Jewelers, glass artists and online makers near Bilbao
In Spain, cremation of people now accounts for around half of funerals, and many Bilbao families are comfortable keeping ashes at home. For a pet, that might mean an urn in the living room, a small engraved stone on a balcony, or a memorial tree planted at a family caserío. For outdoor pieces, pick materials that handle Bilbao's rain, such as stone or sealed ceramic.
The landscape around Bilbao offers quiet places for remembrance: the paths up Artxanda or Pagasarri, the Atlantic coast at Getxo and Sopelana, or the woods of the Gorbeia natural park. Some people scatter a little of the ashes at a favourite place and keep the rest at home. Check local rules for protected areas and beaches, and consider a biodegradable urn if you'd like the ashes to return to the earth.
Many Bilbao owners start with the crematory that handled their pet. Some sell pendants and charms at the counter, and most will portion out a small amount of ashes for jewelry when asked, which saves you opening the main container later. If the range is small, you can still buy elsewhere and bring the portion to a local jeweler to fill.
About 346,000 people live in Bilbao, which makes it the largest of the 2 Basque Country communities we cover.
Families in Bilbao often end up using a provider from Santander (46 miles), San Sebastian (48 miles) and Pamplona (72 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

a pinch (at most about a teaspoon)[4]
An ashes pendant holds only a pinch of cremated remains (the retailer says at most about a teaspoon; most pendants hold far less), and most come with a small funnel fill kit.

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
In Spain, about 50.11%[1] of people are cremated, so it's normal here to keep ashes at home, scatter them or share them out. A pendant is simply one of those shares. If you're not sure how much to set aside, remember that most pieces take a pinch or a teaspoon at most, so the decision about the rest of the ashes can wait.
That Spain rate is a human one, published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). We quote it for Bilbao only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Timing fittings and ceremonies around Bilbao's weather
If you're mailing ashes from Bilbao to a maker, weather mostly affects how long the parcel takes. Send early in the week, use tracking and a signature, and ask the maker to confirm arrival. The ashes themselves aren't harmed by heat or cold; only resin pieces coming back need to avoid long hot waits.

What you'll likely pay, from steel to diamond
The price of the cremation shapes the jewelry budget. Shared (communal) cremation sends no ashes home and costs far less; in the UK, the competition regulator found it two to five times cheaper than individual cremation[5]. For a pendant in Bilbao, budget for individual cremation first, then the piece: a UK silver ring at £165–£300[6] shows what handmade costs (one UK maker's price).

Before you divide the ashes: Basque Country basics
If you rent or share a building in Basque Country, a pendant raises no issues at all, but burying the rest of the ashes in a shared garden might. Landlords, homeowners' associations and park authorities can set conditions of their own. The notes below give Basque Country's general position; check with whoever controls the land before scattering or burying what's left.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Ask the child what feels right to them. Some want something to wear; others would rather keep a special object on a shelf or in a drawer.
- Choose sturdy and simple. Small hands get on better with a keyring, a sealed glass bead or a chunky charm in steel than with a delicate chain.
- Let them make the choices they can. Shape, color and the words on it are theirs to pick; an adult does the filling and sealing.
- Avoid anything small enough to swallow for young children, and take off long cords at bedtime.
- Keep a little ash aside for later. In a few years a teenager might ask for something more adult.
- Mark the first wearing together. Taking a brief, quiet moment as they put it on helps a child grasp what it stands for.
Other ways to remember your pet in Bilbao
Space in a Bilbao flat is limited, so many families choose a small urn, a keepsake pendant or a paw print impression rather than something large. A compact urn on a shelf with a photograph can sit comfortably in a busy family home. If you'd like to share ashes with relatives elsewhere in Bizkaia or beyond, ask for small keepsake containers alongside the main urn.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Bilbao?
The closest communities we cover are Santander (about 46 miles), San Sebastian (about 48 miles) and Pamplona (about 72 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Bilbao too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Bilbao page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I send my pet's ashes by post from Bilbao?
Often yes within the country, but rules differ by postal service and many restrict sending ashes abroad. Check the current rules with the national post or a courier before you pack anything, and ask the maker how they want it sent. If sending feels risky, a self-fill pendant filled at home or by a local jeweler avoids mailing ashes at all.
What if my pet had a communal cremation and no ashes came back?
You can still have a meaningful piece. Fur you kept, a paw or nose print taken by the vet, or even a clear photo can be engraved on silver or set in resin. Ask the clinic whether they took a print before your pet left; many do as standard. If you'd like prints of another pet in future, the paw print kit chooser compares the options.
My pet was cremated years ago. Can I still have jewelry made?
Yes. Cremated remains are stable mineral and don't change over time, so ashes from years ago work just as well. Open the urn over a sheet of paper, take a teaspoon with a clean spoon and seal the urn again. If the ashes are in a sealed container you'd rather not open, a Bilbao jeweler or the original crematory may help.
Can a jeweler engrave a pendant that's already filled?
Often, as long as the engraving goes on a solid surface away from the sealed thread. Laser engraving produces little heat and doesn't touch the chamber. Hand and rotary engraving put pressure on the piece, so tell the engraver it holds ashes and ask them to check the seal afterwards. Where you can, engrave first and fill second.
