Como, Lombardy
Where Como families get memorial jewelry made
Como's centuries of silk weaving and careful craftsmanship still show in its workshops, and some families want a pet memorial that reflects that: a hand-thrown ceramic urn, a small piece of carved local stone, or a ring or pendant holding a trace of ashes. In a small flat, a compact piece on a shelf suits the space. Check any engraving letter by letter before it is made.
On 2 November many Como families visit relatives' graves, and some quietly add a pet's photo or a candle at home the same day. A small urn beside family pictures, a potted plant on the balcony or a stone at the foot of a garden wall can become part of that yearly moment. Let the memorial fit your household's customs, whatever they are.
In a smaller place like Como, there may not be a jeweler who handles cremation pieces, and that's normal. Most families here buy a self-fill pendant by mail, fill it at home with the small funnel it comes with and seal the screw with the adhesive in the kit. It takes ten quiet minutes. If you'd rather not do it yourself, a jeweler in a larger centre such as Milan may fill it for you.
Como is home to about 84,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Lombardy communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Como are based about 24 miles away in Milan, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Milan (24 miles, a larger centre), Turin (85 miles, a larger centre) and Verona (96 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Como too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
With about 38.16%[1] of people in Italy choosing cremation, local jewelers and crematories may carry fewer memorial pieces than in high-cremation areas. Expect to order more by mail and to ask a couple of shops before you find someone to fill a pendant. None of that makes the result any less good; it just means a bit more planning.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Italy figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Como tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Wearing ash jewelry through Como's seasons
We don't have a nearby weather station for Como, so plan around habits that matter anywhere. Keep perfume, hairspray and lotion off memorial pieces, since they cloud glass and dull metal; put jewelry on last when dressing; and take it off first at night. Those small routines protect a piece more than any choice about climate.

Prices by metal, glass and diamond
We haven't found reliable published prices from makers in Italy, so the table shows the clearest ones we could verify from UK, Swiss and US makers. A Swiss memorial-diamond lab lists pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[5], needing about 12 months[6], and a UK glass studio charges £170[7] for a glass ash pendant. Local jewelers in Como will quote in euros or their own currency, so ask for a written total.

Before you divide the ashes: Lombardy basics
You don't need anyone's permission to wear your pet's ashes. The rules that matter for jewelry are about moving ashes: postal services set their own conditions for mailing them, and airlines and borders sometimes ask questions. The notes below cover what Lombardy says about burial and scattering, which is useful for the ashes left over once the pendants are filled.
Your order, one step at a time
- Set a small portion aside. The crematory can bag a teaspoon on its own if you ask, or you can lift one out of the urn at home using a clean spoon, working over a sheet of paper.
- Decide who the pieces are for. Before ordering, find out how many people would like one, so the pieces match and the ash is portioned to suit.
- Choose a material that fits daily life. Sensitive skin does well with steel or titanium; glass can't leak; sterling silver looks traditional; and a diamond is the choice when you want something that lasts.
- Pick local filling or mail-in. A Como jeweler can fill and seal in person; a specialist elsewhere may offer more designs but means mailing ashes.
- Get a written price. Ask the quote to spell out what's covered: fill, seal, chain, engraving and the postage back to you.
- Seal and check. Confirm adhesive has gone on the screw thread, and look it over once more after you've worn it for a week.
Remembering your pet, in Como and beyond
Italy cremates fewer than half of its dead, though the practice is more common in Lombardy than in the south, and many older relatives still think of burial first. For a pet, cremation is widely accepted. Families keep the ashes at home, bury them under a tree in the garden where that is allowed, or choose a pet cemetery. Nobody needs to decide this week.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Como?
Usually yes. Milan is about 24 miles away, Turin is about 85 miles away and Verona is about 96 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Como follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Como actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Milan, about 24 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Como and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Do cremation pendants leak?
A well-made pendant with a sealed screw shouldn't. Leaks usually happen when the screw isn't glued and works loose with daily wear. Use the adhesive in the kit, or ask a Como jeweler to seal it permanently. Glass and memorial diamonds have no opening at all, so they can't leak.
Can I wear ash jewelry through airport security?
Generally yes. A sealed pendant or ring is treated like any other jewelry and usually doesn't need declaring. If you're carrying a separate portion of loose ashes to a maker or a relative, keep it in a screen-friendly container in your carry-on and bring the cremation certificate. Rules vary by airline and country, so check before you fly.
Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?
Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
