Keeping your pet close in Knoxville: pendants, rings and glass
Knoxville has an estimated 74,500 dog- or cat-owning households. When one of those pets dies, a pendant, ring or glass bead lets the whole family carry a pinch of ashes. This is the plain guide to doing it well.

Where Knoxville families get memorial jewelry made
East Tennessee has a long tradition of family burial plots and handmade markers, and many Knoxville owners carry that into how they remember a pet. A carved stone, a wooden marker, or a small urn kept at home until it can be buried on family land are all common choices. If you plan to bury ashes later, a durable, sealed urn will hold up better in the region's wet, clay-heavy soil.
Knoxville's craft tradition runs deep, with potters, woodworkers and artists across the region, so handmade urns and memorial pieces are easy to find in style if not by name. A thrown pottery urn, a turned wooden box or a hand-forged keepsake can feel very personal. If you'd prefer something wearable, jewelry holding a small amount of ashes is another option, and it can be ordered after the main urn is chosen.
For Knoxville families buying pieces for relatives in other towns, it helps to think about sizing and allergies before the order goes in. Ask each person which metal they wear without trouble, measure ring sizes rather than guessing and agree how long a chain they'd like. Returning a sealed, filled piece because it doesn't fit is awkward for everyone, and some makers can't reopen a sealed chamber.
With roughly 202,021 residents, Knoxville is the 3rd-largest of the 35 Tennessee communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Maryville (15 miles), Farragut (16 miles) and Sevierville (20 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Knoxville routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
74,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Knoxville
How we calculated this
202,021 ÷ 2.5 = 80,808 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 74,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
6,200
Knoxville families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
74,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 6,200 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation habits in Tennessee
With cremation at about 48.9%[5] in Tennessee, pet crematories can be further apart, and the drive to one may be long. Ask your vet which crematory they use and whether it can post a pendant or keepsake back together with the ashes. Doing it in one delivery saves a second trip or a second parcel.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Tennessee figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Knoxville tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Knoxville weather, water and your memorial piece
If you'll scatter or bury the remaining ashes in Knoxville, the weather tends to set the date: frozen ground in January, February and December, heavy heat in June, July and August. Spring and autumn are gentler for gathering outdoors. The jewelry doesn't have to wait for that, though; fill a pendant now and hold the ceremony when the season allows.
In Knoxville, summer brings sweat and swimming, winter brings scarves and static. Seal any screw-top pendant with adhesive so neither season works it loose, take pieces off for the pool in June, July and August, and tuck a chain under your coat in January, February and December. Most pendants that go wrong do so from wear and tear, not from a faulty chamber.

Prices by metal, glass and diamond
Prices depend far more on the material than on where you live. Across US retailers, a stainless steel ash pendant starts from $19.95[6], sterling silver necklaces run $88–$298[7], and a solid 14k gold pendant costs $1,298–$4,750[8]. That's why entry-level silver is about 4.4 times entry-level steel[9], and entry-level gold about 15 times silver[10]. A Knoxville jeweler may charge a little more or less, but these are the ranges to compare against.

Before you divide the ashes: Tennessee basics
Dividing a pet's ashes is entirely legal and very common. Most pieces take less than a teaspoon, so the bigger decision is what happens to the rest. Here's what Tennessee allows for burial and scattering, and a reminder that if you plan to send ashes to a maker, the postal service's own rules apply on top of anything local.
The official Tennessee local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Knoxville.
The rules that apply across Tennessee (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Tennessee page. Knoxville may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Getting a memorial piece made, step by step
- Wait until you're ready. Ashes keep indefinitely, and there's no deadline for jewelry.
- Collect prints and fur early if you can. Paw prints, nose prints and fur can only be taken before cremation, and they open up more options later.
- Measure carefully. Ring size at the end of the day, chain length against your collarbone, and ask each relative about metal allergies.
- Ask the maker how they handle ashes. How much they need, how they label it, whether they return what they don't use.
- If you mail ashes, pack them properly. Seal them in a small bag, cushion it inside a sturdy box and use the service the maker names, with tracking.
- Approve a proof of the engraving, especially a paw or nose print, and only then let the maker start.
Other ways to remember your pet in Knoxville
The Great Smoky Mountains are about an hour away, and many Knoxville residents feel a deep connection to them. If you're thinking of scattering ashes in a park or forest, check the managing agency's rules first, since national parks and other public lands have their own requirements. A memorial tree planted at home, or a stone overlooking a garden view of the ridges, can create a lasting place to remember without restrictions.

Questions people ask
How does Knoxville's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Knoxville, with average highs around 88°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Is Knoxville big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 74,500 Knoxville households keep a dog or cat and around 6,200 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 202,021), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Knoxville?
The closest communities we cover are Maryville (about 15 miles), Farragut (about 16 miles) and Sevierville (about 20 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Knoxville too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Tennessee attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Tennessee human cremation rate at about 48.9%[5]. We show it on the Knoxville page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What if my memorial pendant breaks or I lose it?
If it breaks, stop wearing it and put it in a small sealed bag straight away so no ash is lost. A jeweler can often replace a bail or clasp without opening the chamber. For peace of mind, keep a little spare ash in the urn so a replacement can be filled, and ask whether your home insurance covers jewelry.
How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?
Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[12], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[13]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.
