Local maker or mail-in: the Tokyo picture
Space is precious in a Tokyo apartment, which is one reason small urns, compact home altars and keepsake jewelry are so popular here. Many families keep ashes on a shelf with a photo, incense and a favorite toy, the way a household butsudan honors people. If you're choosing an urn, think about where it will sit: a small ceramic or wooden urn on a bookshelf often suits a city home better than a large casket-style box.
Remembering pets through the year is part of life in Japan, with the summer Obon season and the spring and autumn equinoxes often used for visits and offerings. If you'd like a memorial that fits that rhythm, a small memorial stone or engraved tablet for a balcony garden or home altar gives you a place to leave flowers or treats. Choose weatherproof materials if it will sit outside through Tokyo's humid summers and typhoon rain.
Families in Tokyo are often spread across the metro and well beyond, so a lot of memorial jewelry here is ordered in sets: one pendant for each adult child, a bracelet charm for a partner, a keyring for someone who doesn't wear jewelry. If that's your plan, choose one maker for the whole set so the pieces match, agree who will do the filling and decide early whether the pieces for out-of-town relatives will be filled here and posted or sent empty with a small portion of ashes.
Tokyo is home to about 13,960,000 people, the largest of the 3 Japan communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Setagaya (2 miles), Minato (6 miles) and Kawasaki (10 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Tokyo too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
With cremation this usual in Japan (around 99.97%[1] of deaths), friends are less likely to ask why you chose ashes and more likely to ask what you chose. That can be a relief, though it can also bring plenty of well-meant advice. What matters is how the piece feels after a month of wearing it, so take your time choosing.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Japan figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Tokyo tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Tokyo
Without local climate figures for Tokyo, one tip covers every season: photograph your piece and its engraving the day it arrives, front and back, in good light. If it's ever damaged or lost, a clear photo helps a jeweler repair or remake it faithfully, and it helps with an insurance claim too.

What pet cremation jewelry costs for Tokyo families
Buying from overseas makers from Tokyo means adding shipping, import charges and the question of sending ashes abroad, which many postal services restrict. A self-fill pendant avoids that. Stainless steel ones start from $19.95[2] at one US retailer and can be shipped empty, then filled at home or by a local jeweler.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Japan: Japan costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you divide the ashes: Japan basics
There are very few rules about what you do with a pet's ashes. Keeping them at home, dividing them between family members and sealing a pinch in a pendant are all yours to decide. Where rules do come in is scattering the rest, burying them and sending them by post, which is why it's worth knowing the basics for Japan before you decide what happens to the ashes that don't go into jewelry.
In Japan, keeping a small share of remains close at home is a familiar tradition, and dividing remains between family members is common. Pet funeral providers often offer small keepsake pendants as part of a package. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) before booking, since some municipal routes don't return them, and whether a portion can be set aside for jewelry.
A simple order checklist
- Set a small portion aside. The crematory can bag a teaspoon on its own if you ask, or you can lift one out of the urn at home using a clean spoon, working over a sheet of paper.
- Decide who the pieces are for. Before ordering, find out how many people would like one, so the pieces match and the ash is portioned to suit.
- Choose a material that fits daily life. Steel or titanium for sensitive skin, glass for no leaks, sterling for a classic look, a diamond if permanence matters most.
- Pick local filling or mail-in. A Tokyo jeweler can fill and seal in person; a specialist elsewhere may offer more designs but means mailing ashes.
- Get a written price. Check whether filling, sealing, the chain, engraving and return postage are included.
- Seal and check. Confirm adhesive has gone on the screw thread, and look it over once more after you've worn it for a week.
Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
Tokyo has many temples that accept pet ashes into shared memorial vaults or hold regular services for animals, and some owners choose to place part of the ashes there and keep a portion at home. Splitting ashes is common, so ask for a keepsake urn or pendant alongside the main urn. A paw print taken before cremation, pressed in clay or ink, is a lasting keepsake that takes up almost no space.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Tokyo?
The closest communities we cover are Setagaya (about 2 miles), Minato (about 6 miles) and Kawasaki (about 10 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Tokyo too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Tokyo page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is cremation jewelry safe for children to wear?
For younger children, a piece with a sealed chamber and a breakaway cord is safer than a long chain, and a glass bead or a charm kept in a special box may be better still. Older children often love wearing a small pendant. Whatever you choose, make sure the screw is sealed with adhesive.
Can a jeweler engrave a pendant that's already filled?
Often, as long as the engraving goes on a solid surface away from the sealed thread. Laser engraving produces little heat and doesn't touch the chamber. Hand and rotary engraving put pressure on the piece, so tell the engraver it holds ashes and ask them to check the seal afterwards. Where you can, engrave first and fill second.
Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?
Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
How soon after cremation can I get a pendant filled in Tokyo?
As soon as the ashes are home, which by our estimate is typically 3 to 14 days after cremation[6]. A ready-made pendant can be filled by a local jeweler that same afternoon. There's no need to hurry, though. Many people wait weeks or months, and the ashes don't change while they wait.
