Taos, New Mexico
Where Taos families get memorial jewelry made
The Rio Grande Gorge, the mountain trails and the sage mesa are places people here feel deeply about, and some choose to scatter a small amount of ashes where they once walked with their animal. Public land and pueblo land have different rules, and Taos Pueblo is sovereign land, so check who manages a spot and ask permission rather than assume.
High-altitude sun and freeze-thaw cycles are tough on outdoor pieces in Taos. Stone set flush with the ground or a bronze plaque tends to outlast painted wood or thin resin. If you want something inside instead, a keepsake that sits by the woodstove or on a nicho in an adobe wall keeps your pet near without worrying about the weather.
Craft fairs and weekend markets around Taos sometimes have silversmiths or glassworkers who'll take a memorial commission. Before handing anything over, ask how they'll store the ashes until the work is done, whether unused ash comes back and how they'll let you know it's ready. A short written note of what was agreed protects you both.
Taos is home to about 6,526 people, the 11th-largest of the 11 New Mexico communities we cover.
Taos sits within easy reach of Santa Fe (54 miles, a larger centre), Rio Rancho (100 miles, a larger centre) and Albuquerque (108 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Taos; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
2,400
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Taos
How we calculated this
6,526 ÷ 2.5 = 2,610 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 2,400. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
200
dog and cat deaths per year in Taos, our estimate
How we calculated this
2,400 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What local customs mean for a memorial piece
Where roughly 70.5%[5] of the population of New Mexico ends up cremated, many homes already have an urn on a shelf, sometimes more than one. That familiarity means a pet's ashes don't feel unusual in the house, and jewelry becomes a way to take a little of them out into the day. Some people wear a piece for a relative and another for a pet on the same chain.
For the New Mexico figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Taos rather than as pet data.
Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Taos
Without local climate figures for Taos, one tip covers every season: photograph your piece and its engraving the day it arrives, front and back, in good light. If it's ever damaged or lost, a clear photo helps a jeweler repair or remake it faithfully, and it helps with an insurance claim too.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
Most pet cremation jewelry in the US costs $30–$300+[6] (per one large retailer), and the table below shows where each material sits. Memorial diamonds are in a different league: a quarter-carat stone is listed at $3,499[7] by one of the larger US labs, about 27 times a typical sterling pendant[8]. If you're in Taos and weighing a diamond against a set of silver pieces for the whole family, that ratio is worth keeping in mind.

Mailing, dividing and scattering: the rules in New Mexico
Dividing a pet's ashes is entirely legal and very common. Most pieces take less than a teaspoon, so the bigger decision is what happens to the rest. Here's what New Mexico allows for burial and scattering, and a reminder that if you plan to send ashes to a maker, the postal service's own rules apply on top of anything local.
The rules that apply across New Mexico (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our New Mexico page. Taos may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A simple order checklist
- Call your vet or an aftercare provider first. Collection, and when it happens, is what they'll explain; the jewelry can be thought about afterwards.
- If you can, keep a lock of fur. Before collection, a small snip from under the chin or the ruff, placed in a paper envelope, is all a resin piece needs.
- Press a paw into something soft such as modelling clay, or use washable ink, if either is nearby. If that feels beyond you right now, leave it; the vet or crematory can often take one instead.
- Say when you book that you want ashes back, and ask for a little to be bagged apart for jewelry.
- Give yourself a few weeks. Deciding is harder while you're in shock, and a piece picked out a month from now will mean just as much.
- When you're ready, compare two routes: a jeweler near Taos for a same-day fill, or a specialist studio for a custom design.
Sharing the memory with family
Taos has been an art town for over a century, and many families here commission something personal for a pet: a small painting, a hand-thrown ceramic vessel or a carved wooden box. Local craft traditions make that easy to picture. If you go this route, ask the maker about the inner volume, a sealed lining and whether the piece can safely sit on a sunny windowsill.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in New Mexico?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of New Mexico deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Taos follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How many pet owners live in Taos?
By our estimate, about 2,400 households in Taos have at least one dog or cat, and around 200 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 6,526, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Taos?
The closest communities we cover are Santa Fe (about 54 miles), Rio Rancho (about 100 miles) and Albuquerque (about 108 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Taos too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Do I need the cremation certificate to order ash jewelry?
Usually not for a pendant you fill yourself or have filled locally. Some mail-in makers and most memorial-diamond labs ask for it, or for a signed form, to confirm what they're receiving and whose ashes they are. Keep it with the urn; it's also useful if you ever carry ashes on a flight or across a border.
Can I mail my pet's ashes to a jewelry maker from Taos?
Yes. In the US, the Postal Service is the carrier that accepts cremated remains, and it requires Priority Mail Express with its dedicated cremated remains label on the box. Seal the ashes in a small bag, cushion it inside a sturdy box and keep the tracking number. Most private couriers won't knowingly carry ashes, so check with the maker before using one. Many makers send a prepaid kit.
How do I get a small portion out of a sealed urn in Taos?
Many urns open from the base, with screws or a sliding panel under a felt pad. Inside there's usually a plastic bag with a twist tie. Open it over a tray, lift out a spoonful with a dry teaspoon, then retie the bag and close the urn. If the urn is glued, or you'd rather not do it, the crematory that returned the ashes or a Taos jeweler can usually help.
