Keeping your pet close in Anacortes: pendants, rings and glass
Anacortes has an estimated 6,650 dog- or cat-owning households. When one of those pets dies, a pendant, ring or glass bead lets the whole family carry a pinch of ashes. This is the plain guide to doing it well.

Anacortes, Washington
Local maker or mail-in: the Anacortes picture
Many Anacortes households choose tributes that look toward the water: a cedar box on a windowsill facing Guemes Channel, a stone in a garden overlooking the islands, or a bench on their own land where evening light hits the Strait. Others favor a ring, pendant or pocket-sized photo, easy to carry along on a ferry trip or a sailing weekend.
Salt wind and steady rain punish outdoor memorials on Fidalgo Island. Granite, basalt and bronze outlast decades here, while softwood and painted metal wear quickly. Seat a garden stone on a thin layer of crushed rock for drainage, and favor a sheltered corner if your lot faces open water. Fragile items, like a nose impression or saved whiskers, belong indoors, perhaps in a small frame near the door.
Around Anacortes, it's common for a pet's ashes to come back months before anyone is ready to think about jewelry, and that's fine. Ashes keep indefinitely in a sealed container. When you are ready, a small portion can be taken from the urn with a clean spoon over a sheet of paper, and nothing about the timing affects the finished piece.
About 18,080 people live in Anacortes, which makes it the 63rd-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Anacortes are based about 63 miles away in Seattle, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Oak Harbor (13 miles), Mount Vernon (15 miles) and Bellingham (19 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Anacortes as well.
Our estimate
6,650
Anacortes: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
18,080 ÷ 2.5 = 7,232 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,650. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
550
Anacortes families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
6,650 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 550 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
With about 79.1%[5] of people in Washington choosing cremation, the local market for memorial products is well developed, and that includes jewelry. You'll likely find crematories and funeral suppliers with a range of pendants and rings, sometimes the very same designs they offer for people. Use that familiarity: staff can usually tell you which closures hold up and which come back loose.
We take the Washington rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Anacortes, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Anacortes
A mild, often damp climate like Anacortes's is easy on resin but less forgiving of thin plating, which can wear through at the edges after a year or two of daily wear. For a piece you'll never take off, solid sterling, gold or titanium outlasts gold-plated brass, even though it costs more at the start.
Because Anacortes rarely gets extreme, many people here wear a memorial piece every day, year-round. That's the kind of wear that tests a closure. Make sure the screw on a pendant is sealed, check it every few weeks and have a jeweler look at the bail and chain once a year. It's the everyday tug of a chain, not the weather, that causes most problems.

How much to budget for a memorial piece
Memorial diamonds have the widest price range of anything on this page. Some labs advertise stones for as little as $750–$995[6], while a larger lab charges $3,499[7] for 0.25 carat and $15,000 for a full carat[8], roughly $14,000 to $15,000 per carat at any size[9]. For most Anacortes families, a silver or glass piece does the same emotional job for a fraction of that.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Washington: Washington costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Washington
There are very few rules about what you do with a pet's ashes. Keeping them at home, dividing them between family members and sealing a pinch in a pendant are all yours to decide. Where rules do come in is scattering the rest, burying them and sending them by post, which is why it's worth knowing the basics for Washington before you decide what happens to the ashes that don't go into jewelry.
To find your county or city office in Washington, start with the official Washington local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Washington level first; our Washington rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Anacortes or your HOA adds anything.
A calm plan for getting the piece made
- Wait until you're ready. Ashes keep indefinitely, and there's no deadline for jewelry.
- Collect prints and fur early if you can. Paw prints, nose prints and fur can only be taken before cremation, and they open up more options later.
- Measure carefully. Size a ring late in the day, hold a chain to your collarbone to judge length, and check with each relative about metals that irritate their skin.
- Ask the maker how they handle ashes. How much they need, how they label it, whether they return what they don't use.
- If you mail ashes, pack them properly. Put them in a sealed bag first, pad that bag inside a strong box, and send it by the tracked carrier the maker tells you to use.
- Approve a proof for any engraving, especially paw or nose prints, before the piece is made.
More ways to keep your pet in daily life
Some Anacortes families honor an animal with a ferry ride to the San Juans on its birthday, a photograph taken at Washington Park as the sun sinks behind Lopez and Decatur, or a young shore pine planted in the yard. Reserving a portion of the ashes before anything is scattered leaves room for all of those ideas later on, including ones nobody has thought of yet.

Questions people ask
How do Washington attitudes to cremation compare?
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) puts the Washington human cremation rate at about 79.1%[5]. We show it on the Anacortes page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is Anacortes big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 6,650 Anacortes households keep a dog or cat and around 550 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 18,080), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Anacortes?
The closest communities we cover are Oak Harbor (about 13 miles), Mount Vernon (about 15 miles) and Bellingham (about 19 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Anacortes too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Anacortes actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Seattle, about 63 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Anacortes and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[11], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[12] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
Do I need the cremation certificate to order ash jewelry?
Usually not for a pendant you fill yourself or have filled locally. Some mail-in makers and most memorial-diamond labs ask for it, or for a signed form, to confirm what they're receiving and whose ashes they are. Keep it with the urn; it's also useful if you ever carry ashes on a flight or across a border.
