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?
Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[12], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[13]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.
