The larger cities usually have more local options; smaller towns rely more on mail-in makers. Either way, most pieces need less than a teaspoon of ashes, leaving the rest for an urn, a scattering or a burial.
People in Canada wear memorial pieces in very different ways: under a shirt every day, on special occasions only, clipped to a keyring or kept in a box. There's no correct way. Before ordering, think about how you'll actually use the piece, because that decides the material, the closure and how much it's sensible to spend.

That makes a pet pendant feel ordinary rather than strange, and it means local jewelers are more likely to have filled one before. Small doesn't mean cheap, and Canadian crematory price lists show it. What Canada allows with your pet's ashes
Wearing ashes is a private choice, and Canada asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. Below is the Canada side; a postal carrier's own conditions sit alongside it.
In Canada, many pet crematories sell keepsake pendants alongside urns and will portion ashes for jewelry on request. Buying from US makers means adding cross-border shipping and possibly duty, and posting ashes across the border has its own rules, so check with the maker first. Long, cold winters make ring sizing worth extra care: measure indoors, late in the day.
From ashes to pendant in Canada: the steps
- Wait until you're ready. Ashes keep indefinitely, and there's no deadline for jewelry.
- Collect prints and fur early if you can. Once cremation has happened there's no way to take a paw print, nose print or fur clipping, and having them widens what you can order later.
- Measure carefully. Ring size at the end of the day, chain length against your collarbone, and ask each relative about metal allergies.
- Ask the maker how they handle ashes. Find out the quantity they want, the way each portion is labeled, and what happens to any ash left over.
- If you mail ashes, pack them properly. Seal them in a small bag, cushion it inside a sturdy box and use the service the maker names, with tracking.
- Approve a proof of the engraving, especially a paw or nose print, and only then let the maker start.
Beyond the pendant: keeping your pet close

Can I get a paw print engraved in Canada without mailing ashes?
Yes. Engraving needs only an image: inked paw on card, a clay mold photographed straight on or a sharp photo of the paw pad. A local engraver can work from that, or you can email it to a specialist maker. No ashes need to move, which is why print pieces are popular with relatives who live far away.

How can I tell whether a maker serving Canada is reliable?
Look for clear written instructions on sending ashes, a stated turnaround, a policy on returning unused ash and photos of past memorial work. Ask how your ashes are labeled while in the workshop. Can I post pet ashes to a maker from Canada?
Postal rules differ by country, and many services restrict sending ashes abroad. Check the current rules with your national post before packing anything, and ask the maker how they want it sent. A self-fill pendant, filled at home or by a local jeweler, avoids posting ashes at all.
Do jewelers in Canada charge to fill a pendant bought elsewhere?
