Rules for keeping, sharing and mailing ashes in Italy
If you rent or share a building in Italy, a pendant raises no issues at all, but burying the rest of the ashes in a shared garden might. Landlords, homeowners' associations and park authorities can set conditions of their own. The notes below give Italy's general position; check with whoever controls the land before scattering or burying what's left.
Getting a memorial piece made, step by step
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. While your pet is still with the practice, staff can generally cut a lock of fur and press a paw print; after the body has left for the crematory, it's too late.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. With communal cremation no ashes come back to you, and a pendant can't be filled with ashes you don't have.
- Write a note on the form asking for about a teaspoon in its own small bag, labeled with your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. By our estimate, ashes are usually back with you in 3 to 14 days[11], and no jewelry decision has to be made before they arrive.
- Start with one simple piece. A steel or silver pendant you fill yourself is enough to begin with; custom work can come later, once you know what you like wearing.

Can I get a paw print engraved in Italy without mailing ashes?
Yes. Engraving needs only an image: inked paw on card, a clay mold photographed straight on or a sharp photo of the paw pad. A local engraver can work from that, or you can email it to a specialist maker. No ashes need to move, which is why print pieces are popular with relatives who live far away.
Can I scatter the rest of the ashes after filling jewelry in Italy?
Usually yes, with some care. Private land with the owner's permission is simplest; parks, beaches and public land often have their own rules.
