People in Spring mark a pet's death in all kinds of ways, from a private evening at home to a gathering in the backyard with neighbors. The urn, the plaque and the framed photo can be decided whenever you're ready, even months from now. Nose prints, paw imprints and saved tufts of fur work differently: ask for those while your pet is still with the provider, before cremation.
Tall loblolly pines and heavy shade give many Spring backyards a woodland feel, and memorials here often suit that setting: a moss-edged stone beneath the trees, a cedar keepsake box, a small bronze plaque on a fence post. Plenty of owners also choose indoor urns or wearable pieces. Dividing ashes lets relatives in Katy, The Woodlands or out of state each keep something.
If you live outside Spring on a farm or a rural road, mail and parcel pickup can be less predictable, so plan around it. Have the maker ship pieces to a post office box or a workplace if deliveries tend to go astray, and choose tracked, signature services both ways. A memorial piece left on a porch in the rain is a worry nobody needs.

Cremation in Texas and wearing a little of your pet
In Texas, about 55.7%[5] of people are cremated, so it's normal here to keep ashes at home, scatter them or share them out. A pendant is simply one of those shares. If you're not sure how much to set aside, remember that most pieces take a pinch or a teaspoon at most, so the decision about the rest of the ashes can wait.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Spring tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Spring weather, water and your memorial piece
Heat is one reason some Spring families fill jewelry straight away but hold an outdoor scattering or tree planting for a cooler month. If older relatives will be there, an early morning outside May, June, July, August and September is kinder. Wearing the new pendant at that gathering ties the two memorials together.
Swimming season in Spring is long, and the one habit worth building is taking a filled pendant off before the pool or the beach. Chlorine is hard on sterling silver and plated finishes, salt water gets into threads, and sunscreen builds up in engraving. Fused glass and memorial diamonds are fine in water, but the chain and the clasp may not be. Rinse in fresh water and dry fully when you get home.

Memorial diamonds have the widest price range of anything on this page. Some labs advertise stones for as little as $750–$995[6], while a larger lab charges $3,499[7] for 0.25 carat and $15,000 for a full carat[8], roughly $14,000 to $15,000 per carat at any size[9]. For most Spring families, a silver or glass piece does the same emotional job for a fraction of that.

Before you divide the ashes: Texas basics
Wearing ashes is a private choice, and Texas asks for no permit or form to keep a portion in a pendant or ring. The questions that do carry rules come afterwards: where the remaining ashes may be scattered or buried, and how a portion may travel if your maker is elsewhere. A simple order checklist
- Ask the child what feels right to them. One child will want a piece to wear, while another prefers a special object kept in a drawer or on a shelf.
- Choose sturdy and simple. A sealed glass bead, a chunky steel charm or a keyring suits small hands better than a fine chain.
- Let them make the choices they can. The shape, the color and any wording belong to the child; the filling and the sealing belong to an adult.
- Avoid anything small enough to swallow for young children, and take off long cords at bedtime.
- Keep a little ash aside for later. In a few years a teenager might ask for something more adult.
- Mark the first wearing together. A short, quiet moment helps a child understand what the piece means.
Small rituals that go with a memorial piece
Spring's damp climate is hard on some memorial materials. Soft stone and unsealed wood attract mildew and moss, and low-lying yards near the creeks can flood. Granite, bronze and sealed hardwood hold up better. Planting a dogwood or a native holly over a biodegradable urn works best in winter, in a spot that drains rather than one that puddles after every summer thunderstorm.

Is Spring big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 23,000 Spring households keep a dog or cat and around 1,900 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 62,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is cremation common in Texas?

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Spring?
Usually yes. Oak Ridge North is about 5 miles away, The Woodlands is about 6 miles away and Shenandoah is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Spring?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 95°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is gold-plated cremation jewelry worth it?
For occasional wear, often yes. Gold-plated ash pendants cost about $88 to $170 at one US retailer, against $1,298–$4,750[11] for solid 14k gold there. Plating wears through at the edges with daily use, especially with sweat, so for everyday wear, solid gold, sterling or titanium lasts longer. Ask the maker how thick the plating is before you buy.
Can I get my pet's paw or nose print engraved on jewelry?
Yes. A laser engraver can put your pet's actual print on a pendant, ring or tag, working from an ink print, a clay impression or a sharp photo. A custom sterling silver print charm costs $143 + chain[12] at one US maker. Always ask for a proof first, because smudged prints can engrave as blotches.
