Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia
Finding pet cremation jewelry in Bonn
In a Bonn flat, a memorial is often something small and personal: an urn on a shelf beside a photo, a pendant holding a pinch of ashes, or a paw print impression. If family members live elsewhere in Germany or abroad, ask for small keepsake containers so the ashes can be shared. A compact urn is also easier to take with you if you move.
The Rhine meadows of the Rheinaue, the Kottenforst woods and the hills of the Siebengebirge across the river are places many Bonn families link with their animals. Some would like a portion of the ashes to rest in nature. Rules on scattering vary, so check with the local authority first, or consider a biodegradable urn planted in your own garden or a pet cemetery plot.
Pet crematories serving Bonn often cover Cologne and a wider area too, so a handful of businesses look after most local pets. That's useful: ask one of them which jewelers their customers have used for filling. They hear feedback, good and bad, that never reaches online reviews.
About 330,000 people live in Bonn, which makes it the 5th-largest of the 6 North Rhine-Westphalia communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Cologne, about 15 miles (24 km) away, which is where some providers serving Bonn are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Cologne (15 miles, a larger centre), Dusseldorf (37 miles) and Essen (50 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

a pinch (at most about a teaspoon)[4]
An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Cremation habits in Germany
Cremation covers about 76.0%[1] of human deaths in Germany, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[5] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.
For the Germany figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bonn rather than as pet data.
Timing fittings and ceremonies around Bonn's weather
Whatever Bonn's weather, the biggest risks to a memorial piece are everyday ones: a chain caught on a sweater, sweat in a thread, a glass bead dropped on tile. Choose a sturdy bail and clasp, seal the screw and keep a small pouch handy for when you take it off.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
Memorial diamonds are one area where Europe has its own labs. One Swiss lab prices pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[6] and asks for at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[7]. Everyday pieces cost far less: a UK glass charm bead or silver-and-glass ring runs £120–£395[8] (one UK maker's price). Treat the table as a guide for Bonn, not a quote.

Rules for keeping, sharing and mailing ashes in North Rhine-Westphalia
Dividing a pet's ashes is entirely legal and very common. Most pieces take less than a teaspoon, so the bigger decision is what happens to the rest. Here's what North Rhine-Westphalia allows for burial and scattering, and a reminder that if you plan to send ashes to a maker, the postal service's own rules apply on top of anything local.
In Germany, human ashes are tightly regulated and usually must go to a cemetery, which is why memorial diamonds from human ashes are typically made abroad. Pet ashes aren't covered by those rules, so keeping, dividing and wearing them is up to you. Ask the Tierkrematorium whether it offers Erinnerungsschmuck (memorial jewelry) or can pack a small portion separately.
Your order, one step at a time
- Wait until you're ready. Ashes don't deteriorate, so a piece can be made whenever it feels right.
- Collect prints and fur early if you can. Once cremation has happened there's no way to take a paw print, nose print or fur clipping, and having them widens what you can order later.
- Measure carefully. Ring size at the end of the day, chain length against your collarbone, and ask each relative about metal allergies.
- Ask the maker how they handle ashes. How much they need, how they label it, whether they return what they don't use.
- If you mail ashes, pack them properly. Put them in a sealed bag first, pad that bag inside a strong box, and send it by the tracked carrier the maker tells you to use.
- Approve a proof for any engraving, especially paw or nose prints, before the piece is made.
Other ways to remember your pet in Bonn
Germany has a long tradition of pet cemeteries, and many families in the Bonn area choose a grave or urn plot where they can visit and leave flowers. Others keep ashes at home or plant a tree in the garden. For an outdoor memorial, choose stone or metal that can handle wet winters, and think about where you'll want to sit when you visit.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Cologne to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Cologne (roughly 15 miles from Bonn) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bonn?
Usually yes. Cologne is about 15 miles away, Dusseldorf is about 37 miles away and Essen is about 50 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bonn follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?
Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[4], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[10] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
How do I get a small portion out of a sealed urn in Bonn?
Many urns open from the base, with screws or a sliding panel under a felt pad. Inside there's usually a plastic bag with a twist tie. Open it over a tray, lift out a spoonful with a dry teaspoon, then retie the bag and close the urn. If the urn is glued, or you'd rather not do it, the crematory that returned the ashes or a Bonn jeweler can usually help.
