Minato, Tokyo
Who fills and seals ash jewelry around Minato
Shiba Park, Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park in Hiroo and the waterfront around Odaiba are places many Minato residents shared with their pets. Scattering ashes in Tokyo parks or the bay has its own rules, so check first. Many families keep the urn at home and set aside a small portion in a keepsake to carry with them. Some keep a single bone fragment in a pendant.
Apartments in Minato are often compact, so families here tend to choose small urns, memorial photo frames or a small home altar shelf for a pet. Jewelry holding a little of the ashes or a bone fragment is also popular. Decide where the memorial will sit in the apartment first, then choose an urn size that fits. A photo of your pet on the shelf beside it completes the corner.
Many Minato owners start with the crematory that handled their pet. Some sell pendants and charms at the counter, and most will portion out a small amount of ashes for jewelry when asked, which saves you opening the main container later. If the range is small, you can still buy elsewhere and bring the portion to a local jeweler to fill.
About 248,000 people live in Minato, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 3 Tokyo communities we cover. Tokyo, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Minato run from there.
Our pages for Setagaya (6 miles, a larger centre), Tokyo (6 miles, a larger centre) and Kawasaki (9 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Minato as well.

Why ashes jewelry is familiar (or new) in Japan
Where roughly 99.97%[1] of the population of Japan ends up cremated, many homes already have an urn on a shelf, sometimes more than one. That familiarity means a pet's ashes don't feel unusual in the house, and jewelry becomes a way to take a little of them out into the day. Some people wear a piece for a relative and another for a pet on the same chain.
That Japan rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Minato only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, sweat and cold: jewelry care in Minato
We don't have detailed weather data for Minato, but the same few rules apply almost everywhere. Take a filled pendant off before swimming, keep resin away from heat and strong sun, and let glass warm up gradually after cold. Seal the screw on any pendant and check it every few weeks.

Budgeting for a pendant, ring or glass piece
Humidity and price both favor simple metals. Stainless steel pendants (from $19.95[2]) and titanium pieces resist tarnish better than silver wherever summers are humid, and they cost far less than the $1,298–$4,750[5] a solid gold pendant runs at one US retailer. A local jeweler in Minato can usually fill and seal either kind.

Wearing ashes is your call; the rest has rules in Tokyo
Pet ashes are handled very differently from human remains in most places, Tokyo included. There's no register, no permit to divide them and no limit on how many pieces you make. Rules only return when ashes leave your home, whether onto public land, into water or into the mail. Here's what applies locally.
In Japan, keeping a small share of remains close at home is a familiar tradition, and dividing remains between family members is common. Pet funeral providers often offer small keepsake pendants as part of a package. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) before booking, since some municipal routes don't return them, and whether a portion can be set aside for jewelry.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Call your vet or an aftercare provider first. Collection, and when it happens, is what they'll explain; the jewelry can be thought about afterwards.
- If you can, keep a lock of fur. Before collection, a small snip from under the chin or the ruff, placed in a paper envelope, is all a resin piece needs.
- Press a paw into something soft such as modelling clay, or use washable ink, if either is nearby. If that feels beyond you right now, leave it; the vet or crematory can often take one instead.
- Say when you book that you want ashes back, plus a small separate portion for jewelry.
- Give yourself a few weeks. Shock makes choices harder, and a pendant chosen a month later means every bit as much.
- When you're ready, compare two routes: having a Minato jeweler fill a piece the same day, or commissioning a custom design from a specialist studio.
Remembering your pet, in Minato and beyond
Many international families in Minato eventually move abroad, and they may want to take a pet's ashes home. Ask your provider about documentation for carrying cremated remains overseas, and whether a sealed, travel-friendly urn is available. Paw prints and fur clippings should be requested before cremation, since they cannot be made afterwards. Your embassy may also have guidance. Airlines differ too.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Tokyo to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Tokyo (roughly 6 miles from Minato) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Minato?
The closest communities we cover are Setagaya (about 6 miles), Tokyo (about 6 miles) and Kawasaki (about 9 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Minato too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Minato page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What if my pet had a communal cremation and no ashes came back?
You can still have a meaningful piece. Fur you kept, a paw or nose print taken by the vet, or even a clear photo can be engraved on silver or set in resin. Ask the clinic whether they took a print before your pet left; many do as standard. If you'd like prints of another pet in future, the paw print kit chooser compares the options.
How do I fill a cremation pendant at home?
Work over a sheet of paper on a clear table. Unscrew the chamber, use the small funnel or straw from the kit to add a pinch of ash, tap gently to settle it, then add a drop of the supplied adhesive to the thread and screw it closed. Wipe off any excess and leave it to cure overnight before wearing.
Can I wear cremation jewelry in the shower?
Better not, for most pieces. Hot water, soap and shampoo can weaken adhesive over time and leave a film in engraving. Solid glass and memorial diamonds cope, but clasps and chains still wear. Take the piece off, put it in the same small dish every time and put it back on once you're dry, so it never gets left on a basin edge.
