Rockhampton, Queensland
Local maker or mail-in: the Rockhampton picture
Families around Rockhampton are often scattered across central Queensland, working in mining towns, on stations or in Gladstone and Mackay. Splitting the ashes means more than one household can keep something: a full urn for the family home, and a few sealed miniatures or a locket for those further away. Write the animal's name and the date on the base of each.
Seven in ten Australians choose cremation, and many Rockhampton families keep a pet's ashes at home or take them somewhere meaningful. Some drive out to Yeppoon or Emu Park, others to a quiet spot on the family property, a dam wall or a favourite ridge. Choose a calm, dry-season day, and hold back a small portion in case someone who can't come wants it later.
Craft fairs and weekend markets around Rockhampton sometimes have silversmiths or glassworkers who'll take a memorial commission. Before handing anything over, ask how they'll store the ashes until the work is done, whether unused ash comes back and how they'll let you know it's ready. A short written note of what was agreed protects you both.

Our estimate
26,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Rockhampton has (estimate)
How we calculated this
79,000 ÷ 2.5 = 31,600 households; × 49% (dog) + 34% (cat) = 26,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,200
Rockhampton families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
26,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Australia
About 71%[5] of people in Australia are cremated, so most families here have already met ashes jewelry through a relative, a friend or a funeral home display. That makes a pet pendant feel ordinary rather than strange, and it means local jewelers are more likely to have filled one before. Ask them; you may find the same pieces sold for people are sold for pets, just with a paw print or a different engraving.
We take the Australia rate from FuneralSmart (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Rockhampton, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Rockhampton weather, water and your memorial piece
If you're mailing ashes from Rockhampton to a maker, weather mostly affects how long the parcel takes. Send early in the week, use tracking and a signature, and ask the maker to confirm arrival. The ashes themselves aren't harmed by heat or cold; only resin pieces coming back need to avoid long hot waits.

How much to budget for a memorial piece
Pet crematories in Australia and New Zealand often sell a few keepsake pendants alongside urns, though prices are rarely published. For comparison, handmade silver pet-ash pendants from a UK maker cost £180–£299[6], and a US lab charges $3,499[7] for a quarter-carat memorial diamond. Use the table as a guide rather than a Rockhampton quote.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Queensland
If you rent or share a building in Queensland, a pendant raises no issues at all, but burying the rest of the ashes in a shared garden might. Landlords, homeowners' associations and park authorities can set conditions of their own. The notes below give Queensland's general position; check with whoever controls the land before scattering or burying what's left.
In Australia, pet crematories in the capitals often stock a few keepsake pendants and can pack a small portion of ashes separately. Much custom work is ordered from overseas, which adds shipping time and cost. Summer heat is hard on resin pieces left in cars, and beach and pool days are a good reason to choose glass or take a pendant off before swimming.
For Queensland's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Queensland guide. Local rules in Rockhampton can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. Staff can usually clip fur and take a paw print while your pet is still there; once the body goes for cremation, that chance has passed.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, and without ashes a filled pendant isn't possible.
- Write a note on the form asking for about a teaspoon in its own small bag, labeled with your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. By our estimate, ashes are usually back with you in 3 to 14 days[9], and no jewelry decision has to be made before they arrive.
- Start with one simple piece. A steel or silver pendant you fill yourself is enough to begin with; custom work can come later, once you know what you like wearing.
- Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Having a friend or partner sitting with you tends to make the moment gentler.
Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
Rockhampton's big suburban blocks have room for an outdoor memorial: a bottle tree, a poinciana or a frangipani planted by the back fence, perhaps with an engraved rock beneath. Whatever you choose has to survive fierce sun, wet-season downpours and months of humidity, so granite and glazed ceramic outlast timber and soft stone. Indoors, a small urn or a framed print suits a shelf.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Rockhampton each year?
Our estimate is around 2,200. It comes from Rockhampton's population (about 79,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 26,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is cremation common in Australia?
For people, yes: about 71%[5] of Australia deaths end in cremation, according to FuneralSmart (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rockhampton follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How much does pet cremation jewelry cost in Rockhampton?
We haven't found reliable published prices from local makers, so we use the clearest overseas ones as a guide: US steel pendants start from $19.95[10], a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[11], and a Swiss lab lists memorial diamonds at $1,400–$40,500[12]. Local jewelers and crematories in Rockhampton will price in their own currency, so ask for a written total including shipping.
Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?
Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[13], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[14] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
Is pet memorial jewelry common in Rockhampton?
We don't have a local count, but by our estimate about 26,000 Rockhampton households have a dog or cat, and around 2,200 of those pets die each year. Even if only a small share of those families choose jewelry, that's a lot of pendants being worn quietly around town. You're far from the only one.
