How Liverpool owners get a memorial piece made
Liverpool has a strong tradition of remembering, visible in its two cathedrals and its many memorials, and families here often bring that to a pet's death. A small urn on the mantelpiece, a framed paw print, a garden stone or a pendant with a little ash are all common choices. In smaller terraced homes, something indoors and portable is often the most practical.
Wind, rain and salt air off the Mersey can weather outdoor memorials quickly in Liverpool, particularly in exposed spots near the waterfront or out towards Crosby. Slate, granite and glazed ceramic outlast painted wood by many years. A shrub or small tree planted with a bio urn does well in the mild, wet climate, while a potted plant on a back-yard wall or a balcony works where there is no garden at all.
Many Liverpool veterinary practices work with more than one crematory, and those businesses differ in what they include: some return ashes with a free fur clipping and ink print, others charge for each. Ask the practice which keepsakes come as standard. A free ink print can become an engraved charm later, with no charge for the artwork.
With roughly 500,000 residents, Liverpool is the 6th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Manchester (31 miles), Sheffield (63 miles) and Leeds (65 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Liverpool routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
150,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Liverpool
How we calculated this
500,000 ÷ 2.4 = 208,333 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 150,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
12,000
Liverpool families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
150,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 12,000 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
41%[1]

How England feels about cremation, and what that means for jewelry
Cremation covers about 83.0%[5] of human deaths in England, and pet owners lean the same way: in a published survey of 2,043 US dog and cat owners, 68%[6] had chosen cremation for at least one past pet. So ashes come home to many households, and a pendant is one small, portable use for a portion of them.
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) is where the England figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Liverpool tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, humidity and cold: caring for your piece in Liverpool
If you're mailing ashes from Liverpool to a maker, weather mostly affects how long the parcel takes. Send early in the week, use tracking and a signature, and ask the maker to confirm arrival. The ashes themselves aren't harmed by heat or cold; only resin pieces coming back need to avoid long hot waits.

Memorial jewelry prices Liverpool buyers can check
Most families in Liverpool will find a handmade UK piece costs somewhere between £100 and £400, based on published prices such as £170[7] for a glass ash pendant and £180–£299[8] for a silver ash pendant (one UK maker's price). Postage for ashes is usually the family's cost, so ask the maker which Royal Mail service they want you to use before you send anything.

Before you divide the ashes: England basics
Wearing ashes is a private choice, and England asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. Below is the England side; a postal carrier's own conditions sit alongside it.
In the UK, handmade pet-ash jewelry is well established, with glass studios and silversmiths publishing clear prices. Royal Mail accepts ashes within the UK when properly packed, but sending them abroad by post is restricted, so a UK maker is usually the simpler choice. Ask your vet or pet crematorium to set a teaspoon aside before the ashes are returned; it saves opening the casket later.
For England's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the England guide. Local rules in Liverpool can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple order checklist
- Look at the ashes you have. Most come back gritty and uneven, so for a tiny chamber it helps to pass them through a small sieve or flatten the larger grains gently using a spoon's back.
- Buy or commission the piece. A self-fill pendant comes within days; glass, resin and ring work run to weeks; a diamond is a matter of months.
- Fill at a calm moment. A clear table, a sheet of paper, the funnel from the kit and no fan or open window.
- Seal the screw. Apply the adhesive that came with it, clean off any that squeezes out, and let it set before wearing.
- Tell the people who'll wear the others. Relatives living elsewhere can have theirs posted with tracking, along with a few lines on how to look after it.
- Keep the rest of the ashes safe. The urn, a scattering or a burial can all come later.
Beyond the pendant: keeping your pet close
The coast north of Liverpool, from Crosby Beach with its iron figures to the pinewoods and dunes at Formby, is a favourite place for many local families, and some want to scatter part of a pet's ashes there. Do it quietly, away from other beach users, and check any rules for protected areas. Keeping a small amount in a keepsake means you always have something close.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Liverpool?
Usually yes. Manchester is about 31 miles away, Sheffield is about 63 miles away and Leeds is about 65 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Liverpool each year?
Our estimate is around 12,000. It comes from Liverpool's population (about 500,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 150,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is cremation common in England?
For people, yes: about 83.0%[5] of England deaths end in cremation, according to Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Liverpool follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[10], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[11] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
Can one pendant hold ashes from two pets?
Yes. Many chambers take a pinch from each, and some makers offer double-chambered pieces or two glass beads on one chain. Only mix the portions if you're sure, because once sealed they can't be separated. The capacity guide helps you check a chamber is big enough for both, and keeping a little of each pet apart in the urn leaves options open.
What if my pet had a communal cremation and no ashes came back?
You can still have a meaningful piece. Fur you kept, a paw or nose print taken by the vet, or even a clear photo can be engraved on silver or set in resin. Ask the clinic whether they took a print before your pet left; many do as standard. If you'd like prints of another pet in future, the paw print kit chooser compares the options.
