How Massillon owners get a memorial piece made
Massillon has deep roots in steel, the canal and Friday night football, and some families like a memorial that feels just as sturdy: a granite marker, a cast bronze plaque or a heavy stoneware urn. Others lean toward something small and personal, like a locket or a paw print framed beside a school photo. There's no deadline, so let the choice wait until the first rush of grief passes.
Stark County winters bring repeated freezes and thaws that heave poorly set garden stones and flake cheap cement. An outdoor marker lasts better in granite or bronze, set level on compacted gravel. If your yard sits low near the Tuscarawas, choose a higher spot that stays dry in spring. Ceramic, wood and glass urns belong indoors, where temperature swings won't crack a glaze or loosen a seal.
If the closest jeweler is a drive away in Cleveland or another bigger centre, combine the visit with something else: a ring sizing, a chain repair or a trip to see family. Bring the portion of ashes in a small sealed bag inside a box, labeled with your pet's name, and ask for it to be filled and sealed while you're there.
About 32,168 people live in Massillon, which makes it the 46th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Cleveland, about 50 miles (81 km) away, which is where some providers serving Massillon are based.
Families in Massillon often end up using a provider from Canton (8 miles, a larger centre), North Canton (9 miles) and Green (12 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
12,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Massillon has (estimate)
How we calculated this
32,168 ÷ 2.5 = 12,867 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
990
Massillon families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
12,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 990 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

How Ohio feels about cremation, and what that means for jewelry
About 59.1%[5] of people in Ohio are cremated, up steadily over the years, so ashes are familiar to most families but still new to some. That mix shows up in jewelry too. Younger relatives may be keen on a pendant; older ones may prefer something without ashes, such as a paw print charm or a fur inclusion. Both are good memorials, and one family can easily have both.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Ohio figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Massillon tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Massillon
Dry indoor heating during Massillon's winter is actually kind to sterling, because tarnish slows when the air is dry. That makes it a sensible season to order silver and fill a pendant at home: ash doesn't clump in low humidity, though a damp cloth on the funnel helps with static. Only rings and glass need extra winter care.
Scarves, thick sweaters and coat zips snag chains, and in Massillon's 4 freezing months you'll be layering more than usual. A short chain that sits under a collar or a pendant with a sturdy bail is easier to live with than a delicate long chain. Check the clasp now and then; winter is when most memorial pendants get tugged off, not summer.

How much to budget for a memorial piece
Prices depend far more on the material than on where you live. Across US retailers, a stainless steel ash pendant starts from $19.95[6], sterling silver necklaces run $88–$298[7], and a solid 14k gold pendant costs $1,298–$4,750[8]. That's why entry-level silver is about 4.4 times entry-level steel[9], and entry-level gold about 15 times silver[10]. A Massillon jeweler may charge a little more or less, but these are the ranges to compare against.

What Ohio allows with your pet's ashes
Pet ashes are handled very differently from human remains in most places, Ohio included. There's no register, no permit to divide them and no limit on how many pieces you make. Rules only return when ashes leave your home, whether onto public land, into water or into the mail. Here's what applies locally.
Ohio keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Massillon.
The rules that apply across Ohio (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Ohio page. Massillon may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A calm plan for getting the piece made
- Call the crematory or your vet to find out if they stock jewelry, will set a portion of ashes aside for it, or can point you to a nearby jeweler who does fills.
- Compare two or three options near Massillon: a jeweler in town, the crematory's own counter, and an online studio that specializes in ash pieces.
- Check allergies and sizing with each person who'll receive one.
- Decide on engraving. The name, the dates, a paw print, or plain metal; either way, sign off the text and proof by email or on paper.
- Arrange the ashes. You can deliver them by hand, do the filling at home, or post them using a tracked, signed-for service that the maker has okayed.
- Wear it and check it. Every few weeks give the seal and clasp a quick look, and remove it before swimming or gardening.
- Store it safely at night in a soft pouch, away from perfume, heat and hard surfaces.
Other ways to remember your pet in Massillon
Splitting ashes is common among Massillon families with grown children living elsewhere in Ohio or out of state. One portion might stay in a keepsake urn on the mantel, another could go into a small pendant, and the rest might be planted with a lilac or a redbud in the yard. Order a few extra mini containers at the time you book the cremation, so each person receives a sealed share rather than an envelope.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Massillon?
Usually yes. Canton is about 8 miles away, North Canton is about 9 miles away and Green is about 12 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Massillon climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How do Ohio attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Ohio human cremation rate at about 59.1%[5]. We show it on the Massillon page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Cleveland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Cleveland (roughly 50 miles from Massillon) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is gold-plated cremation jewelry worth it?
For occasional wear, often yes. Gold-plated ash pendants cost about $88 to $170 at one US retailer, against $1,298–$4,750[8] for solid 14k gold there. Plating wears through at the edges with daily use, especially with sweat, so for everyday wear, solid gold, sterling or titanium lasts longer. Ask the maker how thick the plating is before you buy.
Can I use my pet's fur instead of ashes?
Yes. Fur can't go into molten glass, but it sets well in resin, where you can still see its color. Some memorial-diamond labs can also work from fur; one Swiss lab needs about 5 g[12]. Fur has to be clipped before cremation, so if your pet is still with you, it's worth taking a little from a hidden spot now.
