Where Cincinnati families get memorial jewelry made
Cincinnati has a long tradition of garden-style cemeteries and a strong German and Irish heritage, and many families like a memorial they can visit. For a pet, that might be an engraved stone under a tree, a memorial garden bed or a tree planted with a biodegradable urn. Choose natural stone or metal that handles freeze-thaw winters. Placing it where you'll see it often keeps it close.
Cincinnati's parks and river views are places many families link with their pets, from Eden Park and Mount Airy Forest to the riverfront parks along the Ohio. Some families leave a little of the ashes at an overlook and keep the remainder at home. Check park rules first, and consider a quiet overlook where you can return on the anniversary. A spoonful or two is plenty for that.
In Cincinnati, it's often possible to get the whole thing done in a single afternoon: pick up the ashes, buy a sterling or steel pendant from a local jeweler, have them fill and seal it at the counter and walk out wearing it. Custom pieces take longer, but for many people that same-day option is exactly what they need in the first week.
Cincinnati is home to about 314,367 people, the 3rd-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Covington (1 miles), Norwood (5 miles) and Erlanger (6 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Cincinnati routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
115,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Cincinnati has (estimate)
How we calculated this
314,367 ÷ 2.5 = 125,747 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 115,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
9,650
dog and cat deaths per year in Cincinnati, our estimate
How we calculated this
115,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 9,650 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
With a cremation share near 59.1%[5] in Ohio, memorial jewelry is available, if not in every shop window. Crematory counters and online makers carry the widest ranges. A useful test for any local jeweler is to ask which adhesive they use on the thread; a confident, specific answer is a good sign they've done this before.
For the Ohio figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Cincinnati rather than as pet data.
Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Cincinnati
Scarves, thick sweaters and coat zips snag chains, and in Cincinnati's 3 freezing months you'll be layering more than usual. A short chain that sits under a collar or a pendant with a sturdy bail is easier to live with than a delicate long chain. Check the clasp now and then; winter is when most memorial pendants get tugged off, not summer.
Cincinnati sees average lows below freezing in January, February and December, and cold shrinks fingers. A ring that fits in summer can slip off inside a glove in January, when lows average about 24°F. If you're ordering an ash ring, measure your finger at room temperature at the end of the day, and consider a slightly snug fit or a ring guard for winter. A lost sealed ring is much harder to replace than a pendant.

Prices by metal, glass and diamond
Most pet cremation jewelry in the US costs $30–$300+[6] (per one large retailer), and the table below shows where each material sits. Memorial diamonds are in a different league: a quarter-carat stone is listed at $3,499[7] by one of the larger US labs, about 27 times a typical sterling pendant[8]. If you're in Cincinnati and weighing a diamond against a set of silver pieces for the whole family, that ratio is worth keeping in mind.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Ohio
If you rent or share a building in Ohio, a pendant raises no issues at all, but burying the rest of the ashes in a shared garden might. Landlords, homeowners' associations and park authorities can set conditions of their own. The notes below give Ohio's general position; check with whoever controls the land before scattering or burying what's left.
For what Cincinnati itself says, see City of Cincinnati 311. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately. To find your county or city office in Ohio, start with the official Ohio local government directory.
The Ohio page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Cincinnati's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Getting a memorial piece made, step by step
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. Staff can usually clip fur and take a paw print while your pet is still there; once the body goes for cremation, that chance has passed.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. With communal cremation no ashes come back to you, and a pendant can't be filled with ashes you don't have.
- Write a note on the form requesting roughly a teaspoon set apart in a little bag that carries your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. Ashes usually come home within 3 to 14 days, by our estimate[10], and nothing about jewelry needs deciding before then.
- Start with one simple piece. A self-fill steel or silver pendant is plenty at first; custom work can follow once you know what you want to wear.
- Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Many people find the moment easier with a partner or friend at the table.
More ways to keep your pet in daily life
Many Cincinnati families keep a pet's ashes at home in an urn, share them in keepsake containers, or choose jewelry holding a pinch of ashes. Paw print plaques and engraved garden markers are other familiar choices. If you'd like a paw print or fur clipping, ask before cremation, since it has to be taken first. A small keepsake also travels well if you move.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Ohio?
For people, yes: about 59.1%[5] of Ohio deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Cincinnati follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Cincinnati climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How many pet owners live in Cincinnati?
By our estimate, about 115,000 households in Cincinnati have at least one dog or cat, and around 9,650 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 314,367, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cincinnati?
Usually yes. Covington is about 1 miles away, Norwood is about 5 miles away and Erlanger is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How long does a memorial diamond take to make?
Much longer than any other piece. One US lab quotes 7–10 months[11] from submission to delivery, a Swiss lab about 12 months[12], and across three providers the average is about 8.5 months[9]. If you want something to wear sooner, many people order a simple pendant first and add the diamond later.
Can glass ash jewelry crack in cold weather?
Rarely, but sudden temperature change is the risk. A glass pendant that's been out in Cincinnati's cold and then goes straight under hot water can crack. Let it come to room temperature first. The more common cause of damage in winter is a fall on ice or a drop onto a hard floor, so tuck it under a layer on slippery days.
