Finding pet cremation jewelry in Kyoto
On the night of 16 August, bonfires are lit on the mountains around Kyoto to send the spirits of the dead back at the end of Obon, and many families think of lost pets as well. A quiet evening with the pet's photo, a candle and a memorial stone or urn nearby can be a way to mark it. Obon and the equinox weeks are common times for temple memorial visits.
Kyoto's crafts, from ceramics to lacquer and woodwork, give families unusual choices for a memorial: a hand-thrown urn, a small lacquered box for a keepsake, a carved nameplate. Before choosing, think about where it will sit and how much space you have in a townhouse or apartment. Ask the provider for paw prints or a lock of fur before cremation, because they cannot be taken afterwards.
Handing ashes over in person is the main reason Kyoto owners go local. You can watch a jeweler measure out a pinch, fill the chamber and seal it, and the rest of the ashes never leave your sight. Ask when you call whether they do this for walk-ins or by appointment, whether they charge for filling a piece you bought elsewhere and whether they'll use a permanent adhesive on the screw. Many jewelers have done it before; a few will politely decline, which is fine too.
Kyoto is home to about 1,475,000 people.
Kyoto sits within easy reach of Nara (23 miles), Osaka (27 miles) and Kobe (39 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Kyoto; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
With cremation this usual in Japan (around 99.97%[1] of deaths), friends are less likely to ask why you chose ashes and more likely to ask what you chose. That can be a relief, though it can also bring plenty of well-meant advice. What matters is how the piece feels after a month of wearing it, so take your time choosing.

How the local climate affects fit, seals and finish
Whatever Kyoto's weather, the biggest risks to a memorial piece are everyday ones: a chain caught on a sweater, sweat in a thread, a glass bead dropped on tile. Choose a sturdy bail and clasp, seal the screw and keep a small pouch handy for when you take it off.

How much to budget for a memorial piece
Pet funeral packages in Kyoto often include a small keepsake, so check before buying jewelry separately. For comparison, individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg costs JPY 22,000[5] at one Tokyo memorial park, and a witnessed cremation for a 20 to 30 kg dog JPY 60,500[6]. Ask your provider exactly what the package returns: all the ashes, a filled pendant or only a certificate.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Japan
One practical point matters before any jewelry decision: the cremation has to be individual if you want ashes back, since communal cremations don't return them. After that, Japan leaves the ashes largely to you. What follows summarizes local scattering and burial points, useful because most of the ashes will still need a home once a pendant is filled.
In Japan, keeping a small share of remains close at home is a familiar tradition, and dividing remains between family members is common. Pet funeral providers often offer small keepsake pendants as part of a package. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) before booking, since some municipal routes don't return them, and whether a portion can be set aside for jewelry.
Your order, one step at a time
- Use a vet where it happened. A local clinic can arrange cremation with a nearby crematory and explain how the ashes can reach you.
- Ask how the ashes will travel home. Tracked delivery, collection by a friend or carrying them yourself are the usual choices; each country's post sets its own conditions.
- Keep the cremation certificate with the container. It helps at airports and borders, and some jewelry makers ask to see it later.
- Leave the container closed until you're home. Setting aside a portion for jewelry is better done quietly at your own kitchen table.
- Pick a maker close to home, which lets you hand a portion over in Kyoto rather than putting the ashes in the post again.
- Read up before you fly with ashes. Questions about carry-on bags and security screening are answered in our guide to traveling with ashes.
Remembering your pet, in Kyoto and beyond
Kyoto families often keep a pet's ashes at home for a time on a small altar with a photograph, incense and flowers. Some move the ashes later to a temple's shared pet grave, where services are held on set days; others keep them at home for good or divide them between the two. Pendants, small keepsake urns and framed paw prints are all options if you want part of your pet close.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kyoto?
Usually yes. Nara is about 23 miles away, Osaka is about 27 miles away and Kobe is about 39 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kyoto follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[4], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[8] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
Do I need the cremation certificate to order ash jewelry?
Usually not for a pendant you fill yourself or have filled locally. Some mail-in makers and most memorial-diamond labs ask for it, or for a signed form, to confirm what they're receiving and whose ashes they are. Keep it with the urn; it's also useful if you ever carry ashes on a flight or across a border.
Can one pendant hold ashes from two pets?
Yes. Many chambers take a pinch from each, and some makers offer double-chambered pieces or two glass beads on one chain. Only mix the portions if you're sure, because once sealed they can't be separated. The capacity guide helps you check a chamber is big enough for both, and keeping a little of each pet apart in the urn leaves options open.
Should I buy memorial jewelry locally in Kyoto or online?
Buy locally if you want to hand ashes over in person, try on samples or get a ring sized properly. Buy online if you want a specific design, a paw print engraving or glass and resin work that local shops don't offer. Many Kyoto owners do both: order online, then have a local jeweler fill it or check the seal.
