Keeping your pet close in Florence: pendants, rings and glass

Florence, Tuscany

Local maker or mail-in: the Florence picture

The hills around Florence, from Fiesole to the vineyards toward Chianti, are places many families connect with Sunday outings. Scattering ashes in the countryside is a personal choice, but rules vary by comune and landowners must agree, so check first. Many Florentine families keep some ashes at home in a small urn or pendant even after scattering, so that there is always something to hold.

In Florence, burial remains the traditional choice for people, and on 2 November many families still carry chrysanthemums to relatives' graves. Some now remember a pet in the same season, with flowers beside the ashes or a candle on the windowsill. Having something physical to gather around, whether an urn, a small marble plaque or a keepsake, gives those moments a natural focus.

The postal route matters in Florence if you choose a distant maker. Find out which counter at the local post office handles tracked, signed parcels, and go at a quiet time. Some services require the parcel to be labeled as holding cremated remains, so answer plainly if asked, and keep the receipt until the maker confirms arrival.

Florence is home to about 382,000 people, the largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. Bologna, roughly 50 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Florence run from there.

If you want to compare providers, look at Siena (31 miles), Bologna (50 miles) and Portofino (108 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

A pet at home in Florence

Cremation in Italy and wearing a little of your pet

About 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, lower than in many places, and older relatives may expect a burial. Some families do both: the ashes are buried with a marker, and a pinch is kept back first for a pendant or two. It gives you a place to visit and something to carry, and it avoids a family disagreement becoming a choice between the two.

We take the Italy rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Florence, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Florence weather, water and your memorial piece

Climate affects rings more than pendants. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, so if you're ordering a sealed ring in Florence, measure at the end of the day in a comfortable room and ask about a comfort-fit band. It's the single most common reason memorial rings get returned.

Memorial jewelry prices Florence buyers can check

The price of the cremation shapes the jewelry budget. Shared (communal) cremation sends no ashes home and costs far less; in the UK, the competition regulator found it two to five times cheaper than individual cremation[5]. For a pendant in Florence, budget for individual cremation first, then the piece: a UK silver ring at £165–£300[6] shows what handmade costs (one UK maker's price).

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Tuscany: Tuscany costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules worth knowing before you order

One practical point matters before any jewelry decision: the cremation has to be individual if you want ashes back, since communal cremations don't return them. After that, Tuscany leaves the ashes largely to you. What follows summarizes local scattering and burial points, useful because most of the ashes will still need a home once a pendant is filled.

A simple order checklist

  1. List everyone who might want something, and don't forget those who were close to your pet but haven't said anything.
  2. Ask each person three things: necklace, ring or keyring; which metal they wear comfortably; and whether they'd like ashes, fur or only a print.
  3. Work out how far the ashes go. The sharing planner shows the split once the pieces are counted.
  4. Order the set from one maker so finishes, chains and engraving match, and ask whether they price sets differently.
  5. Fill every piece in one sitting, opening the urn once and closing it properly afterwards.
  6. Post far-away pieces with tracking, each in a small box with a care card and a short note.

Sharing the memory with family

Florence has centuries of craftsmanship, from the goldsmiths of the Ponte Vecchio to marble from nearby Carrara and terracotta from Impruneta. Many families choose a memorial with that same care: a piece of jewellery holding a few ashes, a small marble or stone urn, a terracotta planter, or a paw print impression. Handmade pieces often feel more personal than mass-produced ones.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Bologna to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Bologna (roughly 50 miles from Florence) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?

Usually yes. Siena is about 31 miles away, Bologna is about 50 miles away and Portofino is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Florence page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Is cremation jewelry safe for children to wear?

For younger children, a piece with a sealed chamber and a breakaway cord is safer than a long chain, and a glass bead or a charm kept in a special box may be better still. Older children often love wearing a small pendant. Whatever you choose, make sure the screw is sealed with adhesive.

Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?

Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.

Can I wear ash jewelry through airport security?

Generally yes. A sealed pendant or ring is treated like any other jewelry and usually doesn't need declaring. If you're carrying a separate portion of loose ashes to a maker or a relative, keep it in a screen-friendly container in your carry-on and bring the cremation certificate. Rules vary by airline and country, so check before you fly.
