Keeping your pet close in Springfield: pendants, rings and glass
Springfield has an estimated 57,000 dog- or cat-owning households. When one of those pets dies, a pendant, ring or glass bead lets the whole family carry a pinch of ashes. This is the plain guide to doing it well.

Finding pet cremation jewelry in Springfield
Forest Park, one of the largest city parks in New England, and the banks of the Connecticut River are places many Springfield families link with good times outdoors. If you'd like to remember your pet somewhere like that, a quiet visit with flowers can be enough, since rules on scattering in public parks vary. Setting a little aside for a keepsake means you'll still have something close through the winter.
Many Springfield families keep a pet's memorial indoors, especially through the long winters: an urn on a mantel, a framed paw print, or a pendant holding a pinch of ashes. If you'd like to bury part of the ashes in the garden later, ask for them to be divided before they're returned, so you can wait for the ground to thaw in spring.
In Springfield, it's often possible to get the whole thing done in a single afternoon: pick up the ashes, buy a sterling or steel pendant from a local jeweler, have them fill and seal it at the counter and walk out wearing it. Custom pieces take longer, but for many people that same-day option is exactly what they need in the first week.
About 154,702 people live in Springfield, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 61 Massachusetts communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Springfield are based about 42 miles away in Worcester, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are West Springfield Town (3 miles), Agawam Town (4 miles) and Chicopee (5 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Springfield too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
57,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Springfield has (estimate)
How we calculated this
154,702 ÷ 2.5 = 61,881 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 57,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
4,750
Springfield families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
57,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,750 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

Local attitudes to keeping ashes close
About 55.9%[5] of people in Massachusetts are cremated, up steadily over the years, so ashes are familiar to most families but still new to some. That mix shows up in jewelry too. Younger relatives may be keen on a pendant; older ones may prefer something without ashes, such as a paw print charm or a fur inclusion. Both are good memorials, and one family can easily have both.
For the Massachusetts figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Springfield rather than as pet data.
Wearing ash jewelry through Springfield's seasons
Thick gloves and cold fingers in January make tiny clasps fiddly. If you'll wear a pendant daily through Springfield's winter, ask for a lobster clasp big enough to open with numb hands, or a slide-on pendant that never needs taking off its chain. It sounds minor until a filled piece drops into snow.
Road salt and slush in Springfield splash onto boots, cuffs and gloves, and silver near a wrist picks it up. Memorial bracelets and cuffs deserve a wipe with a damp cloth after a slushy day in January, February, March and December, followed by a dry one. Pendants worn under a coat escape most of it.

How much to budget for a memorial piece
Prints and fur are the inexpensive part if you plan early. By our estimate, paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32[6], ranging from $10 to $76, and a fur clipping can cost as little as $5[7]. Have them done before cremation in Springfield, even if the jewelry order comes months later, because they can't be made afterwards.

Local rules worth knowing before you order
Filling a memorial pendant isn't a regulated job in most places, Massachusetts included, so ask a jeweler or crematory how they store and label a portion rather than assuming a rule covers it. A sealed bag with your pet's name on it, kept apart from other work, is a fair expectation. The public rules that do exist concern burial and scattering, summarized below.
To find your county or city office in Massachusetts, start with the official Massachusetts local government directory.
Start with the Massachusetts rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Springfield's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Your order, one step at a time
- List everyone who might want something, and don't forget those who were close to your pet but haven't said anything.
- Ask each person three things: whether they'd prefer a necklace, a ring or a keyring; what metal sits well on their skin; and if they want ashes inside, fur, or just a print.
- Work out how far the ashes go. Once you know the number of pieces, the sharing planner works out how to divide them.
- Order the set from one maker to keep the finish, the chains and the engraving consistent, and check if there's a different price for a set.
- Fill every piece in one sitting, so the urn is opened a single time and sealed up properly when you're done.
- Post far-away pieces with tracking, each in its own little box alongside a care card and a few written words.
Remembering your pet, in Springfield and beyond
Freeze-thaw cycles in western Massachusetts are hard on outdoor memorials, and softer stone can crack after a few winters. Granite, which New England has long used for its markers, and bronze hold up well. If you'd like a memorial tree, a native maple or flowering shrub planted in spring or early autumn has time to settle before the ground freezes.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Springfield?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Where are the providers that serve Springfield actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Worcester, about 42 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Springfield and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Massachusetts?
For people, yes: about 55.9%[5] of Massachusetts deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Springfield follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Springfield?
Usually yes. West Springfield Town is about 3 miles away, Agawam Town is about 4 miles away and Chicopee is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much ash goes into a pendant?
Very little. A typical ashes pendant holds only a pinch, about a teaspoon at most[9], and ash-in-glass pieces use only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[10] of ashes (per one urn retailer's guide). That means even a small cat leaves enough for several pieces with plenty left for an urn. Our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how many pieces one pet can fill.
What if my pet had a communal cremation and no ashes came back?
You can still have a meaningful piece. Fur you kept, a paw or nose print taken by the vet, or even a clear photo can be engraved on silver or set in resin. Ask the clinic whether they took a print before your pet left; many do as standard. If you'd like prints of another pet in future, the paw print kit chooser compares the options.
