Kowloon, Hong Kong
Who fills and seals ash jewelry around Kowloon
Some Kowloon families remember pets during the Ching Ming and Chung Yeung festivals with incense, flowers or a favorite treat beside the urn at home. A memorial niche at a pet facility in the New Territories offers another place to visit. Ask about fees and visiting arrangements before choosing, and keep a small keepsake at home as well, like a paw print, a fur lock or a pendant holding a little of the ashes.
Kowloon flats are among the smallest in Hong Kong, so memorials need to be compact: a small urn on a shelf, a photo frame with an ash compartment, or a pendant sealed around a pinch of ashes. Many families keep a favorite toy or collar beside the urn. If relatives would like to share, ask for small keepsake urns to be filled before the main urn is sealed.
In a metro like Kowloon, your pet's crematory is often the easiest first stop. Many sell a small range of pendants and can set a portion of ashes aside in a separate pouch when they return the rest, so you aren't opening a sealed urn at home later. If they don't, ask whether they'll put a teaspoon in its own labeled bag. It costs little or nothing and makes every jewelry option easier afterwards.
Kowloon is home to about 2,100,000 people.

What local customs mean for a memorial piece
Cremation accounts for around 96.96%[1] of deaths in Hong Kong, so the local trade is busy: crematories, funeral suppliers and jewelers all see ashes regularly. For you, that means more choice and some competition on price. It's reasonable to get two quotes for filling and sealing and to ask to see a finished memorial piece the jeweler has made.
The Hong Kong percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Kowloon, not as a count of pets.
Kowloon weather, water and your memorial piece
Without local climate figures for Kowloon, one tip covers every season: photograph your piece and its engraving the day it arrives, front and back, in good light. If it's ever damaged or lost, a clear photo helps a jeweler repair or remake it faithfully, and it helps with an insurance claim too.

Prices by metal, glass and diamond
Humidity and price both favor simple metals. Stainless steel pendants (from $19.95[2]) and titanium pieces resist tarnish better than silver wherever summers are humid, and they cost far less than the $1,298–$4,750[5] a solid gold pendant runs at one US retailer. A local jeweler in Kowloon can usually fill and seal either kind.

Rules for keeping, sharing and mailing ashes in Hong Kong
Dividing a pet's ashes is entirely legal and very common. Most pieces take less than a teaspoon, so the bigger decision is what happens to the rest. Here's what Hong Kong allows for burial and scattering, and a reminder that if you plan to send ashes to a maker, the postal service's own rules apply on top of anything local.
In Hong Kong, families who want ashes returned arrange private cremation, and many pet funeral providers sell keepsake pendants. Space at home is tight, so jewelry is a popular way to keep a pet close without a large urn. Humidity speeds tarnish on silver; titanium, glass or a sealed gold piece holds up better year-round.
Your order, one step at a time
- Use a vet where it happened. A local clinic can arrange cremation with a nearby crematory and explain how the ashes can reach you.
- Ask how the ashes will travel home. Tracked delivery, collection by a friend or carrying them yourself are the usual choices; each country's post sets its own conditions.
- Keep the cremation certificate with the container. Border and airport staff may want to see it, and certain jewelry makers will ask for it too.
- Leave the container closed until you're home. Taking out a portion for jewelry can wait for a calm moment in your own kitchen.
- Pick a maker close to home, so a portion can be handed over in Kowloon instead of being posted a second time.
- Read up before you fly with ashes. Questions about carry-on bags and security screening are answered in our guide to traveling with ashes.
Remembering your pet, in Kowloon and beyond
In a district where every square foot matters, keepsake jewelry, small engraved stones and paw prints pressed in clay are popular ways to remember a pet without needing space. A small memorial plaque on a windowsill or a rooftop planter can give you a place to pause amid the noise of the streets below. Choose materials that handle humidity, strong sun and typhoon rain without fading.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Hong Kong?
For people, yes: about 96.96%[1] of Hong Kong deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kowloon follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[4], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[7] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
Can I get matching pieces for family in other cities?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons people choose jewelry. Order the whole set from one maker so the pieces match, agree how much ash each gets and decide whether you'll fill them in Kowloon and post them, or send each relative an empty piece plus a small sealed portion. The ashes sharing planner helps with the split.
Is there a jeweler in Kowloon who will fill a cremation pendant?
In a city the size of Kowloon, usually yes. Independent jewelers, especially those who do repairs and engraving, are most likely to fill and seal a pendant, sometimes while you wait. Some charge a small fee, and a few prefer not to handle ashes. Pet crematories may also fill pieces they sell. Call ahead and ask whether they seal the screw permanently.
Can I send my pet's ashes by post from Kowloon?
Often yes within the country, but rules differ by postal service and many restrict sending ashes abroad. Check the current rules with the national post or a courier before you pack anything, and ask the maker how they want it sent. If sending feels risky, a self-fill pendant filled at home or by a local jeweler avoids mailing ashes at all.
Can I use my pet's fur instead of ashes?
Yes. Fur can't go into molten glass, but it sets well in resin, where you can still see its color. Some memorial-diamond labs can also work from fur; one Swiss lab needs about 5 g[8]. Fur has to be clipped before cremation, so if your pet is still with you, it's worth taking a little from a hidden spot now.
