Daejeon, South Korea

Where Daejeon families get memorial jewelry made

Apartment living means most Daejeon memorials are indoors: an urn or a case of memorial stones on a shelf, a framed photo, a paw print by the door. Some licensed pet funeral facilities also have columbaria where ashes can be placed in a niche and visited. If you are considering that, ask about fees, how long a niche can be kept and whether you can move the ashes later.

In Korea, turning ashes into memorial stones, small glossy beads made by fusing the ashes at high temperature, is a popular choice, and many Daejeon families keep them in a glass case at home. Others prefer a traditional urn, a pendant holding a little ash, or a framed paw print. Ask a provider which of these they offer, and whether you can see examples before you decide.

Handing ashes over in person is the main reason Daejeon owners go local. You can watch a jeweler measure out a pinch, fill the chamber and seal it, and the rest of the ashes never leave your sight. Ask when you call whether they do this for walk-ins or by appointment, whether they charge for filling a piece you bought elsewhere and whether they'll use a permanent adhesive on the screw. Many jewelers have done it before; a few will politely decline, which is fine too.

Daejeon is home to about 1,500,000 people.

Families in Daejeon often end up using a provider from Daegu (76 miles), Gangnam (82 miles) and Incheon (85 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Cremation habits in South Korea

In South Korea, about 92.43%[1] of people are cremated, and that shapes how families think about pet ashes too. Relatives rarely question a pendant or a glass bead, and some will want one of their own. If a grandparent or a sibling was close to your pet, ask them early; it's easier to plan the portions before anything is sealed than to reopen an urn later.

Daejeon weather, water and your memorial piece

Without local climate figures for Daejeon, one tip covers every season: photograph your piece and its engraving the day it arrives, front and back, in good light. If it's ever damaged or lost, a clear photo helps a jeweler repair or remake it faithfully, and it helps with an insurance claim too.

What pet cremation jewelry costs for Daejeon families

In many Asian cities, pet funeral providers sell keepsake pendants as part of a package, and prices vary widely. As a reference, a sterling silver ash necklace at one US retailer costs $88–$298[3], and a UK glass ash pendant costs £170[5]. If you're in Daejeon and considering a diamond, one Swiss lab lists pet stones at $1,400–$40,500[6].

Local rules worth knowing before you order

One practical point matters before any jewelry decision: the cremation has to be individual if you want ashes back, since communal cremations don't return them. After that, South Korea leaves the ashes largely to you. What follows summarizes local scattering and burial points, useful because most of the ashes will still need a home once a pendant is filled.

A simple order checklist

  1. Take fur now, from somewhere hidden. Snip a little from the chest or beneath the collar and store it in a named envelope; that clipping keeps resin pieces, and some diamonds, possible later.
  2. Make a print on a calm day. An engraver needs a crisp image; a pet-safe stamp pad, or a pressing in salt dough, provides one, and failing that, photograph the paw pad against something light-colored.
  3. Tell your vet what you'd like. Ask them to note individual cremation with ashes returned and a teaspoon bagged separately, so nobody has to ask you on the hardest day.
  4. Browse without buying. Bookmark a few designs that appeal, note the chamber capacity and the metal, and leave anything that would be sealed or dated until later.
  5. Talk to the family quietly. Ask around about who might like a piece, so that when you request a portion it covers everyone.
  6. Keep it all in one folder. With the fur, the prints, the maker's contact and the vet's notes in one place, placing the order later is a job of minutes.

Beyond the pendant: keeping your pet close

Paw prints, a lock of fur and a photograph are simple keepsakes many Daejeon families ask for before cremation. Some families also mark the pet's anniversary or holidays such as Chuseok by visiting the columbarium or setting out food and a photo at home. Whatever memorial you choose, tell the provider about keepsakes before the cremation begins, since prints and fur cannot be taken afterwards.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in South Korea?

For people, yes: about 92.43%[1] of South Korea deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Daejeon follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Daejeon?

Usually yes. Daegu is about 76 miles away, Gangnam is about 82 miles away and Incheon is about 85 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

My pet was cremated years ago. Can I still have jewelry made?

Yes. Cremated remains are stable mineral and don't change over time, so ashes from years ago work just as well. Open the urn over a sheet of paper, take a teaspoon with a clean spoon and seal the urn again. If the ashes are in a sealed container you'd rather not open, a Daejeon jeweler or the original crematory may help.

What if my memorial pendant breaks or I lose it?

If it breaks, stop wearing it and put it in a small sealed bag straight away so no ash is lost. A jeweler can often replace a bail or clasp without opening the chamber. For peace of mind, keep a little spare ash in the urn so a replacement can be filled, and ask whether your home insurance covers jewelry.

How much of my pet's ashes does a diamond need?

Far more than a pendant. One US lab asks for about 100 g of ashes, roughly half a cup[8], and a Swiss lab needs at least 150 g of ashes or 5 g of fur[9]. Cremated remains contain very little carbon, which is why labs need so much. Ask whether unused ash is returned before you send anything.

Can I use my pet's fur instead of ashes?

Yes. Fur can't go into molten glass, but it sets well in resin, where you can still see its color. Some memorial-diamond labs can also work from fur; one Swiss lab needs about 5 g[9]. Fur has to be clipped before cremation, so if your pet is still with you, it's worth taking a little from a hidden spot now.
