Wearing your pet's ashes in Hong Kong: jewelry options

Hong Kong, Hong Kong Island

Who fills and seals ash jewelry around Hong Kong

Pet memorial niches, where urns are kept in a shared columbarium-style space, are one option for families who don't want to keep ashes at home, and they give you a place to visit. Ask about ongoing fees and visiting arrangements before choosing. Paw prints, fur clippings and memorial jewelry made with ashes are small keepsakes that fit easily into a Hong Kong flat.

Hong Kong homes rarely have spare space, so compact urns, photo frames with an ash compartment and keepsake jewelry are popular choices. A small urn on a shelf beside a photo and a favorite toy is a common memorial. If you'd like to share ashes with family overseas, ask for a portion to be set aside in small keepsake urns before the rest are sealed.

Handing ashes over in person is the main reason Hong Kong owners go local. You can watch a jeweler measure out a pinch, fill the chamber and seal it, and the rest of the ashes never leave your sight. Ask when you call whether they do this for walk-ins or by appointment, whether they charge for filling a piece you bought elsewhere and whether they'll use a permanent adhesive on the screw. Many jewelers have done it before; a few will politely decline, which is fine too.

About 7,482,000 people live in Hong Kong.

Families in Hong Kong often end up using a provider from Kowloon (1 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

A pet at home in Hong Kong

What local customs mean for a memorial piece

Cremation covers about 96.96%[1] of human deaths in Hong Kong, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[5] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.

The Hong Kong figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Hong Kong

Whatever Hong Kong's weather, the biggest risks to a memorial piece are everyday ones: a chain caught on a sweater, sweat in a thread, a glass bead dropped on tile. Choose a sturdy bail and clasp, seal the screw and keep a small pouch handy for when you take it off.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond

In many Asian cities, pet funeral providers sell keepsake pendants as part of a package, and prices vary widely. As a reference, a sterling silver ash necklace at one US retailer costs $88–$298[3], and a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[6]. If you're in Hong Kong and considering a diamond, one Swiss lab lists pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[7].

Rules for keeping, sharing and mailing ashes in Hong Kong Island

If you rent or share a building in Hong Kong Island, a pendant raises no issues at all, but burying the rest of the ashes in a shared garden might. Landlords, homeowners' associations and park authorities can set conditions of their own. The notes below give Hong Kong Island's general position; check with whoever controls the land before scattering or burying what's left.

In Hong Kong, families who want ashes returned arrange private cremation, and many pet funeral providers sell keepsake pendants. Space at home is tight, so jewelry is a popular way to keep a pet close without a large urn. Humidity speeds tarnish on silver; titanium, glass or a sealed gold piece holds up better year-round.

Your order, one step at a time

  1. Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. While your pet is still with the practice, staff can generally cut a lock of fur and press a paw print; after the body has left for the crematory, it's too late.
  2. Check the cremation form says individual or private. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, and without ashes a filled pendant isn't possible.
  3. Write a note on the form asking for about a teaspoon in its own small bag, labeled with your pet's name.
  4. Let the first days pass. Ashes usually come home within 3 to 14 days, by our estimate[9], and nothing about jewelry needs deciding before then.
  5. Start with one simple piece. A steel or silver pendant you fill yourself is enough to begin with; custom work can come later, once you know what you like wearing.
  6. Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Having a friend or partner sitting with you tends to make the moment gentler.

More ways to keep your pet in daily life

Many Hong Kong families remember loved ones during the Ching Ming and Chung Yeung festivals, and some extend that tradition to pets with incense, flowers or a favorite treat placed beside the urn. A small memorial stone or engraved plaque works well on a balcony or windowsill. Choose materials that can stand up to humidity and typhoon rain if it will be outdoors.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Hong Kong?

For people, yes: about 96.96%[1] of Hong Kong deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hong Kong follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How long does a memorial diamond take to make?

Much longer than any other piece. One US lab quotes 7–10 months[10] from submission to delivery, a Swiss lab about 12 months[11], and across three providers the average is about 8.5 months[8]. If you want something to wear sooner, many people order a simple pendant first and add the diamond later.

Can I use my pet's fur instead of ashes?

Yes. Fur can't go into molten glass, but it sets well in resin, where you can still see its color. Some memorial-diamond labs can also work from fur; one Swiss lab needs about 5 g[12]. Fur has to be clipped before cremation, so if your pet is still with you, it's worth taking a little from a hidden spot now.

How do I get a small portion out of a sealed urn in Hong Kong?

Many urns open from the base, with screws or a sliding panel under a felt pad. Inside there's usually a plastic bag with a twist tie. Open it over a tray, lift out a spoonful with a dry teaspoon, then retie the bag and close the urn. If the urn is glued, or you'd rather not do it, the crematory that returned the ashes or a Hong Kong jeweler can usually help.

How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?

Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[13], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[12]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.

Can I send my pet's ashes by post from Hong Kong?

Often yes within the country, but rules differ by postal service and many restrict sending ashes abroad. Check the current rules with the national post or a courier before you pack anything, and ask the maker how they want it sent. If sending feels risky, a self-fill pendant filled at home or by a local jeweler avoids mailing ashes at all.
