Wearing your pet's ashes in Vancouver: jewelry options
By our estimate, about 73,500 households in Vancouver share their home with a dog or cat, and roughly 6,100 of those pets die each year. A small wearable piece is one of the quieter ways people there keep them close.

Vancouver, Washington
Local maker or mail-in: the Vancouver picture
Many Vancouver homes have gardens, and the mild, wet climate is ideal for memorial plantings. A dogwood, maple or native shrub planted over a biodegradable urn will grow well here with little effort. If you'd prefer a stone, choose one that handles moss and constant moisture. Indoors, an urn or framed paw print on a shelf remains the most common choice for families who might move later.
The Pacific Northwest has a strong interest in eco-friendly choices, and many Vancouver owners look for memorials that fit that outlook: biodegradable urns, tree plantings, recycled or natural materials. If that matters to you, ask about options when you arrange the cremation. Jewelry holding a trace of ashes and small wooden or ceramic urns are also popular with people who prefer something simple and understated.
Glass memorial pieces are harder to find locally in a city like Vancouver, because they need a studio with a kiln and someone who works in fused or lampworked glass. It's worth checking whether a craft studio or art glass gallery nearby takes commissions. If not, the specialist studios that do this by mail are well established, and a larger centre such as Portland may have a hot shop that's a reasonable drive away.
Vancouver's population is around 199,698, the 4th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Portland, roughly 9 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Vancouver run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Camas (8 miles), Portland (9 miles, a larger centre) and Battle Ground (10 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Vancouver routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
73,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Vancouver
How we calculated this
199,698 ÷ 2.5 = 79,879 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 73,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
6,100
Estimated dog and cat losses in Vancouver each year
How we calculated this
73,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 6,100 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation habits in Washington
Cremation covers about 79.1%[5] of human deaths in Washington, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[6] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.

Timing fittings and ceremonies around Vancouver's weather
A mild, often damp climate like Vancouver's is easy on resin but less forgiving of thin plating, which can wear through at the edges after a year or two of daily wear. For a piece you'll never take off, solid sterling, gold or titanium outlasts gold-plated brass, even though it costs more at the start.
With no harsh season to plan around, the best time in Vancouver for scattering or planting with the remaining ashes is simply when the family can gather. Many people wear their new pendant for the first time that day. December is the month most likely to bring rain, so have a covered fallback if you choose it.

Memorial jewelry prices Vancouver buyers can check
Memorial diamonds have the widest price range of anything on this page. Some labs advertise stones for as little as $750–$995[7], while a larger lab charges $3,499[8] for 0.25 carat and $15,000 for a full carat[9], roughly $14,000 to $15,000 per carat at any size[10]. For most Vancouver families, a silver or glass piece does the same emotional job for a fraction of that.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Washington
Filling a memorial pendant isn't a regulated job in most places, Washington included, so ask a jeweler or crematory how they store and label a portion rather than assuming a rule covers it. A sealed bag with your pet's name on it, kept apart from other work, is a fair expectation. The public rules that do exist concern burial and scattering, summarized below.
The official Washington local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Vancouver.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Washington level first; our Washington rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Vancouver or your HOA adds anything.
A simple order checklist
- List everyone who might want something, and don't forget those who were close to your pet but haven't said anything.
- Ask each person three things: necklace, ring or keyring; which metal they wear comfortably; and whether they'd like ashes, fur or only a print.
- Work out how far the ashes go. The sharing planner shows the split once the pieces are counted.
- Order the set from one maker so finishes, chains and engraving match, and ask whether they price sets differently.
- Fill every piece in one sitting, so the urn is opened a single time and sealed up properly when you're done.
- Post far-away pieces with tracking, each in a small box with a care card and a short note.
Beyond the pendant: keeping your pet close
The Columbia River, the Cascade foothills and Mount St. Helens are part of daily views in Vancouver, and many residents want a memorial connected to that landscape. If you're thinking of scattering, check the rules for the specific river access or public land first. A keepsake holding a small amount of ashes, or a stone from a favorite hiking spot beside the urn, can offer a similar sense of connection.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Washington?
For people, yes: about 79.1%[5] of Washington deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Vancouver follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Vancouver?
Usually yes. Camas is about 8 miles away, Portland is about 9 miles away and Battle Ground is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Vancouver?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 82°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Roughly how many pets die in Vancouver each year?
Our estimate is around 6,100. It comes from Vancouver's population (about 199,698), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 73,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
What if my memorial pendant breaks or I lose it?
If it breaks, stop wearing it and put it in a small sealed bag straight away so no ash is lost. A jeweler can often replace a bail or clasp without opening the chamber. For peace of mind, keep a little spare ash in the urn so a replacement can be filled, and ask whether your home insurance covers jewelry.
Is gold-plated cremation jewelry worth it?
For occasional wear, often yes. Gold-plated ash pendants cost about $88 to $170 at one US retailer, against $1,298–$4,750[12] for solid 14k gold there. Plating wears through at the edges with daily use, especially with sweat, so for everyday wear, solid gold, sterling or titanium lasts longer. Ask the maker how thick the plating is before you buy.
