Kobe, Hyogo
Local maker or mail-in: the Kobe picture
Some Kobe owners like a memorial that reflects the sea and the mountains: a small engraved stone from a garden in the hills, or a glass keepsake that holds a little ash. Before scattering ashes on Mount Rokko or at sea, check what rules apply, as parks and harbours have their own. Dividing ashes into a pendant or small keepsake urns lets family members each keep a share.
Paw prints, a lock of fur or feathers and a photograph are keepsakes many Kobe families ask for before cremation. With relatives often living in Osaka, Kyoto or overseas, small matching keepsake urns or pendants can be sent to each household, while the main urn stays at home. Tell the provider which keepsakes you want before the cremation begins, so the right amount of ashes can be set aside.
A market the size of Kobe also supports specialists you won't find in smaller places: jewelers who cast a piece directly from a paw-print impression, engravers who work from a nose-print photo and studios that set ash beneath a domed stone. If one of those appeals, ask for a portfolio of past memorial work rather than a general catalog, and a close-up of a finished seal.

Kobe sits within easy reach of Osaka (17 miles), Nara (35 miles) and Kyoto (39 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Kobe; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Japan
Cremation covers about 99.97%[1] of human deaths in Japan, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[5] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.
The Japan percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Kobe, not as a count of pets.
Timing fittings and ceremonies around Kobe's weather
We don't have a nearby weather station for Kobe, so plan around habits that matter anywhere. Keep perfume, hairspray and lotion off memorial pieces, since they cloud glass and dull metal; put jewelry on last when dressing; and take it off first at night. Those small routines protect a piece more than any choice about climate.

Memorial jewelry prices Kobe buyers can check
In many Asian cities, pet funeral providers sell keepsake pendants as part of a package, and prices vary widely. As a reference, a sterling silver ash necklace at one US retailer costs $88–$298[3], and a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[6]. If you're in Kobe and considering a diamond, one Swiss lab lists pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[7].

Mailing, dividing and scattering: the rules in Hyogo
Pet ashes are handled very differently from human remains in most places, Hyogo included. There's no register, no permit to divide them and no limit on how many pieces you make. Rules only return when ashes leave your home, whether onto public land, into water or into the mail. Here's what applies locally.
In Japan, keeping a small share of remains close at home is a familiar tradition, and dividing remains between family members is common. Pet funeral providers often offer small keepsake pendants as part of a package. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) before booking, since some municipal routes don't return them, and whether a portion can be set aside for jewelry.
From ashes to pendant in Kobe: the steps
- Ask for keepsakes before you leave the clinic. Staff can usually clip fur and take a paw print while your pet is still there; once the body goes for cremation, that chance has passed.
- Check the cremation form says individual or private. Communal cremation doesn't return ashes, and without ashes a filled pendant isn't possible.
- Write a note on the form requesting roughly a teaspoon set apart in a little bag that carries your pet's name.
- Let the first days pass. Ashes usually come home within 3 to 14 days, by our estimate[9], and nothing about jewelry needs deciding before then.
- Start with one simple piece. A self-fill steel or silver pendant is plenty at first; custom work can follow once you know what you want to wear.
- Fill it with someone you trust beside you. Many people find the moment easier with a partner or friend at the table.
Remembering your pet, in Kobe and beyond
Kobe knows loss well: the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake shaped the city, and remembering is part of its character. Many families keep a pet's ashes at home on a small altar with a photo and a candle, and some move them later to a temple or shared pet memorial. Ask about urn sizes that suit a tower apartment or a small house on a hillside street.

Questions people ask
Why does the Kobe page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Kobe?
The closest communities we cover are Osaka (about 17 miles), Nara (about 35 miles) and Kyoto (about 39 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Kobe too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation jewelry safe for children to wear?
For younger children, a piece with a sealed chamber and a breakaway cord is safer than a long chain, and a glass bead or a charm kept in a special box may be better still. Older children often love wearing a small pendant. Whatever you choose, make sure the screw is sealed with adhesive.
How much does pet cremation jewelry cost in Kobe?
We haven't found reliable published prices from local makers, so we use the clearest overseas ones as a guide: US steel pendants start from $19.95[2], a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[6], and a Swiss lab lists memorial diamonds at $1,400–$40,500[7]. Local jewelers and crematories in Kobe will price in their own currency, so ask for a written total including shipping.
Can I use my pet's fur instead of ashes?
Yes. Fur can't go into molten glass, but it sets well in resin, where you can still see its color. Some memorial-diamond labs can also work from fur; one Swiss lab needs about 5 g[10]. Fur has to be clipped before cremation, so if your pet is still with you, it's worth taking a little from a hidden spot now.
How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?
Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[11], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[10]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.
