Prague, Czech Republic
Where Prague families get memorial jewelry made
With the Czech Republic's human cremation rate above 80 percent, keeping ashes at home or placing them somewhere personal feels natural to many Prague families. For a pet, that might mean an urn on a shelf, a piece of jewellery with a little ash, a framed paw print, or a tree planted at the family cottage. Ask the provider about options before the cremation so portions can be set aside.
Dušičky, All Souls' Day on 2 November, is when Czech families light candles on graves, and many quietly light one for a pet too. A candle beside a photo at home, a visit to a pet cemetery on the city's edge, or a moment at the cottage garden can all be part of it. There is no single right memorial; the yearly ritual is often what matters most.
In a metro like Prague, your pet's crematory is often the easiest first stop. Many sell a small range of pendants and can set a portion of ashes aside in a separate pouch when they return the rest, so you aren't opening a sealed urn at home later. If they don't, ask whether they'll put a teaspoon in its own labeled bag. It costs little or nothing and makes every jewelry option easier afterwards.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Czech Republic
With about 85.64%[1] of people in Czech Republic choosing cremation, the local market for memorial products is well developed, and that includes jewelry. You'll likely find crematories and funeral suppliers with a range of pendants and rings, sometimes the very same designs they offer for people. Use that familiarity: staff can usually tell you which closures hold up and which come back loose.
The Czech Republic percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Prague, not as a count of pets.
Prague weather, water and your memorial piece
If you're mailing ashes from Prague to a maker, weather mostly affects how long the parcel takes. Send early in the week, use tracking and a signature, and ask the maker to confirm arrival. The ashes themselves aren't harmed by heat or cold; only resin pieces coming back need to avoid long hot waits.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
The price of the cremation shapes the jewelry budget. Shared (communal) cremation sends no ashes home and costs far less; in the UK, the competition regulator found it two to five times cheaper than individual cremation[5]. For a pendant in Prague, budget for individual cremation first, then the piece: a UK silver ring at £165–£300[6] shows what handmade costs (one UK maker's price).

Mailing, dividing and scattering: the rules in Czech Republic
One practical point matters before any jewelry decision: the cremation has to be individual if you want ashes back, since communal cremations don't return them. After that, Czech Republic leaves the ashes largely to you. What follows summarizes local scattering and burial points, useful because most of the ashes will still need a home once a pendant is filled.
A simple order checklist
- Call the crematory or your vet and ask whether they sell jewelry, can portion ashes for it or know a local jeweler who fills pendants.
- Compare two or three options near Prague: a jeweler in town, the crematory's own counter, and an online studio that specializes in ash pieces.
- Check allergies and sizing for everyone getting a piece.
- Decide on engraving. The name, the dates, a paw print, or plain metal; either way, sign off the text and proof by email or on paper.
- Arrange the ashes. You can deliver them by hand, do the filling at home, or post them using a tracked, signed-for service that the maker has okayed.
- Wear it and check it. Every few weeks give the seal and clasp a quick look, and remove it before swimming or gardening.
- Store it safely at night in a soft pouch, somewhere it won't meet perfume, heat or a hard knock.
More ways to keep your pet in daily life
The Vltava, Petřín Hill and the forests around Prague are places many families connect with, and some want a memorial that brings them to mind: a stone engraved with a river motif, a photo from a favourite spot, or a small portion of ashes scattered somewhere quiet. Check what rules apply before scattering in a public place, and keep some back if you are unsure.

Questions people ask
Why does the Prague page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 85.64%[1] of Czech Republic residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What if my pet had a communal cremation and no ashes came back?
You can still have a meaningful piece. Fur you kept, a paw or nose print taken by the vet, or even a clear photo can be engraved on silver or set in resin. Ask the clinic whether they took a print before your pet left; many do as standard. If you'd like prints of another pet in future, the paw print kit chooser compares the options.
How long does a memorial diamond take to make?
Much longer than any other piece. One US lab quotes 7–10 months[8] from submission to delivery, a Swiss lab about 12 months[9], and across three providers the average is about 8.5 months[10]. If you want something to wear sooner, many people order a simple pendant first and add the diamond later.
Do I need the cremation certificate to order ash jewelry?
Usually not for a pendant you fill yourself or have filled locally. Some mail-in makers and most memorial-diamond labs ask for it, or for a signed form, to confirm what they're receiving and whose ashes they are. Keep it with the urn; it's also useful if you ever carry ashes on a flight or across a border.
How do I get a small portion out of a sealed urn in Prague?
Many urns open from the base, with screws or a sliding panel under a felt pad. Inside there's usually a plastic bag with a twist tie. Open it over a tray, lift out a spoonful with a dry teaspoon, then retie the bag and close the urn. If the urn is glued, or you'd rather not do it, the crematory that returned the ashes or a Prague jeweler can usually help.
Can I get matching pieces for family in other cities?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people choose jewelry. Order the whole set from one maker so the pieces match, agree how much ash each gets and decide whether you'll fill them in Prague and post them, or send each relative an empty piece plus a small sealed portion. The ashes sharing planner helps with the split.
